Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of the «Zeitroman» is traced through detailed ana- lysis of five examples of the genre, beginning with Immermann's «Die Epigonen» and concluding with H. Mann's «Im Schlaraffenland». Marking a new direction in German literature of the 19th century, the «Zeit- roman» was frequently concerned with locating the changing relation- ship between social classes in the broad social conditions of the age portrayed. Approaches ranged in formal terms from the panoramic novels of Immermann, Spielhagen and Gutzkow to less ambitious, but artistically more satisfying works later in the century. Tensions typifying the «Zeitroman» include those between universal and epheme- ral concerns, between historical documentation and a fictional rendering of reality, and between characterizing individuals and depicting an age in more abstract terms. Through examination of these varying balances, plus reference to the German «Bildungsroman» and social novels in England and France of the same period, a closer understanding is reached of the much abused term «Zeitroman».

Book Willibald Alexis Zeitroman Das Haus D sterweg and the Vorm rz

Download or read book Willibald Alexis Zeitroman Das Haus D sterweg and the Vorm rz written by Lynne Tatlock and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1984 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On publication in 1835 Willibald Alexis' Zeitroman Das Haus Düsterweg sparked controversy only to be subsequently ignored by specialists on the Vormärz (1815-48). It has been viewed as an anomaly in Alexis' literary production, but in fact lies at the core of the intellectual interests and formal experimentation of Alexis, the prominent Vormärz author, theorist, critic and journalist. Based on techniques derived from Walter Scott, it anticipates the theory and practice of Gutzkow's «Roman des Nebeneinander». Under the aspect of Zerrissenheit it records and analyzes the psychological and political agony of the contemporary scene.

Book How to Read a Moment

Download or read book How to Read a Moment written by Mathias Nilges and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How to Read a Moment, Mathias Nilges shows that time is inseparable from the stories we tell about it, demonstrating that the contemporary American novel offers new ways to make sense of the temporality that governs our present. “Time is a thing that grows scarcer every day,” observes one of Don DeLillo’s characters. “The future is gone,” The Baffler argues. “Where’s my hoverboard!?” a meme demands. Contemporary capitalism, a system that insists that everything happen at once, creates problems for social thought and narrative alike. After all, how does one tell the time of instantaneity? In this moment of on-demand service and instant trading, it has become difficult to imagine the future. The novel emerged as the art form of a rapidly changing modern world, a way of telling time in its progress. Nilges argues that this historical mission is renewed today through works that understand contemporaneity as a form of time shaping that props up our material world and cultural imagination. But the contemporary American novel does not simply associate our present with a crisis of futurity. Through analyses of works by authors such as DeLillo, Jennifer Egan, Charles Yu, and Colson Whitehead, Nilges illustrates that the novel presents ways to make sense of the temporality that controls our purportedly fully contemporary world. In so doing, the novel recovers a sense of possibility and hope, forwarding a dazzling argument for its own importance today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term ‘cityscaping’ is here introduced to characterise the creative process through which the image of the city is created and represented in various media– text, film and artefacts. It thus turns attention away from built urban spaces and onto mental images of cities. One focus is on the question of which literary, visual and acoustic means prompt their recipients’ spatial imagination; another is to inquire into the semantics and functions that are ascribed to the image of a city as constructed in various media. The examples of ancient texts and works of art, and modern literature and films, are used to elucidate the artistic potential of images of the city and the techniques by which they are semanticised. With its interdisciplinary approach, the volume for the first time makes clear how strongly mental images of urban space, both ancient and modern, have been shaped by the techniques of their representation in media.
