Book excerpt: This paper was prepared to explore current community-based forest management processes and practices in other jurisdictions, and their possible application in the Yukon. The introduction reviews the background to the interest in community-based forest management in the Yukon, and notes the difference between community-based forest management and community forestry. The main part of the paper focuses on four case studies of community forest management in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, with particular attention to their management structures. An additional case study looks at the process used to develop a Yukon community-based wildlife management plan. In the final section, lessons from these examples are discussed and potential considerations for implementing community-based forest management are highlighted in light of legislative issues.
