Book Every Person s Guide to Shabbat

Download or read book Every Person s Guide to Shabbat written by Ronald H. Isaacs and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 1998 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sabbath is the only holiday included in the Ten Commandments, and the observance of it has given the Jewish people an opportunity to rest their minds and bodies. The Sabbath is primarily a home oriented occasion, although there are several prayer services that take place in the Synagogue both Friday evening and Saturday morning, afternoon, and evening. There are also a variety of home rituals which are intended to unify the family and add an aura of sanctity to the home. This volume is a user friendly guide to the Sabbath. Topics include: the origin of the Sabbath from biblical times through Temple times; synagogue and home observance, including detailed how-to Shabbat guidelines; a series of games and activities suitable to be played on Shabbat; the Jewish definition of work on the Sabbath; the laws and customs of the Sabbath and their rationale; Shabbat zemirot (table songs) with illustrations; the liturgy of the Sabbath service and commentary on the various specialized prayers for the Sabbath; Sabbath legends; notable quotations related to the Sabbath; the Sabbath in short story, and a glossary of terms and books for further reading.

Book Judaism and Islam One God One Music

Download or read book Judaism and Islam One God One Music written by Merav Rosenfeld-Hadad and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Judaism and Islam One God One Music, Merav Rosenfeld-Hadad offers the first substantial study of the history and nature of the Jewish Paraliturgical Song, which developed in the Arabo-Islamic civilization between the tenth and the twentieth centuries. Commonly portrayed as clashing cultures, Judaism and Islam appear here as complementary and enriching religio-cultural sources for the Paraliturgical Song’s texts and music, poets and musicians, as well as the worshippers. Relying chiefly on the Babylonian-Jewish written sources of the genre, Rosenfeld-Hadad gives a fascinating historical account of one thousand years of the rich and vibrant cultural and religious life of Middle Eastern Judaism that endured in Arabo-Islamic settings. She convincingly proves that the Jewish Paraliturgical Song, like its people, reflects a harmonious hybridization of Jewish and Arabo-Islamic aesthetics and ideas. Book The Orthodox Jewish Brit Chadasha

Download or read book The Orthodox Jewish Brit Chadasha written by Dr. Phillip Goble and published by AFI International Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Brit Chadasha in Yirmeyeh 31:31-34 was given to Orthodox Jews (the passage is found in the Hebrew Bible, is it not?), and since most Orthodox Jews are in New York City, particularly Brooklyn it seems, then it surely must also be appropriate to make available a translation of the Brit Chadasha from the best original manuscripts in language devoid of goyishe (and non-frum) style. The following is a passage from this new translation, specifically from "The Besuras haGeulah According to Mattityahu (Matthew)" chp 28:19-20, and is illustrative of what we at AFII are doing and what we believe:

Book Two Thousand Years of Jewish Life in Morocco

Download or read book Two Thousand Years of Jewish Life in Morocco written by Haïm Zafrani and published by KTAV Publishing House, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of the Jewish community of Morocco are buried in history, but they date back to ancient times, and perhaps to the biblical period. The first Jews in the country migrated there from Israel. Over the centuries, their numbers were increased by converts and then by Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal. After the Muslim conquest, Morocco's Jews, as "people of the book," had dhimmi status, which entailed many restrictions but allowed them to exercise their religion freely. In the mellahs (Jewish quarters) of Morocco's cities and towns, and in the mountainous rural areas, a distinct Jewish culture developed and thrived, unquestionably traditional and Orthodox, yet unique because of the many areas in which it assimilated elements of the local culture and lifestyle, making them its own as it did so. Most of Morocco's Jews settled in Israel after 1948, and many others went to other countries. Wherever they went, their rich cultural heritage went with them, as exemplified by the Maimuna festival, just after Passover, which is now a major occasion on the Israeli calender.
