Book excerpt: Since 1964, the Belgian painter Raoul De Keyser has been building a highly personal body of work that is exceptionally difficult to categorize. With great individuality, he has successfully reconciled a number of apparent contradictions: figuration versus abstraction, the physicality of paint versus the ephemerality of the image, and exploration of the fundamentals of painting versus references to his personal life and surroundings. Since 1980 De Keyser sets off resolutely down his own path and also marked the beginning of his steadily growing success.

Book The Death of Francis Bacon

Download or read book The Death of Francis Bacon written by Max Porter and published by Strange Light. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madrid. Unfinished. Man dying. A great painter lies on his deathbed, synapses firing, writhing and reveling in pleasure and pain as a lifetime of chaotic and grotesque sense memories wash over and envelop him. In this bold and brilliant short work of experimental fiction by the author of Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and Lanny, Max Porter inhabits Francis Bacon in his final moments, translating into seven extraordinary written pictures the explosive final workings of the artist's mind. Writing as painting rather than about painting, Porter lets the images he conjures speak for themselves as they take their revenge on the subject who wielded them in life. The result is more than a biography: The Death of Francis Bacon is a physical, emotional, historical, sexual, and political bombardment--the measure of a man creative and compromised, erotic and masochistic, inexplicable and inspired.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SEE like an artist, and draw like a pro! If you think you can't draw, it's all in your head. Every time you pick up a pencil, a battle rages between the two sides of your brain: Your analytical brain, which wants to generalize and take shortcuts; and your visual brain, which sees it like it is. This innovative guide helps the "good guy" always win! Following the success of his first book, Painting with Your Artist's Brain (North Light Books), Carl Purcell shows that the secret to creating true-to-life renderings—and overcoming the most common drawing problems—is silencing your bossy logical nature and letting your artistic side do what it does best. Thirteen interactive exercises and 10 step-by-step demonstrations lead you on an in-depth exploration of essential drawing skills: seeing values correctly searching for relationships of angle, size and position defining form with line and edge exploring the relationship between objects and space tying everything together with value patterns making the most of your sketchbook You'll take the same observation-based approach whether you're drawing a pear, a portrait or a landscape. No subject will be beyond your reach, and you'll be amazed at your sudden mastery of drawing!

Book Jacob Campo Weyerman and his Collection of Artists Biographies

Download or read book Jacob Campo Weyerman and his Collection of Artists Biographies written by Lyckle de Vries and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weyerman’s collection of artists’ biographies (1729) is exceptional for three reasons. Firstly, he includes a great number of painters not mentioned elsewhere. Secondly, he does not limit his selection to good artists only; he also discusses failed painters and their abortive careers. Thirdly, he writes as an art critic who does not hesitate to pass judgments, sometimes severe, on his chosen subjects. In the process, Weyerman provides much information on the social and economic circumstances of art production. He found that a bohemian lifestyle was pernicious to a painter’s career, and argued that artists should live and think as merchants. In addition to analyzing Weyerman’s art critical terminology and his ideas on art theory, De Vries includes translations of two full chapters along with the original Dutch.
