Book Yves Klein

Download or read book Yves Klein written by Nuit Banai and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denounced as a charlatan and fêted as a mystic, French artist Yves Klein (1928–62) scandalized the art world with his enthusiastic embrace of postwar mass culture and his exploitation of controversial publicity tactics. Today, we know Yves Klein not only as one of the most radical artists of the postwar period, but also as an iconic role model for contemporary practices—he reinvented abstract painting, conceived new horizons for performance art, and was a trailblazer in the realm of land, body, and conceptual art. In this new critical biography, Nuit Banai examines the relationship between Klein’s brief life and his wide repertoire of artistic practices. While surveying the artist’s life, Banai establishes that Klein’s brilliance was, above all, performative, revealing that he created and inhabited myriad public identities: bourgeois, judo expert, painter, avant-garde artist, collaborator, politician, fascist, and showman, among others. With each persona, Banai shows, Klein invented new ways to communicate his paradoxical message of spiritual enlightenment and Dada iconoclasm to a rapt and unsuspecting audience. Illuminating the many facets of Klein’s influential artistic career, Yves Klein is an invaluable introduction to the inventor of the inimitable International Klein Blue.

Book excerpt: At a moment when the progress of technology brings the first half of the twentieth century to the depths of the Middle Ages or the late Empire, the message I bear within me is that of life and nature, and I would have you share it, in as much as my companions will know my thinking even better than myself: for they are thousands, they will reflect it thousands of times, while I myself am only one... At the crossroads of light where I have arrived, there are but two possible paths: the path of obscurity, withdrawal, maceration, meditation, and renunciation, and the more arduous and glorious path of sacrifice to the community.

Book excerpt: "Discussing more than a hundred years of art history, Monochromes: From Malevich to the Present is a lavish visual journey through some of the most iconic and visually stunning works of twentieth-century art. It offers very clear and understandable interpretations of an important and little understood artistic movement with international scope, and presents a cogent argument for the centrality of the monochrome to modern art. Historical survey, theoretical examination, illustrated chronicle, and aesthetic exploration-the four main texts-offer a thorough and fascinating account of this major artistic trend, tracing its evolution from its origins in revolutionary Russia to its numerous and diverse manifestations throughout the world."--Terry Berne, cultural critic for Art in America

Book excerpt: A new title of the 5-volume series covering the fundamental events and pivotal works of international art in the 20th century. With the third volume, this history of art goes past the halfway mark of the 20th century to enter the contemporary sphere. The book relates how artists reacted to the greatest tragedy of the 20th century and responded to the advent of the society of mass communication and consumption, to the moulding of the world in which we find ourselves ever more deeply immersed today. The collapse and rebirth of Europe, the years of the Cold War and the evolution leading to the upheavals of 1968 are fundamental themes of this third volume.

Book excerpt: Art Catalogue Index (A.C.I.) aims to provide a comprehensive list of all the catalogues raisonnés and reviews on artists born between 1780 and the postwar period. This first edition is focused on the so-called 'modern' period. It starts with the birth of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, in 1780 in Montauban, who competed for the Prix de Rome in 1800 with his contemporaries; he therefore both witnessed and took part in this turning point in time which opened the gates of the 'modern' period, and which led up to today and contemporary art. Published with BFAS, Geneva, and Thierry Meaudre, Paris. English text.

Book Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism

Download or read book Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism written by MarinR. Sullivan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sculptural Materiality in the Age of Conceptualism is structured around four distinct but interrelated projects initially realized in Italy between 1966 and 1972: Yayoi Kusama?s Narcissus Garden, Michelangelo Pistoletto?s Newspaper Sphere (Sfera di giornali), Robert Smithson?s Asphalt Rundown, and Joseph Beuys?s Arena. These works all utilized non-traditional materials, collaborative patronage models, and alternative modes of display to create a spatially and temporally dispersed arena of matter and action, with photography serving as a connective, material thread within the sculpture it reflects. While created by major artists of the postwar period, these particular projects have yet to receive substantive art historical analysis, especially from a sculptural perspective. Here, they anchor a transnational narrative in which sculpture emerged as a node, a center of transaction comprising multiple material phenomenon, including objects, images, and actors. When seen as entangled, polymorphous entities, these works suggest that the charge of sculpture in the late postwar period came from its concurrent existence as both three-dimensional phenomena and photographic image, in the interchanges among the materials that continue to activate and alter the constitution of sculpture within the contemporary sphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Edizioni Conz of the Italian collector, publisher and photographer Francesco Conz–including portfolios, large silkscreen prints on fabrics and objects–are among the finest and most elaborate art editions of the second half of the 20th century. A friend and patron of Viennese Actionism, Fluxus, Concrete Poetry, and Lettrism, he was an obsessive, knowledgeable enthusiast open to all the arts, for whom hospitality, the magic of community, and respect for the arts were more important than any mercantile aspirations. This publication is the first comprehensive catalogue raisonné of the editions published by Conz between 1972 and 2009. Comprising more than 500 editions, it is both a reflection of his passions and a memorial to the art of the avant-gardes. Texts by contemporaries such as Alison Knowles, Dick Higgins, Milan Knižak, Eugen Gomringer, Emmett Williams, Nicholas Zurbrugg, and others complete the richly illustrated catalogue. FRANCESCO CONZ (1935–2010) grew up in a wealthy family of Austro-Hungarian descent in the Italian Veneto. After coming into contact with the art scene in Berlin and New York in the early 1970s, he traveled to art festivals around the world and invited artists to the Palazzo Baglioni in Asolo for happenings and per- formances. Since 2016, the Berlin-based Archivio Conz has been working to catalogue, research, and restore his extraordinary collection for the public, which includes more than 4,000 works and commissioned editions by over 300 international artists, as well as 30,000 photographs and ephemera.
