Book excerpt: In 2000 a major archaeological rescue project took place at Zeugma in order to learn as much as possible about this ancient city before it was flooded by the Birecik Dam. Many of the discoveries, particularly the outstanding mosaics, have stunned the archaeological world and caught the imagination of the general public. This volume publishes the interim reports from this season of excavation, presenting us with a glimpse of some of the discoveries, including Hellenistic and Roman upper-class houses, shops, bathhouses and military structures. Particular attention is paid here to the life-size bronze statue of Mars (complete with silver and gold eyes), inscriptions of Antiochus I of Commagene, the Roman military presence and, of course, the marvellous wall-paintings and mosaics which are presented in colour photographs. Five reports are presented here, one of which is in French. This study provides us with a tantalising glimpse of what is to come.

  • ISBN : 0813185106
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book The Verbal Icon written by W.K. Wimsatt and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen essays in this volume form a series of related focuses upon various levels and areas of literary criticism. W.K. Wimsatt's assumption is that practice and theory of both the past and the present are integrally related-that there is a continuity in the materials of criticism-that a person who studies poetry today has a critical concern, not merely a historical interest, in what Aristotle or Plato said about poetry. He regards the great perennial problems of criticism as arising not by the whim of a tolerantly pluralist choice, but from the nature of language and reality. With profound learning and insight, Wimsatt treats almost the whole range of literary criticism. The first group of essays deals with fallacies he believes are involved in prevalent approaches to the literary object. The next two groups face the responsibilities of the critic who defends literature as a form of knowledge; they treat various problems of structure and style. The last group undertakes to examine the relation of literature to other arts, the relation of evaluative criticism to historical studies, and the relation of literature not only to morals, but more broadly to the whole complex of the Christian religious tradition.

Book The Cambridge History of the English Language

Download or read book The Cambridge History of the English Language written by Richard M. Hogg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Cambridge History of the English Language covers the period 1476-1776, beginning at the time of the establishment of Caxton's first press in England and concluding with the American Declaration of Independence, the notional birth of the first (non-insular) extraterritorial English. It encompasses three centuries which saw immense cultural change over the whole of Europe: the late middle ages, the renaissance, the reformation, the enlightenment, and the beginnings of romanticism. During this time, Middle English became Early Modern English and then developed into the early stages of indisputably 'modern', if somewhat old-fashioned, English. In this book, the distinguished team of six contributors traces these developments, covering orthography and punctuation, phonology and morphology, syntax, lexis and semantics, regional and social variation, and the literary language. The volume also contains a glossary of linguistic terms and an extensive bibliography.

Book Variety

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Fitzgerald
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-03-08
  • ISBN : 022629952X
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Variety written by William Fitzgerald and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of variety may seem too diffuse, obvious, or nebulous to be worth scrutinizing, but modern usage masks the rich history of the term. This book examines the meaning, value, and practice of variety from the vantage point of Latin literature and its reception and reveals the enduring importance of the concept up to the present day. William Fitzgerald looks at the definition and use of the Latin term varietas and how it has played out in different works and with different authors. He shows that, starting with the Romans, variety has played a key role in our thinking about nature, rhetoric, creativity, pleasure, aesthetics, and empire. From the lyric to elegy and satire, the concept of variety has helped to characterize and distinguish different genres. Arguing that the ancient Roman ideas and controversies about the value of variety have had a significant afterlife up to our own time, Fitzgerald reveals how modern understandings of diversity and choice derive from what is ultimately an ancient concept.
