Book excerpt: Intelligent systems, or artificial intelligence technologies, are playing an increasing role in areas ranging from medicine to the major manufacturing industries to financial markets. Intelligent Systems: Technology and Applications, Six Volume Set connects theory with proven practical applications to provide broad, multidisciplinary coverage in a single resource. In these volumes, international experts present case-study examples of successful practical techniques and solutions for diverse applications ranging from robotic systems to speech and signal processing, database management, and manufacturing.

Download or read book Being Alongside written by Alf Coles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you establish a classroom culture in which students routinely conjecture and think mathematically? How do you establish a way of working with teachers, using video, in which discussion supports professional development? The present book offers answers to these questions through an in depth (enactivist) study of one exceptional teacher in one innovative mathematics department in the UK. The book reveals some striking parallels between working to support students’ mathematical thinking and working to support teacher learning. A case is made for the importance of metacommunication in both contexts - communication about the communications that are occurring. For example, there is compelling evidence from a classroom that metacommunication, linked to the words ‘conjecture’ and ‘becoming a mathematician’, supports student metacognition and mathematical thinking. In working with teachers or students, offering these powerful metacommunications seems to require a heightened listening. With a heightened listening, attention is placed not just in what is said, but in what kind of a thing is said, with the teacher or facilitator being alongside the individuals in the wider group. "Read this book if you’re a teacher for insights into how one teacher establishes a classroom culture where her children are doing mathematics, ‘being mathematicians’ and reflect on what you want in your own classroom. Read this book if you’re a teacher educator to reflect on parallels between teaching and running professional development sessions, particularly using video. If you do not fit in either of these categories, read this book and use stories in your life." - Laurinda Brown, University of Bristol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book collects the contributions to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Speech Recognition and Understanding: Recent Advances, Trends and Applications", held in Cetraro, Italy, during the first two weeks of July 1990. This Institute focused on three topics that are considered of particular interest and rich of i'p.novation by researchers in the fields of speech recognition and understanding: Advances in Hidden Markov modeling, connectionist approaches to speech and language modeling, and linguistic processing including language and dialogue modeling. The purpose of any ASI is that of encouraging scientific communications between researchers of NATO countries through advanced tutorials and presentations: excellent tutorials were offered by invited speakers that present in this book 15 papers which sum marize or detail the topics covered in their lectures. The lectures were complemented by discussions, panel sections and by the presentation of related works carried on by some of the attending researchers: these presentations have been collected in 42 short contributions to the Proceedings. This volume, that the reader can find useful for an overview, although incomplete, of the state of the art in speech understanding, is divided into 6 Parts.

A single month changes his life metamorphically in a story about betrayal, revenge, and ultimately how much chaos one grudge can cause. One dealer who had everything, risked it all for just a little bit more, and let the past sneak up on him like he never thought it could.

Book Spiritual Mathematics

Download or read book Spiritual Mathematics written by John Dunne-Brady and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opened an entirely new vista for organizing and using basic numbers. It investigated standard linear numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ....), and how they adversely affected our thinking and actions. It carefully described a circular number system, in which numbers were placed on concentric circles, rather than on straight lines. This new arrangement might very differently and beneficially affect our daily thought processes and activities. The key discovery involved a series of ten mandalas (circular patterns) made from everyday numbers. The book correlated these new breakthroughs with ancient spiritual patterns and practices found in the I Ching, Yoga, Kabala, and in both Pagan and Christian mysteries. These older teachings included the chakras, tree of life, tarot cards, and sacraments. Spiritual Mathematics gave a scientific explanation for many spiritual values and sacred phenomena. It also emphasized the underlying spiritual realities encountered within modern scientific dogmas.

Book Air Cops

Download or read book Air Cops written by Billy Robbins and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-11 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a retired air traffic controller, Air Cops: A Personal History of Air Traffic Control takes a closer look at this adrenaline pumping occupation. Author Billy D. Robbins draws on his experience in this profession to describe navigation systems, past and present. Robbins started his training as a military control tower operator in the U.S. Air Force in 1950. His first job began during the Korean War at the March Air Force Base in southern California. It was there that he learned the daily activities of running a control tower, not all of them pleasant. Boredom, coupled with spurts of intense stress, created a difficult working environment-one that not everyone could handle. Robbins, however, thrived on the life of an air traffic controller and continued in the aviation profession for the next forty years. From the tense moments of dealing with airplane hijackers in Florida to the introduction of automated computer systems, Robbins's research and experience produces a sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic view of the air traffic control profession.

Death threats and nasty letters to editors followed several pieces. Whether in the NY Times or Math World, The Wall Street Journal or the La Jolla Light, Suttons thoughts always seem to provoke. Funny, Outrageous. Never even close to conventional.
