Book Zinc and Its Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book Zinc and Its Alloys Classic Reprint written by T. E. Lones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zinc and Its Alloys During the past five years, the zinc industry has undergone a development which, before the War, would have been thought possible only in romance. Much of this development has been due to the demands of the war, and the circumstances connected therewith have been duly noticed and commented on by the leading newspapers and technical journals. These circumstances show how, during a long period of peace, control of an important industry may be lost to a dangerous extent. Before the month of August, 1914, less than one-third of the zinc used in this country was produced at home, the rest having been imported chiefly from Germany and Belgium. Further, most of the important yield of zinc concentrates obtained in the Australian Broken Hill district was at the disposal of German merchants and found its way to German and other continental smelters. A small part only was sent to England and smelted there. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tensile Strengths of the Copper-Zinc Alloys: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Table I gives a complete summary of the final results. The first column shows the copper composition of each alloy obtained by analysis. In the second column are recorded the temperatures as taken just before pouring. The third column shows the freezing temperatures for the corresponding com positions, taken directly from the freezing curve (fig. In the fourth column are tabulated the differences between the pouring temperatures and the corresponding freezing tem peratures. The next column shows the ultimate tensile strengths in pounds per square inch, while in the following column are given the ultimate strengths based upon the reduced areas of the broken ends. Following this, we have the ductilities, based on five-inch lengths on the test-pieces, and in the last column the good pieces are designated by G and the faulty ones by B. Table II gives a list of the good pieces of the regular series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Art of Galvanizing Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of Galvanizing Classic Reprint written by Alfred Sang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Galvanizing But why is it that zinc-dust acts in this peculiar manner, depositing zinc at a temperature several hundred degrees be low its melting point, and why is it that the comparatively cold zinc alloys itself to the iron or other metal when the mol ten zinc of the hot process fails to do so, or at best only does so in a cumbrous limited way? I can only answer these questions by giving you my own theory of the nature of zinc dust and of its action under the conditions of Sherard izing. This theory is quite new to the very best of my knowledge and was not published by me until quite recently;* it is founded on observed facts but is not entirely empirical, because so far it has seemed to satisfy all the theoretical tests to which I have been able to put it and, it answers a number of unexplained phen omena which I shall mention later. Book The Analysis of Non Ferrous Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis of Non Ferrous Alloys Classic Reprint written by Fred Ibbotson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys The first edition of this book was published just as the Great War commenced. The war did a great deal to encourage the accurate control of metals by means of chemical analysis, and the non -ferrous metals and alloys experienced this stimulus to a marked extent. In addition, the war brought to the front many and various alloys which previously had been either unknown or very little used. A notable example of this effect was the greatly extended of the light alloys of aluminium. Despite this dual develop ment in the field occupied by the non-ferrous alloys, it cannot be said that there was any concomitant development in the methods employed in their analysis. Some methods were brought forward, but the advance was not startling. The main duty, therefore, of the authors in presenting a new edition is to provide the best analytical methods for those new alloys that have been brought into prominence. They have therefore added to the book methods for the analysis of aluminium and its light alloys, and since the separation of aluminium and zinc presents the most difficult problem in the analysis of such alloys, they have dealt with this separation at some length in a separate chapter. Other alloys which now call for adequate treatment are mainly those of nickel. The principal alloys of this metal are those with copper and those with chromium and iron. Methods for the analysis of all these alloys have been included in this new edition. The other notable additions deal with the determination of the special elements, such as iron or manganese, that are added to the copper-zinc and copper tin alloys in order to give these alloys mechanical properties of special value. Book The Properties of Some Copper Alloys Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Properties of Some Copper Alloys Classic Reprint written by W. Rosenhain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties of Some Copper Alloys The introduction of lead into some of these alloys was tried with a specific object, but they were found to be very laminated. The lead appears to occur in the free state in the metal in the form of long strings of small globules. This structure is illustrated in fig. 4 (plate 1) under a magnification Of 150 diameters. This figure represents an alloy containing 5 per cent. Manganese and 1 per Cent. Of lead. The specimen has been photographed without etching. A comparison of Table II. With Table I. Shows that the alloys have in no case such remarkable properties as those which have been referred to in connection with Table I., but attention may be drawn to the alloy (no. 15) containing 3 per cent. Manganese and 10 per cent. Zinc, which, in the cold rolled condition, has a tensile strength of 47 tons per square inch, With 3 per cent. Elongation, and in the annealed condition a tensile strength of 23 tons per square inch, with 35 per cent. Elongation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron (and Steel), Copper, Lead and Zinc Since 1913, the date of the last edition, such radical changes and improvements have been made in the-metallurgy of the common metals, that this edition of 1921 has been largely rewritten to bring it in accord with present practice, as will be seen by examination of the following pages. Great pains have been taken to clearly set forth underlying principles and at the same time to give the details of methods and of metallurgical equip ment, and their cost. It is realized that, due to the rapid advance in prices, the costs of operation have lately been subject to serious modification. A chapter has been devoted to questions of the economic situation of the business of metallurgy. Little attempt has been made to describe methods not now in use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Waterbury Book of Alloys: Supplement The metal itself is extremely sensitive to chemical as well as mechanical conditions and unless care is exercised in every possible direction disappointment. In the final results is inevitable. In many instances, even when the greatest care is taken with the melting and pouring Operations, the result ing castings will be, found to be defective. These results in general may be charged to changes in atmospheric condi tions, as well as to some unintentional oversight in the melting or pouring operations. Only the best grade of metals should be used for the manufacture of nickel and its alloys which are to be used for rolling mill purposes. The copper used may be either lake or electrolytic but, in no instance should that grade of copper known as casting copper be employed. A tough, long-grained grade of spelter practically free from lead or other impurities will be found to give satisfactory results. Book The Metallurgy of the Common Metals

Download or read book The Metallurgy of the Common Metals written by Leonard Strong Austin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Metallurgy of the Common Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper, Lead, and Zinc This outline of the metallurgy of the common metals, namely, gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, and zinc, is devoted to the description of processes for winning these metals from their ores and then refining them. The metallurgy of iron is treated only to the point where pig-iron is obtained. Following the description of ores, as well as of the fuels used in smelting them, and the materials of which the furnaces are con structed, we come to sampling, for the determination of the exact value of the ore before treatment. A chapter has been devoted to the subject of thermo-chemistry as applied to igneous methods of extraction. The winning or reduction of the various metals is then taken up in order, and is followed by a description of the methods of refining them. Attention is then given to commercial considerations, since the processes must be conducted in a profitable way.
