Book ZAMZAM S Faith in the Middle

Download or read book ZAMZAM S Faith in the Middle written by Luella Faith Holwerda and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story, "Faith in the Middle" is Ms. Holwerda's account, from a 4 1/2year-old's perspective, of her family's 1941 experience and its impact on her life. What was to have been an ordinary ocean voyage, turned disastrous. Her words vividly capture her Mother's remarkable courage and faith which buoyed her with extra strength to survive the traumatic ordeal. Ms. Holwerda was traveling with her five brothers and sisters and Mother aboard the ZAMZAM. They were enroute to Africa to join their Father who was already serving as a missionary there. Expectations were for a safe and happy trip. Early in the morning of April 17, 1941, the ZAMZAM was attacked by a German Raider. With shells whizzing overhead and exploding into the ship, the children awakened to a nightmare. Their Mother's prayers and unwavering reminder that "Jesus loves you," calmed them as they abandoned ship, climbed into their lifeboat, and were lowered to the ocean below. However, nothing could prepare them for the adventure ahead, and the emotions of a very frightened little girl come alive through this story. "Faith in the Middle" not only covers their miraculous survival, but also the grief and anguish of her Father as he hears the news that the ZAMZAM is lost with his entire family aboard. Adults, as well as children, will find it hard to put down this book once they pick it up.

Download or read book Inside Arabic Music written by Johnny Farraj and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes hundreds of listeners cheer ecstatically at the same instant during a live concert by Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum? What is the unspoken language behind a taqsim (traditional instrumental improvisation) that performers and listeners implicitly know? How can Arabic music be so rich and diverse without resorting to harmony? Why is it so challenging to transcribe Arabic music from a recording? Inside Arabic Music answers these and many other questions from the perspective of two "insiders" to the practice of Arabic music, by documenting a performance culture and a know-how that is largely passed on orally. Arabic music has spread across the globe, influencing music from Greece all the way to India in the mid-20th century through radio and musical cinema, and global popular culture through Raqs Sharqi, known as "Bellydance" in the West. Yet despite its popularity and influence, Arabic music, and the maqam scale system at its heart, remain widely misunderstood. Inside Arabic Music de-mystifies maqam with an approach that draws theory directly from practice, and presents theoretical insights that will be useful to practitioners, from the beginner to the expert - as well as those interested in the related Persian, Central Asian, and Turkish makam traditions. Inside Arabic Music's discussion of maqam and improvisation widens general understanding of music as well, by bringing in ideas from Saussurean linguistics, network theory, and Lakoff and Johnson's theory of cognition as metaphor, with an approach parallel to Gjerdingen's analysis of Galant-period music - offering a lens into the deeper relationships among music, culture, and human community.

Download or read book Sacred Waters written by Celeste Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing sacred waters and their associated traditions in over thirty countries and across multiple time periods, this book identifies patterns in panhuman hydrolatry. Supplying life’s most basic daily need, freshwater sources were likely the earliest sacred sites, and the first protected and contested resource. Guarded by taboos, rites and supermundane forces, freshwater sources have also been considered thresholds to otherworlds. Often associated also with venerated stones, trees and healing flora, sacred water sources are sites of biocultural diversity. Addressing themes that will shape future water research, this volume examines cultural perceptions of water’s sacrality that can be employed to foster resilient human–environmental relationships in the growing water crises of the twenty-first century. The work combines perspectives from anthropology, archaeology, classics, folklore, geography, geology, history, literature and religious studies.

Download or read book River Spirit written by Leila Aboulela and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spellbinding new novel from New York Times Notable Author and Caine Prize winner Leila Aboulela about an embattled young woman’s coming of age during the Mahdist War in 19th century Sudan. Leila Aboulela, hailed as “a versatile prose stylist” (New York Times) has also been praised by J.M. Coetzee, Ali Smith, and Ben Okri, among others, for her rich and nuanced novels depicting Islamic spiritual and political life. Her new novel is an enchanting narrative of the years leading up to the British conquest of Sudan in 1898, and a deeply human look at the tensions between Britain and Sudan, Christianity and Islam, colonizer and colonized. In River Spirit, Aboulela gives us the unforgettable story of a people who—against the odds and for a brief time—gained independence from foreign rule through their willpower, subterfuge, and sacrifice. When Akuany and her brother Bol are orphaned in a village raid in South Sudan, they’re taken in by a young merchant Yaseen who promises to care for them, a vow that tethers him to Akuany through their adulthood. As a revolutionary leader rises to power - the self-proclaimed Mahdi, prophesied redeemer of Islam - Sudan begins to slip from the grasp of Ottoman rule, and everyone must choose a side. A scholar of the Qur’an, Yaseen feels beholden to stand against this false Mahdi, even as his choice splinters his family. Meanwhile, Akuany moves through her young adulthood and across the country alone, sold and traded from house to house, with Yaseen as her inconsistent lifeline. Everything each of them is striving for - love, freedom, safety – is all on the line in the fight for Sudan. Through the voices of seven men and women whose fates grow inextricably linked, Aboulela’s latest novel illuminates a fraught and bloody reckoning with the history of a people caught in the crosshairs of imperialism. River Spirit is a powerful tale of corruption, coming of age, and unshakeable devotion – to a cause, to one’s faith, and to the people who become family.

Book excerpt: Terrorists wanting to proclaim jihad resort to the power of mystical Islam, including dreams, black magic, and the control of supernatural entities known as jinn, to steal Pakistan's nuclear weapons. As attacks on colleges increase, Samir, the education advisor to the prime minister, sets out to unravel the mystical powers being exploited. While truths are uncovered, separating myths from facts, Ifrit, a powerful jinn, is contacted by terrorists to fulfill their agenda in exchange for having the jinn rule the earth. What follows is a sequence of fast-moving events when a terrorist head in Afghanistan declares himself to be the Mahdi, the Islamic leader prophesied to rule the world, and calls upon all Muslims to join him, leading to a nuclear standoff between Pakistan and India, to a fight between good and evil, and to an uncertain end if the imbroglio will lead to an apocalypse and end of times.

Book The Accidental Captives

Download or read book The Accidental Captives written by Carolyn Gossage and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2012-03-17 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1941, a passenger ship was attacked and sunk by Nazi Germans. This is the story of seven Canadian women survivors detained in Germany. In April 1941, seven Canadian women became prisoners of war while on a voyage from New York City to Cape Town. Their aging Egyptian liner, the Zamzam, was sunk off the coast of South Africa by the German raider Atlantis. The passengers were transferred to a prison ship and eventually put ashore in Nazi-occupied France. As "non-aliens," all 140 Americans were released after five weeks in captivity, and with the help of theLifephotographer in their midst, the news of their narrow escape became an overnight sensation. The hapless Canadians were taken to Bordeaux and became part of a group of 28 women and children interned in various German detention camps. By a stroke of luck, the Canadians eventually received permission to travel to Berlin where they were left to fend for themselves and adapt to life among "the enemy." As prisoners-at-large, they established contacts with American journalists and diplomats, an elderly Jewish professor, and even with Nazi propagandist P.G. Wodehouse. Finally, in June 1942, an exchange was arranged and the Canadians were able to board a special diplomatic Freedom Train bound for Lisbon, and from there they got back across the Atlantic to New York and new-found freedom.
