Download or read book The Struggle Over State Power in Zimbabwe written by George Hamandishe Karekwaivanane and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The establishment of legal institutions was a key part of the process of state construction in Africa, and these institutions have played a crucial role in the projection of state authority across space. This is especially the case in colonial and postcolonial Zimbabwe. George Karekwaivanane offers a unique long-term study of law and politics in Zimbabwe, which examines how the law was used in the constitution and contestation of state power across the late-colonial and postcolonial periods. Through this, he offers insight on recent debates about judicial independence, adherence to human rights, and the observation of the rule of law in contemporary Zimbabwean politics. The book sheds light on the prominent place that law has assumed in Zimbabwe's recent political struggles for those researching the history of the state and power in Southern Africa. It also carries forward important debates on the role of law in state-making, and will also appeal to those interested in African legal history"--

Book Lancaster House Constitution of Zimbabwe

Download or read book Lancaster House Constitution of Zimbabwe written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitution-making is not a new phenomenon is Zimbabwean history. Over the last 31 years of its existence the sovereign nation of Zimbabwe has had one constitution and three major draft constitutions. More recently, the Law Society of Zimbabwe compiled its own model constitution. None of these constitutional drafts have been adopted formally. Zimbabwe is undergoing yet another constitution-making process that is being led by Parliament, in terms of the Interparty Political Agreement signed in September 2008 by the three major political parties represented in Parliament. This process is not being undertaken in a vacuum as these other documents already exist and are supported by different stakeholders. The three drafts that have been proposed by various stakeholders have not been formally adopted for various reasons. The Constitutional Commission draft was even the subject of a referendum, with the majority of Zimbabweans voting against its adoption as it did not subscribe to the minimum standards of constitutionalism. This publication reviews key provisions of the three major constitutional drafts (the Constitutional Commission draft, the National Commission Assembly draft and the Kariba draft) and the provisions of the current (Lancaster House) Constitution of Zimbabwe. It seeks to set out critical issues which should be addressed in any constitution under various thematic areas, and to provide guidance to a host of stakeholders--from members of the public, members of Parliament, constitutional committees, and even constitutional drafters. Since popular participation of citizens continues to remain lacking, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human rights believes that this publication can be used as guidance on key principles and provisions that must be incorporated in a constitution for it to conform to the minimum standards of constitutionalism.--P. iii

Book Becoming Zimbabwe A History from the Pre colonial Period to 2008

Download or read book Becoming Zimbabwe A History from the Pre colonial Period to 2008 written by Brian Raftopoulos and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Zimbabwe is the first comprehensive history of Zimbabwe, spanning the years from 850 to 2008. In 1997, the then Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, Morgan Tsvangirai, expressed the need for a 'more open and critical process of writing history in Zimbabwe. ...The history of a nation-in-the-making should not be reduced to a selective heroic tradition, but should be a tolerant and continuing process of questioning and re-examination.' Becoming Zimbabwe tracks the idea of national belonging and citizenship and explores the nature of state rule, the changing contours of the political economy, and the regional and international dimensions of the country's history. In their Introduction, Brian Raftopoulos and Alois Mlambo enlarge on these themes, and Gerald Mazarire's opening chapter sets the pre-colonial background. Sabelo Ndlovu tracks the history up to WW11, and Alois Mlambo reviews developments in the settler economy and the emergence of nationalism leading to UDI in 1965. The politics and economics of the UDI period, and the subsequent war of liberation, are covered by Joesph Mtisi, Munyaradzi Nyakudya and Teresa Barnes. After independence in 1980, Zimbabwe enjoyed a period of buoyancy and hope. James Muzondidya's chapter details the transition 'from buoyancy to crisis', and Brian Raftopoulos concludes the book with an analysis of the decade-long crisis and the global political agreement which followed.

Book Zimbabwe Mired in Transition

Download or read book Zimbabwe Mired in Transition written by V. Masunungure and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three years after the advent of Zimbabwes Inclusive Government in February 2009, the country still awaits the elections that people hope will lead to a more enduring political settlement. Zimbabwe: Mired in Transition reviews the experience of recent years assesses the progress that has been made. What is the public mood, and how has it changed? What steps have been taken to reform the media? How important is a new constitution. Although the economy has stabilised to some extent with the adoption of a multi-currency regime, industrial and agricultural production are depressed, and investment inflows are limited; what spaces exist for fiscal reform? Are local authority structures and the state bureaucracy equipped to handle the tasks that will ne asked of them? In terms of two important areas, the book extends its analysis further back than 2009. First, is the issue of emigration. Estimates of the number of Zimbabweans in the diaspora range from three to four million; what impact us this having on national development, and to what extent might the trend of migration be reversed? The second concerns young people, the chapter on which concludes: We already have a lost generation - those who were once called the born frees. Unless positive changes are made, we will still have another. This collection of eleven essays examines in detail some of the pressing questions which Zimbabweans must ask as they chart a way forward.
