Book Algebraic and Geometric Ideas in the Theory of Discrete Optimization

Download or read book Algebraic and Geometric Ideas in the Theory of Discrete Optimization written by Jesus A. De Loera and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, many new techniques have emerged in the mathematical theory of discrete optimization that have proven to be effective in solving a number of hard problems. This book presents these recent advances, particularly those that arise from algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, convex and discrete geometry, generating functions, and other tools normally considered outside of the standard curriculum in optimization. These new techniques, all of which are presented with minimal prerequisites, provide a transition from linear to nonlinear discrete optimization. This book can be used as a textbook for advanced undergraduates or first-year graduate students in mathematics, computer science or operations research. It is also appropriate for mathematicians, engineers, and scientists engaged in computation who wish to gain a deeper understanding of how and why algorithms work.

Book Felix Berezin Life And Death Of The Mastermind Of Supermathematics

Download or read book Felix Berezin Life And Death Of The Mastermind Of Supermathematics written by Misha Shifman and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-04-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Berezin was an outstanding Soviet mathematician who in the 1960s and 70s was the driving force behind the emergence of the branch of mathematics now known as supermathematics. The integral over the anticommuting Grassmann variables that he introduced in the 1960s laid the foundation for the path integral formulation of quantum field theory with fermions, the heart of modern supersymmetric field theories and superstrings. The Berezin integral is named for him, as is the closely related construction of the Berezinian, which may be regarded as the superanalog of the determinant. This book features a masterfully written memoir by Berezin's widow, Elena Karpel, who narrates a remarkable account of Berezin's life and his struggle for survival under the totalitarian Soviet regime. Supplemented with recollections by his close friends and colleagues, Berezin's accomplishments in mathematics, his novel ideas and breakthrough works, are reviewed in two articles written by Andrei Losev and Robert Minlos.

Book Stochastic Optimization Methods in Finance and Energy

Download or read book Stochastic Optimization Methods in Finance and Energy written by Marida Bertocchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of contributions dedicated to applied problems in the financial and energy sectors that have been formulated and solved in a stochastic optimization framework. The invited authors represent a group of scientists and practitioners, who cooperated in recent years to facilitate the growing penetration of stochastic programming techniques in real-world applications, inducing a significant advance over a large spectrum of complex decision problems. After the recent widespread liberalization of the energy sector in Europe and the unprecedented growth of energy prices in international commodity markets, we have witnessed a significant convergence of strategic decision problems in the energy and financial sectors. This has often resulted in common open issues and has induced a remarkable effort by the industrial and scientific communities to facilitate the adoption of advanced analytical and decision tools. The main concerns of the financial community over the last decade have suddenly penetrated the energy sector inducing a remarkable scientific and practical effort to address previously unforeseeable management problems. Stochastic Optimization Methods in Finance and Energy: New Financial Products and Energy Markets Strategies aims to include in a unified framework for the first time an extensive set of contributions related to real-world applied problems in finance and energy, leading to a common methodological approach and in many cases having similar underlying economic and financial implications. Part 1 of the book presents 6 chapters related to financial applications; Part 2 presents 7 chapters on energy applications; and Part 3 presents 5 chapters devoted to specific theoretical and computational issues.

Download or read book Mathematics in Berlin written by Heinrich Begehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-21 with total page 1840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This little book is conceived as a service to mathematicians attending the 1998 International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin. It presents a comprehensive, condensed overview of mathematical activity in Berlin, from Leibniz almost to the present day (without, however, including biographies of living mathematicians). Since many towering figures in mathematical history worked in Berlin, most of the chapters of this book are concise biographies. These are held together by a few survey articles presenting the overall development of entire periods of scientific life at Berlin. Overlaps between various chapters and differences in style between the chap ters were inevitable, but sometimes this provided opportunities to show different aspects of a single historical event - for instance, the Kronecker-Weierstrass con troversy. The book aims at readability rather than scholarly completeness. There are no footnotes, only references to the individual bibliographies of each chapter. Still, we do hope that the texts brought together here, and written by the various authors for this volume, constitute a solid introduction to the history of Berlin mathematics.

Download or read book Computer Algebra in Scientific Computing written by Vladimir P. Gerdt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CASC Workshops are traditionally held in turn in the Commonwealth of IndependentStates(CIS)andoutsideCIS(Germanyinparticular, but, attimes, also other countries with lively CA communities). The previous CASC Wo- shop was held in Japan, and the 12th workshop was held for the ?rst time in Armenia, which is one of the CIS republics. It should be noted that more than 35 institutes and scienti?c centers function within the National Academy of S- ences of Armenia (further details concerning the structure of the academy can be foundhttp://www. sci. am). These institutions are concerned, in particular, with problems in such branches of natural science as mathematics, informatics, physics, astronomy, biochemistry, etc. It follows from the talks presented at the previous CASC workshops that the methods and systems of computer algebra may be applied successfully in all the above-listed branches of natural sciences. Therefore, the organizers of the 12th CASC Workshop hope that the present workshop will help the Armenian scientists to become even more familiar with the capabilities of advanced computer algebra methods and systems and to get in touch with specialists in computer algebra from other countries. The 11 earlier CASC conferences, CASC 1998, CASC 1999, CASC 2000, CASC 2001, CASC 2002, CASC 2003, CASC 2004, CASC 2005, CASC 2006, CASC 2007, and CASC 2009 were held, respectively, in St. Petersburg (R- sia), Munich (Germany), Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Konstanz (Germany), Yalta (Ukraine), Passau (Germany), St.

Book Architecture Independent Loop Parallelisation

Download or read book Architecture Independent Loop Parallelisation written by Radu C. Calinescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture-independent programming and automatic parallelisation have long been regarded as two different means of alleviating the prohibitive costs of parallel software development. Building on recent advances in both areas, Architecture-Independent Loop Parallelisation proposes a unified approach to the parallelisation of scientific computing code. This novel approach is based on the bulk-synchronous parallel model of computation, and succeeds in automatically generating parallel code that is architecture-independent, scalable, and of analytically predictable performance.
