Book excerpt: Swiss American critical graphic designer Zak Kyes is known for his thoughtful approach to design, especially with regard to collaboration. While billed as documenting Kyes first solo exhibition, this catalog from the Museum of Contemporary Art Leipzig is also a representation of the relationships formed by Kyes as he collaborates with his clients and partners, who include artists, architects, writers, curators, graphic designers and editors. Starting with curator Barbara Steiner, the small format publication brings together a range of works by Kyes that have been expanded and enlivened by a host of collaborators, hence the book s subtitle, Working With.mApart from studio projects, Kyes critical practice encompasses publishing, curating and creating site specific projects for and with art institutions. His work engages with publications as sites for debate and exchange rather than documentation. He currently teaches in the MA program at ECAL (L Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne) and the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, where, since 2006, he has also been Art Director.

An investigation into color reproduction and printing, "Color Library" is a tool for artists, designers, photographers, and printers. It aims to widen the possibilities of color printing, and reflects on our contemporary perception of color as it is shaped by the recent developments in print production. Primarily conceived as a digital platform, "Color Library" offers a variety of colorimetric profiles automatically applicable to images, based on color combinations generated according to their perceptual, technical, and conceptual relevance. It not only offers an alternative to standard color printing, but also affirms a distinctive vision of how to print colors and process them" (Verlagshomepage).

Book excerpt: ¿East Coast Europe,¿ which took place during Spring 2008, is a project about the perceptions of contemporary European identity and its relation to spatial practices and international politics. The title ¿East Coast Europe¿ is a word play. ¿Europe¿ in the title is the central topic for investigation, its contemporary culture, expansion, and its status as a continuing social project. ¿East Coast¿ refers to two distinct edges of Europe, both real and imaginary¿the geographical East Coast of the United States of America and the political ¿East Coast¿ of the European Union. The project invited leading figures in culture and politics from the two east coasts¿of the United States of America, and of the countries in the European Union and its vicinity to comment on their perception of Europe today. East Coast Europe dives into the urgent details of a dense network of contemporary experience of the European Union¿s extensive exchange of knowledge, people, and goods with the East Coast of the United States and also with its own eastern border. What are its challenges and possibilities for social, political and spatial practices? With contributions by Can Altay, Marina Abramović, Paddy Ashdown, Zdenka Badovinac, Katherine Carl, Eda Čufer, Reinier de Graaf, Mladen Dolar, Lisa Farjam, Srdjan Jovanović Weiss, Carin Kuoni, Zak Kyes, Jacques Le Goff, Aaron Levy, Genevieve Maitland Hudson with Cyril Blanc, Markus Miessen, Viktor Misiano, Miran Mohar, Shamim Momin, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Orchard, Dan Perjovschi, Marjetica Potrč, Neboj¿a ¿erić Shoba, Michael Shamiyeh, Erzen Shkololli, Taryn Simon, Nedko Solakov, Alenka Suhadolnik, Milica Tomić, Kazys Varnelis, Felix Vogel, Borut Vogelnik, Jordan Wolfson, and Sislej Xhafa.

Wide White Space focuses on graphic designers who create innovative institutional identities, forge unique collaborations with curators, and launch their own exhibition-based initiatives. The installation and exhibition design for Wide White Space aim to take on the challenges inherent in presenting any show on graphic design: how to make it possible for visitors to directly engage with the materials on display; how to gather and present a breadth of historical and contemporary pieces, which take the form of both original physical objects and restaged exhibition projects; and how to speak to both peers within the design community and a broader audience.

Book excerpt: God & Co is published to accompany an exhibition at the Architectural Association of the work of the French Montreal-based artist and architect Francois Dallegret (1937 - ). Dallegret's own life and work denies anything so predictable as a neat synopsis, but in essence his work, beginning in Paris in the late 1950s and early 60s, and later taking in New York and Montreal, absorbs everything from intricate line drawings for a series of astrological vehicles and designs for a number of machines (from those that assist in cooking a meal to others that generate literature) to the 'A Home Is Not a House' collaboration with the critic Reyner Banham; a drugstore/gallery in Montreal; proposals for a new Montreal Palais Metro; designs for chairs, more cars and yet more machines; a film collaborative set up to shoot a western; contributions to the Montreal 67 Expo; engraved bars of soap; subversive credit cards; 'ironique' villas and light installations. The book will illustrate a great many of these works and contains essays on Dallegret's life and legacy by the historians Alessandra Ponte and Laurent Stalder.
