Book Chicago s Polish Downtown

Download or read book Chicago s Polish Downtown written by Victoria Granacki and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrating the first 75 years of Chicago's influential Polish neighborhood. Polish Downtown is Chicago's oldest Polish settlement and was the capital of American Polonia from the 1870s through the first half of the 20th century. Nearly all Polish undertakings of any consequence in the U.S. during that time either started or were directed from this part of Chicago's near northwest side. Chicago's Polish Downtown features some of the most beautiful churches in Chicago - St. Stanislaus Kostka, Holy Trinity and St. John Cantius - stunning examples of Renaissance and Baroque Revival architecture that form part of the largest concentration of Polish parishes in Chicago. The headquarters for almost every major Polish organization in America were clustered within blocks of each other and four Polish-language daily newspapers were published here. The heart of the photographic collection in this book is from the extensive library and archives of the Polish Museum of America, still located in the neighborhood today.

Book Adulterous Nations

Download or read book Adulterous Nations written by Tatiana Kuzmic and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Adulterous Nations, Tatiana Kuzmic enlarges our perspective on the nineteenth-century novel of adultery, showing how it often served as a metaphor for relationships between the imperialistic and the colonized. In the context of the long-standing practice of gendering nations as female, the novels under discussion here—George Eliot’s Middlemarch, Theodor Fontane’s Effi Briest, and Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, along with August Šenoa’s The Goldsmith’s Gold and Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis—can be understood as depicting international crises on the scale of the nuclear family. In each example, an outsider figure is responsible for the disruption experienced by the family. Kuzmic deftly argues that the hopes, anxieties, and interests of European nations during this period can be discerned in the destabilizing force of adultery. Reading the work of Šenoa and Sienkiewicz, from Croatia and Poland, respectively, Kuzmic illuminates the relationship between the literature of dominant nations and that of the semicolonized territories that posed a threat to them. Ultimately, Kuzmic’s study enhances our understanding of not only these five novels but nineteenth-century European literature more generally.

Book Straddling the Iron Curtain

Download or read book Straddling the Iron Curtain written by Machteld Venken and published by Studies in History, Memory and Politics. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book neither researches structural integration, nor starts from ethnically defined categories. At the basis are two clearly distinguishable migration streams entering Belgium in the aftermath of World War II. First, there were about 350 soldiers from Poland who served with the Allies, had met Flemish young women during their liberation march through Flanders, married their financ?es in 1945 and 1946 and settled in their wives' hometowns and villages. And second, there were the Ostarbeiterinnen-- Soviet young women of Ukrainian, Russian, or Belarusian decent, who after the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, were deported to Nazi Germany to do forced labor. While at work, the young women met Western European deported workers, volunteers, and prisoners of war. Although any off-duty contact between them was prohibited, numerous love affairs flourished and after their liberation by the Western Allies, about 4,000 Ostarbeiterinnen chose to migrate further to Belgium rather than be repatriated to the Soviet Union where they could be accused of collaboration ... The central question of this study is as follows: are the war experiences and war memories of these two migration streams similar because they were all displaced persons living in the 'same standardised refugee world'?"--Introd.

Book Women s Narratives and the Postmemory of Displacement in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Women s Narratives and the Postmemory of Displacement in Central and Eastern Europe written by Simona Mitroiu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the different mechanisms and forms of expression used by women to come to terms with the past, focusing on the variety and complexity of women’s narratives of displacement within the context of Central and Eastern Europe. The first part addresses the quest for personal (post)memory from the perspective of the second and third generations. The touching collaboration established in reconstructing individual and family (post)memories offers invaluable insights into the effects of displacement, coping mechanisms, and resilience. Adopting the idea that the text itself becomes a site of (post)memory, the second part of the volume brings into discussion different sites and develops further this topic in relation to the creative process and visual text. The last part questions the past in relation to trauma and identity displacement in the countries where abusive regimes destroyed social bonds and had a lasting impact on the people lives.
