Fur ihre enge Verwandtschaft mit der masore tischen 'p Da samtliche Handschriften die wir besitzen, junger sind als des Origenes textkritische Arbeiten so mussen wir zuvorderst dessen Hexapla soweit sie um zuganglich ist, befragen. Hatte doch Origenes bei du Abfassung seines Riesenwerkes das Endziel im Auge, die Diskrepanz der Septuaginta vom masoretischen Texte zu beseitigen durch Korrektur nach dem hebraischen Original in der zu seiner Zeit bei den Juden kanonisch gewordenen Gestalt und nach den daraus geflossenen Versionen (bleck Wellhausen a. A. O. Pag. Hierzu kommt noch, dafs ja bekanntlich bereits kurze Zeit nach ihrem Ent stehen der Einflufs der Hexapla besonders durch die zahl reichen unter dem Vorsitz des Eusebius und Pamphilus zu Casarea verfertigten Abschriften der filnf'ten Kolumne, die ja G. In der von Origenes zurechtgestutzten Gestalt enthielt, ein ganz hervorragender war. Klagt doch bereits Hieronymus, es existiere zu seiner Zeit keine Handschrift, die nicht hexaplarisch inficiert sei. Wer kennt nicht seine Worte: z Vis amator esse verus Septuaginta interpretum? Non legas ea quae sub asteriscis sunt, imo rade de voluminibus ut veterum te fautorem probes. Quod si feceris, omnes ecclesiarum bibliothecas damnare cogeris: vix enim unus aut alter invenitur liber, qui ista non habest? Dafs vornehmlich A. So beruhigte ich mich mit Wellhausen XXI 437 dabei, dafs E an unserer Stelle etwas dem Gen. 34 Berichteten Entsprechendes erzahlt habe, dafs aber die zweite Rela tion in Gen. 34 dies nicht sein konne. Spaterhin hat Kuenen diese zweite Relation, welche auf eine durch P beein ufste und von ihm abhangige Hand zuruckgehe, der allerspatesten Diaskeuase des Pentateuchs zugewiesen Theol. Tijdschr. XIV 257 ff. Bei der Schwierig heit des Problems mufste die Neubehandlung desselben durch Wellhausen in seinen nachtragen allseitig das leb hafteste Interesse hervorrufen. Wellhausen kommt jetzt zu dem Resultat, dafs das Capitel zwar von einer ganz spaten Hand stark uberarbeitet ist, dafs aber dieser bereits ein aus J und E zusammengearbeiteter Bericht vorlag, dafs also jener zweite Bericht doch im letzten Grunde auf E zuruckgehe. Sein Hauptargument ist, dafs ein nach grundschriftlicher Diaskeuast schwerlich gewagt hatte sich an dem bis zu seiner Zeit noch intacten Texte von J so zu vergreifen und ihn so zu verschneiden, wie uns jetzt thatsachlich die Trummer von J in Gen. 34 vorliegen. Dies Argument ist durchschlagend und vollig zwingend. Weiter meint aber Wellhausen, dafe die Forderung der Beschneidung schon bei J gestanden habe, nur dafs diese Forderung nicht an die, ganze Stadt Sichem, sondern aus schliefslich an den Bewerber um Dina gestellt worden sei. Eine genauere Untersuchung der ganzen Frage wird wohl nicht uber ussig sein und ich hoffe den Nachweis erbringen zu konnen, dafe Wellhausen mit dieser neuesten Losung in der Hauptsache das Richtige getroffen hat. Book excerpt: The complex and, at times, violent metaphorical discourse of Hosea 2 has elicited a variety of interpretive approaches. This study explores the text from the perspective of rhetorical criticism. The classical conception of rhetoric as the art of persuasion and the function of metaphor within persuasive discourses and social settings correlate with the oracular characteristics of Hosea 2 and illuminate its use of specific metaphors. A reading of Hosea 2 from this perspective proposes that the prophets of Israel may have functioned in a manner similar to the orators of ancient Greece, who delivered extended rhetorical discourses designed to discern meaning in contemporary events and to persuade audiences. This study offers a distinctively political reading of Hosea 2 that explores the text as a metaphorical and theological commentary on the political and religious dynamics in Israel at the close of the Syro-Ephraimitic War (731-730 BCE).
