Download or read book Zelda Rising written by George Hook and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zelda Rising tells the story of an empathetic young woman named Crystine who runs afoul of a perverse male stranger as she works to create a cozy refuge for booklovers in a Chicago space she calls Zelda Rising Books, in honor of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife. The novel Zelda Rising revolves around this world of books that mean much more than reading, for very lives end up depending on them. It offers up a range of colorful characters from Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood who are drawn into the center of Crystine's bookstore, for better or worse, and must face their own unfulfilled dreams and mortality after she is gaslighted and dies tragically. Mystery pervades Zelda Rising until violence becomes the only solution. Definitely an engrossing, succinct read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a stay-at-home programmer living with her loving boyfriend, Mia lives a simple but good life. Like most people, she dreams, but unlike most, she has vivid dreams about her neighbors’ lives. One day, she realizes that they aren’t dreams—what she’s been experiencing is real. Mia’s able to “ghost” into anyone she chooses, take control of their body, and make them do what she wants. Frustrated by the injustice and abuse she sees around her, Mia begins using her power to try to right the wrongs she sees. Her boyfriend, Amir, does his best to stop her, believing that no one person should have that much power, and that the system—or God—will bring justice to the perpetrators. Mia, on the other hand, has seen too much corruption in her life to believe in such naivety. However, the best intentions don’t always work out as planned. The power begins to affect Mia in ways she didn’t expect—and turns out to have consequences she never imagined.

Download or read book Discourse Markers written by Deborah Schiffrin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-02-26 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse markers - the particles oh, well, now, then, you know and I mean, and the connectives so, because, and, but and or - perform important functions in conversation. Dr Schiffrin's approach is firmly interdisciplinary, within linguistics and sociology, and her rigourous analysis clearly demonstrates that neither the markers, nor the discourse within which they function, can be understood from one point of view alone, but only as an integration of structural, semantic, pragmatic, and social factors. The core of the book is a comparative analysis of markers within conversational discourse collected by Dr Schiffrin during sociolinguistic fieldwork. The study concludes that markers provide contextual coordinates which aid in the production and interpretation of coherent conversation at both local and global levels of organization. It raises a wide range of theoretical and methodological issues important to discourse analysis - including the relationship between meaning and use, the role of qualitative and quantitative analyses - and the insights it offers will be of particular value to readers confronting the very substantial problems presented by the search for a model of discourse which is based on what people actually say, mean, and do with words in everyday social interaction.

Download or read book Understanding Video Game Music written by Tim Summers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Video Game Music develops a musicology of video game music by providing methods and concepts for understanding music in this medium. From the practicalities of investigating the video game as a musical source to the critical perspectives on game music - using examples including Final Fantasy VII, Monkey Island 2, SSX Tricky and Silent Hill - these explorations not only illuminate aspects of game music, but also provide conceptual ideas valuable for future analysis. Music is not a redundant echo of other textual levels of the game, but central to the experience of interacting with video games. As the author likes to describe it, this book is about music for racing a rally car, music for evading zombies, music for dancing, music for solving puzzles, music for saving the Earth from aliens, music for managing a city, music for being a hero; in short, it is about music for playing.
