Book Sermons in Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah

Download or read book Sermons in Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2023-06-09 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age of practical atheism where men pay lip service to God and then do as they please. Our time is marked by a failure to meet our responsibility while believing that nothing will happen—that God will not judge His church as He’s judged His people throughout history. As we know, judgment begins at the house of God because the church bears the greater burden of guilt for possessing the greater privileges of God’s covenant, grace, salvation, and courage. We must take our lesson from Jerusalem of old to whom God sent prophets like Zephaniah, Haggai, and Zechariah to remind them of their covenant responsibility to provide the standard and word to the wicked nations around them. In this volume, R. J. Rushdoony brings out the two-edged sword of God’s law-word through these three minor prophets to both warn and encourage us to greater faithfulness and ministry. Like the faithful in ancient Jerusalem, we can feel small, marginalized, and peripheral to history, but Rushdoony reminds us that our security and effectiveness are determined by the God who controls history and not the evil machinations of men. In this book is the message of hope that we desperately need right now. To continue the great work of Christian Reconstruction, we must walk by faith and not focus on the smallness of our efforts or our seemingly small results. We must set our hearts and minds on the reality of God’s promises and know that all power and dominion are in His hands. What we cannot do, God does not ask us to do. What we can do, God requires us to do. We must stand in obedience to God and fulfill our responsibility to be faithful in our duty and calling as workers, parents, ministers, and churchmen. As heirs together of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7), our obedience helps our prayers to be heard and God’s judgment to be enacted. The future belongs to the dedicated minorities who commit themselves to God and His Word while not despising the day of small things. This is how we face the world of our day.

Book The Books of Haggai Zechariah and Malachi

Download or read book The Books of Haggai Zechariah and Malachi written by Rex Mason and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-12-08 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in other volumes of the Cambridge Bible Commentary, there are introductions to the books dealt with, followed by the text of the New English Bible divided into sections. Each section of the text is followed by the commentary upon it. The preaching of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah gave a new impetus to the life of the 'remnant' of the Jewish people returned from the Babylonian exile. Haggai stresses the importance of the relationship to God of the community as a whole, while Zechariah is seen as a prophet of hope, promising Yahweh's salvation to his people. Dr Mason considers Malachi, dating perhaps from a little later than the other two, a fitting conclusion to the group of prophetic books, in that it reminds its readers of the role of the prophets in preparing the people for God's coming, that they might enjoy salvation rather than suffer punitive judgement.

Book Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi

Download or read book Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi written by Julia M. O'Brien and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Abingdon Old Testament Commentaries provide compact, critical commentaries on the books of the Old Testament for the use of theological students and pastors. The commentaries are also useful for upper-level college or university students and for those responsible for teaching in congregational settings. In addition to providing basic information and insights into the Old Testament writings, these commentaries exemplify the tasks and procedures of careful interpretation, all to assist students of the Old Testament in coming to an informed and critical engagement with the biblical texts themselves. The six books found at the close of the Minor Prophets (Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi) present distinctive understandings of God, humanity, and the future. This commentary engages those understandings, considers what the books may have meant in the past, and describes how they resonate with contemporary readers. With attention to issues of gender, violence, and inclusivity, O'Brien explores the ethical challenges of the books and asks how faithful readers can both acknowledge the problems these biblical books raise and appreciate their value for contemporary theological reflection.

Book Twelve Prophets Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah and Malachi

Download or read book Twelve Prophets Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah and Malachi written by Peter C. Craigie and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Twelve Prophets, Volume 1 completes his study with a commentary on Micah, a contemporary of Isaiah, who foretold the birth of the Messiah; Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah, prophets who spoke for God in the last days of the Kingdom of Judah; and Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, whose messages were directed to those reforming the community of God's people after the Babylonian Exile. Individuals who proclaimed different messages according to the times in which they lived, these prophets nevertheless have in common the task of speaking the Word of God to the people of God. Through his insightful commentary, Peter C. Craigie shows the persistent meaning of this Word through the ages. Carrying forward brilliantly the pattern established by Barclay's New Testament series, the Daily Study Bible has been extended to cover the entire Old Testament as well. Invaluable for individual devotional study, for group discussion, and for classroom use, the Daily Study Bible provides a useful, reliable, and eminently readable way to discover what the Scriptures were saying then and what God is saying today.

Download or read book Haggai Zechariah Malachi written by Iain M. Duguid and published by EP BOOKS. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last three books of the Old Testament, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, have not always received the attention they deserve from the church. This is in some ways surprising, since the Gospel writers quote Zechariah 9-14 more often than any other biblical source in explaining Christ's sufferings and death. The application sections show how the person and work of Christ are anticipated in these prophets. One reason for the tendency to neglect these three books lies in the fact that they address a community who were living in a day of small things, with little glory and no great triumphs to show off to a watching world. In a day like ours, which puts such a premium on charismatic leaders whose ministries exude glory and success, they may be viewed as something of an embarrassment. But if, like the apostle Paul, we are content to be broken vessels without glory in ourselves so that the glory of Christ crucified may be all the more plainly displayed, then we shall find much blessing in these books. In them, we shall read of the comfort and challenge that come from the presence of the living God in our midst, even when his glory is not on public display. In them, we shall also read of the anticipation of the day when the glory of God would come to earth in the person of Christ and bring about the long-promised salvation of his people.

This section identifies comparable situations to those faced in the Bible and explores relevant application of the biblical messages. The author alerts the readers of problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved.
