Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering Kwanzaa and Beyond with Friends is the 2nd book in the Malo's Amazing Adventures! series. It is dedicated to Malo's 4th Grade Class of 2012 at Wicklund Elementary School and to Kylie Johnson and the students of Woodside Parents Nursery School Class of 2013. Both classes were gracious enough to invite me to their respective class to speak about Kwanzaa. The book is also dedicated to all the other inquisitive little souls who are not afraid to ask the questions: How? What? When? Who? Where? and the all-important Why? While preparing to speak to the two classes, Malo's father discovers that Kwanzaa is more than a cultural celebration. It embodies principles or "nguzo" that are universal, enhance personal growth and development and promote good citizenship. In the process, he discovers and shares the richness of Kwanzaa and its appeal beyond the traditional and mainly African-American audience. Maybe you don't speak or understand a foreign language such as Kiswahili. Maybe you have difficulties pronouncing foreign words such as "eng-oo-zoo saba" or "vitu saba" i.e. the seven principles and symbols of Kwanzaa - all Swahili words. Don't let that prevent you from learning about the richness and beauty of celebrations such as Kwanzaa and their relevance to everyday life. Read on to discover the joy of learning a different language or experiencing a different culture.

Book African Homecoming

Download or read book African Homecoming written by Katharina Schramm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans and others in the African diaspora have increasingly “come home” to Africa to visit the sites at which their ancestors were enslaved and shipped. In this nuanced analysis of homecoming, Katharina Schramm analyzes how a shared rhetoric of the (Pan-)African family is produced among African hosts and Diasporan returnees and at the same time contested in practice. She examines the varying interpretations and appropriations of significant sites (e.g. the slave forts), events (e.g. Emancipation Day) and discourses (e.g. repatriation) in Ghana to highlight these dynamics. From this, she develops her notions of diaspora, home, homecoming, memory and identity that reflect the complexity and multiple reverberations of these cultural encounters beyond the sphere of roots tourism.

Download or read book Idlewild written by Ronald J. Stephens and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1912, white land developers founded Idlewild, an African American resort community in western Michigan. Over the following decades, the town became one of the country’s foremost vacation destinations for the black middle class, during its peak drawing tens of thousands of visitors annually and hosting the era’s premier entertainers, such as The Four Tops, Della Reese, Brook Benton, and George Kirby. With the civil rights movement and the resulting expansion of recreation options available to African Americans, Idlewild suffered a sharp social and economic decline, and by the early 1980s the town had become a struggling retirement community in the midst of financial and political crises. Meticulously researched and unearthing never-before-seen historical material, Ronald J. Stephens’s book examines the rapid rise and decline of this pivotal landmark in African American and leisure history, in the process exploring intersections among race, class, tourism, entertainment, and historic preservation in the United States. Featuring a wealth of fieldwork on contemporary Idlewild, the book also takes a candid look at recent revitalization efforts and analyzes the possibilities for a future resurgence of this national treasure.

Book Philosophy of African American Studies

Download or read book Philosophy of African American Studies written by Stephen Ferguson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking book, Stephen C. Ferguson addresses a seminal question that is too-often ignored: What should be the philosophical basis for African American studies? The volume explores philosophical issues and problems in their relationship to Black studies. Ferguson shows that philosophy is not a sterile intellectual pursuit, but a critical tool to gathering knowledge about the Black experience. Cultural idealism in various forms has become enormously influential as a framework for Black studies. Ferguson takes on the task of demonstrating how a Marxist philosophical perspective offers a productive and fruitful way of overcoming the limitations of idealism. Focusing on the hugely popular Afrocentric school of thought, this book’s engaging discussion shows that the foundational arguments of cultural idealism are based on a series of analytical and historical misapprehensions. In turn, Ferguson argues for the centrality of the Black working class—both men and women—to Black Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two high school misfits in Depression-era Cleveland, were more like Clark Kent--meek, mild, and myopic--than his secret identity, Superman. Both boys escaped into the worlds of science fiction and pulp magazine adventure tales. Jerry wrote his own original stories and Joe illustrated them. In 1934, the summer they graduated from high school, they created a superhero who was everything they were not. It was four more years before they convinced a publisher to take a chance on their Man of Steel in a new format--the comic book. The author includes a provocative afterword about the long struggle Jerry and Joe had with DC Comics when the boys realized they had made a mistake in selling all rights to Superman for a mere $130.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named a Best Art Book of 2017 by the New York Times and Artforum In South of Pico Kellie Jones explores how the artists in Los Angeles's black communities during the 1960s and 1970s created a vibrant, productive, and engaged activist arts scene in the face of structural racism. Emphasizing the importance of African American migration, as well as L.A.'s housing and employment politics, Jones shows how the work of black Angeleno artists such as Betye Saar, Charles White, Noah Purifoy, and Senga Nengudi spoke to the dislocation of migration, L.A.'s urban renewal, and restrictions on black mobility. Jones characterizes their works as modern migration narratives that look to the past to consider real and imagined futures. She also attends to these artists' relationships with gallery and museum culture and the establishment of black-owned arts spaces. With South of Pico, Jones expands the understanding of the histories of black arts and creativity in Los Angeles and beyond.
