Download or read book Gods in America written by Charles L. Cohen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious pluralism has characterized America almost from its seventeenth-century inception, but the past half century or so has witnessed wholesale changes in the religious landscape, including a proliferation of new spiritualities, the emergence of widespread adherence to ''Asian'' traditions, and an evangelical Christian resurgence. These recent phenomena--important in themselves as indices of cultural change--are also both causes and contributions to one of the most remarked-upon and seemingly anomalous characteristics of the modern United States: its widespread religiosity. Compared to its role in the world's other leading powers, religion in the United States is deeply woven into the fabric of civil and cultural life. At the same time, religion has, from the 1600s on, never meant a single denominational or confessional tradition, and the variety of American religious experience has only become more diverse over the past fifty years. Gods in America brings together leading scholars from a variety of disciplines to explain the historical roots of these phenomena and assess their impact on modern American society.

Download or read book New Technology for Problem Solving written by Scott Wilger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-12-19 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the standard practices that we continue to apply to this day in the field of business information technology are leftovers from the days of the Industrial Revolution. They are all about leveraging labor. Its ironic that we approach an activity as distinctly modern as the application of information technology to business systems in the same way we might have approached shoveling sand 150 years ago. We manage tasks. We manage time. We give little real thought or effort to the things that actually create value and ensure our successcreativity and innovation. The new technologies of our modern economy are those required to leverage knowledge for creativity and what Peter F. Drucker called systematic innovation. These technologies or disciplines are the discipline of trust, the discipline of clarity, and the discipline of process. As creativity and innovation become increasingly vital to value creation, effectively leveraging the brain power and inherent creativity of people becomes paramount. Effectively means productively, repeatably, and predictably. Though the focus of this book is primarily on the area of information technology, these principles apply to any knowledge-based activity where groups of highly-specialized and knowledgeable individuals must collaborate effectively to invent.

Download or read book Cyber Zen written by Gregory Price Grieve and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyber Zen ethnographically explores Buddhist practices in the online virtual world of Second Life. Does typing at a keyboard and moving avatars around the screen, however, count as real Buddhism? If authentic practices must mimic the actual world, then Second Life Buddhism does not. In fact, a critical investigation reveals that online Buddhist practices have at best only a family resemblance to canonical Asian traditions and owe much of their methods to the late twentieth-century field of cybernetics. If, however, they are judged existentially, by how they enable users to respond to the suffering generated by living in a highly mediated consumer society, then Second Life Buddhism consists of authentic spiritual practices. Cyber Zen explores how Second Life Buddhist enthusiasts form communities, identities, locations, and practices that are both products of and authentic responses to contemporary Network Consumer Society. Gregory Price Grieve illustrates that to some extent all religion has always been virtual and gives a glimpse of possible future alternative forms of religion.

Download or read book Revisions Zen for Film written by Hanna Hölling and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do works of art endure over time despite their material and conceptual alteration? How do decay, technological obsolescence and remediation affect what the artwork is and what it may become? How might the observation of change in artworks teach us something about their nature and behavior? How do changeable artworks induce a rethinking of those museological paradigms that assume fixity and stasis? The intellectual aim of this project is to come up with answers to these questions. "Revisions Zen for Film" which is accompanied by an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center on display from September 18, 2015 January 10, 2016 focuses on "Zen for Film" (also known as Fluxfilm no.1), one of the most evocative film works created by the Korean-American artist, Nam June Paik in 1962-64. Rather than being a compilation of objects presented for inspection in support of a curatorial argument, this project zooms into the microcosm of a singular artwork in order to unfold some of the inspirations, transitions, remediations, and residues that have occurred in the course of that artwork s existence. It also seeks to examine how the firsthand awareness of materiality enhances visual knowledge. "Revisions Zen for Film" strives to revise standard notions about an artwork that has undergone a rich history of display. The project reveals what often remains undisclosed an artwork that is a complex sum of its transitions rather than a product of the visual analysis and interpretation of that thing as a static entity. The project undermines any assumption that the artwork is unchanging, and hence subject to a single interpretation. "Zen for Film Revisions" aims to explore the significance of the artwork in its constant transitions, proposing a new art historical narrative. By putting "Zen for Film" on display and inviting an interdisciplinary dialogue, it asks precisely what and when the artwork might be. "
Download or read book The Zen Trader written by Peter Castle and published by Jaico Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trading is a stressful occupation, with mental and emotional traps on every side. Our instincts drive us to self-destruction: holding plummeting stocks in the hope of a sudden recovery, or obsessing over the minute-to-minute movements of our holdings. What if there were a trader who knew how to avoid these traps and could teach us to trade from a place of inner calm and peace of mind? Peter Castle has been a successful trader in financial markets for almost 30 years. He also happens to be a Zen monk. Peter’s unique perspective gives him unrivalled insight into how the wisdom of Zen can empower us to master our minds and achieve success in the markets. Many guides to using Zen avoid clear prescriptions and rely instead on cryptic quotes. In THE ZEN TRADER, Peter demystifies both trading and Zen, using decades of experience, sharing dozens of real-life examples, and explaining clearly the systems that enable mastery of both disciplines. He teaches us how to limit distraction, focus attention, detach from problematic emotions, be true to ourselves, and embrace the unlimited opportunities that exist in our professional and personal lives. Following Peter’s wisdom, you too can become a ZEN TRADER.

In a manner reminiscent of Einstein and the last hundred years of physics, complexity science has captured the public imagination. ® One can go to Amazon. com and purchase books on complexification (Casti 1994), emergence (Holland 1998), small worlds (Barabási 2003), the web of life (Capra 1996), fuzzy thinking (Kosko 1993), global c- plexity (Urry 2003) and the business of long-tails (Anderson 2006). Even television has incorporated the topics of complexity science. Crime shows ® ® such as 24 or CSI typically feature investigators using the latest advances in computational modeling to “simulate scenarios” or “data mine” all p- sible suspects—all of which is done before the crime takes place. The ® World Wide Web is another example. A simple search on Google. Com using the phrase “complexity science” gets close to a million hits! C- plexity science is ubiquitous. What most scholars do not realize, however, is the remarkable role sociologists are playing in this new science.
