Book excerpt: Swiss American critical graphic designer Zak Kyes is known for his thoughtful approach to design, especially with regard to collaboration. While billed as documenting Kyes first solo exhibition, this catalog from the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig is also a representation of the relationships formed by Kyes as he collaborates with his clients and partners, who include artists, architects, writers, curators, graphic designers and editors. Starting with curator Barbara Steiner, the small format publication brings together a range of works by Kyes that have been expanded and enlivened by a host of collaborators, hence the book s subtitle, Working With.mApart from studio projects, Kyes critical practice encompasses publishing, curating and creating site specific projects for and with art institutions. His work engages with publications as sites for debate and exchange rather than documentation. He currently teaches in the MA program at ECAL (L Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne) and the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, where, since 2006, he has also been Art Director.

Dallegret's own life and work denies anything so predictable as a neat synopsis, but in essence his work, beginning in Paris in the late 1950s and early 60s, and later taking in New York and Montreal, absorbs everything from intricate line drawings for a series of astrological vehicles and designs for a number of machines (from those that assist in cooking a meal to others that generate literature) to the 'A Home Is Not a House' collaboration with the critic Reyner Banham; a drugstore/gallery in Montreal; proposals for a new Montreal Palais Metro; designs for chairs, more cars and yet more machines; a film collaborative set up to shoot a western; contributions to the Montreal 67 Expo; engraved bars of soap; subversive credit cards; 'ironique' villas and light installations. The book will illustrate a great many of these works and contains essays on Dallegret's life and legacy by the historians Alessandra Ponte and Laurent Stalder.

The 2011 exhibition, presented at the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia and Graham Foundation in Chicago, featured room-size models of five platonic solids created in collaboration with architect Srdjan Weiss. Project Projects designed a catalogue with documentation from both installations, in addition to supplementary materials, including drawings, plans, models, and an illustrated timeline of Tyng's significant life and work.
