Book Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain

Download or read book Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain written by Mary Flowers Braswell and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 1995-10-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the only known English version of Chretien de Troyes's romance of the naive knight Perceval, Sir Perceval of Galles. The work uses Perceval's ridiculous behavior as a late medieval satire of courtliness. Accompanying this tale is Ywain and Gawain, a translation of a second Chretien poem, Le Chevalier au Lion. Unlike Sir Perceval, this poem extols the virtues of chivalry and honor. These complementary works form an excellent introduction to Middle English Arthurian romance, as they include editing, glosses, introductions, and a very helpful glossary for beginning students.

Book Ywain and Gawain and Chr Tien de Troyes Yvain

Download or read book Ywain and Gawain and Chr Tien de Troyes Yvain written by Thomas Schachtebeck and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (Fachbereich Englisch), course: Medieval English Literatures II: English Arthurian Romances, language: English, abstract: There is no doubt that Chrétien de Troyes was one of the most influential writers in the Middle Ages, and his poem Yvain: The Knight of the Lion (Yvain: Le Chevalier au Lion) is probably one of the greatest masterpieces of medieval writing. Since there are many different redactions of Chrétien's Yvain: The Knight of the Lion (hereafter Yvain) today - such as Hartmann von Aue's Iwein, the Welsh Owein, and the Middle English Ywain and Gawain (hereafter YG) - it can be rightfully claimed that Yvain had a huge impact on the literary world of the Middle Ages. Referring to the English world of literature, YG is - of course - the most popular redaction of Chrétien's Yvain. However, there are a lot of critics who argue whether this Middle English redaction of Chrétien's Yvain should be regarded "as a work of art in its own right or as merely a translation" [Finlayson 1969: 312] of its French source. In order to give proof that YG is a work of its own rather than a pure literal translation of Chrétien's Yvain, this paper aims to highlight and analyse some striking differences between these two poems. Therefore, this paper will first focus on some differences in terms of form and style, and then, it will concentrate on some matters which are related to different meanings and different focal points of YG and Yvain.

Book Spatial Resistance

Download or read book Spatial Resistance written by Christian Beck and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial Resistance: Literary and Digital Challenges to Neoliberalism utilizes various literary and digital artifacts to show the potential and possibility of changing the ways we consider the spaces we inhabit. As many spaces become increasingly privatized and policed, it is necessary to contemplate ways in which corporate and state-controlled spaces can not only be subverted but fundamentally changed to embrace the diverse lived experiences of all peoples. Through an analysis of fictional and virtual spaces, readers will be able to identify new ways to institute spatial change in everyday spatial lives in an effort to promote more democratic and equal experiences. While this book uses primarily the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to engender change, it also provides practical examples to amend, change, or update the actions to suit particular needs and spaces. This book shows that radical politics and the possibility of significant change can reside in just about any object or narrative; it is the responsibility of the individual to take up the task of creating social change premised on equality, liberty, and solidarity.

JAhrhunderts aktuell.

Book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Rethinking Romance

Download or read book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Rethinking Romance written by Markus Widmer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), University of Zurich (English Seminar), course: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses how the author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight uses, explores and sometimes undermines the conventions of the Arthurian romance genre. As a basis for this investigation, a definition of the genre is sketched, using a structuralist model along with a set of typical motifs found in many romances. Having established the essential genre elements the papier then examines the way the Gawain-poet makes use of these in his text. After identifying the fundamentally generic structure of the poem the author concentrates on incidents where the poet plays ironically with the reader's genre expectations.

Book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight vs Sword of the Valiant The representation of the Green Knight in comparison

Download or read book Sir Gawain and the Green Knight vs Sword of the Valiant The representation of the Green Knight in comparison written by Nicole Piontek and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: English Medieval Studies, language: English, abstract: The Gawain-Poet introduces a mysterious and magical character in his poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. The Green Knight is a dangerous and powerful character in the beginning of the plot. He sets the happenings in motion and is the reason for Gawain’s journey. However, the Green Knight is uncovered to not be the main villain of the story. Therefore, there must be hints at his weakness and vulnerability throughout the plot, just as the depiction of magical elements. The same applies to the movie adaptation Sword of the Valiant directed by Stephen Weeks. Although Weeks’ adaptation shows clear alterations to the poem, the beginning and the ending of the plots can still be compared. As for the beginning, in both versions the Green Knight enters the Arthurian court and explains his errand. Towards the end, both versions of Gawain find themselves in the Green Chapel. Thus, these two scenes are comparable. This paper aims at answering the question whether the representation of the Green Knight in the original poem corresponds to the movie Sword of the Valiant. Moreover, this paper is going to focus on the aspect of vulnerability and magical elements. Thus, the following questions will be answered: How is vulnerability portrayed in contrast to each other, and in how far is magic emphasized through the depiction of the Green Knight?

The creator of the Arthurian romance as a genre, Chrétien is revealed in this work as a witty, versatile writer who mastered both the soaring flight of emotion and the devastating aside and was as skillful a debater of the finer points of love as he was a describer of battles.
