This book was released on 1997 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents much of what is presently known about the impacts of climate change on a number of sectors in British Columbia and Yukon, and also summarizes outcomes of a climate change workshop. It compiles papers on the following subjects; climate variability and change; impacts on the physical environment, including sea levels, stream flow, glaciers, and geomorphic processes; impacts on natural ecosystems; impacts on economic sectors, managed ecosystems, and lifestyles, including impacts on air quality, agriculture, Aboriginal lifestyles, and energy production; and human responses to climate change, including governmental and industry strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The appendix includes climate change scenarios for British Columbia and Yukon.

Book Hydrologic and Climatic Analysis of the Yukon River Basin 1977 2006

Download or read book Hydrologic and Climatic Analysis of the Yukon River Basin 1977 2006 written by Shaoqing Ge and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study analyzes hydrologic and climatic data from 1977 to 2006 over the Yukon River Basin. Results of discharge analyses at four gauging stations (Eagle, Stevens Village, Nenana, and Pilot) show that the runoff in low-flow season (November to April) is low and has small variations. In high-flow season (May to October), the runoff is high with big variations. Maximum discharge occurs in June due to snowmelt over the basin, except the Nenana River, which occurs in July due to glacier-melt. Daily discharge analyses of gauging stations (Stevens Village and Pilot) show that the timing of peak flow shifts to an earlier time. During the study period, annual discharge increased by 18,213 ft3/s (8.0%) for the whole basin. The monthly analyses of discharge at the Pilot Station (the lower basin) show a positive trend (177,000 ft3/s) in May confident at 97%. April has an increase of 4,586 ft3/s with confidence over 85%. The negative trends (7,502 ft3/s-12,184 ft3/S) in other months are not statistically significant. To better understand the underlying reason for the stream flow changes, the climate analysis is conducted to find the correlation between runoff and climate variables. From 1977 to 2006, the basin mean temperatures from May to September are 6.6 °C to 15.4 °C. Winter season (October to April) temperatures range from -19.1 °C to -1.8 °C. June temperature has increased by 2.2 °C (confident at 99.7%); it decreased by 5.9 °C in January with confidence around 92.3%; April has an insignificant increase of 1.2 °C. Trends in other months are not statistically significant. For the correlation between runoff and temperature, strong and positive correlation is detected in May and strong and negative correlation is detected in August. Correlation in other months is not significant. Mean annual temperature during 1977-2006 increased by 0.3 °C. Within the study period, basin mean precipitation is high (43mm to 63mm) from June to September, with maximum precipitation in August (63mm) and it is low (13mm to 28mm) from October to May. Negative trend is observed in June (15mm) with confidence over 93%; positive trends (4mm to 15mm) in some other months are not statistically significant. Precipitation during the study period has increased by 11mm in winter and by 16mm in summer. For the precipitation and runoff correlation, it is strong and positive in summer but very weak in winter. Mean annual precipitation during 1977-2006 has increased by 28mm (or 8%). Results of this study indicate that the discharge increase in late spring and early summer during 1977-2006 over the Yukon River is probably due to the early warming in April. Precipitation increase by 11 mm in winter and 16 mm in summer contribute to the flow increase over the basin in May and September. The melting of glacier and thawing of permafrost may also contribute to the hydrologic changes of the Yukon River. The results of this study will help us better understand the hydrologic regime changes and their link to climate in high-latitude regions"--Leaf iii-iv.
