Book Youth Revolution BeTheChange

Download or read book Youth Revolution BeTheChange written by Kiara Nirghin and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth Revolution is the inspirational story of how Kiara Nirghin, a sixteen-year-old high-school student from Johannesburg, overcame severe health obstacles to win the grand prize at the 2016 International Google Science Fair for her unique and innovative solution to worldwide drought. Having experienced bacterial meningitis, undiagnosed bilharzia and severe weight loss, Kiara was forced to postpone her school career for hospitalisation, with a real chance of losing her hearing, her sight and the use of her limbs. Youth Revolution not only covers her journey from the hospital bed to the international stage as the winner of the science award, but also looks at issues surrounding stagnant youth innovation, while considering the dangers of lacking diversity in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). The book includes contributions from prominent women in science and education, among them Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. Youth Revolution is a deeply human and truly inspirational real-life story that will enthral teenagers and adults alike, proving that even ‘ordinary’ teenagers can do extraordinary things.

Book excerpt: Visit theUnspun website which includes Table of Contents and the Introduction. The World Wide Web has cut a wide path through our daily lives. As claims of "the Web changes everything" suffuse print media, television, movies, and even presidential campaign speeches, just how thoroughly do the users immersed in this new technology understand it? What, exactly, is the Web changing? And how might we participate in or even direct Web-related change? Intended for readers new to studying the Internet, each chapter in Unspun addresses a different aspect of the "web revolution"--hypertext, multimedia, authorship, community, governance, identity, gender, race, cyberspace, political economy, and ideology--as it shapes and is shaped by economic, political, social, and cultural forces. The contributors particularly focus on the language of the Web, exploring concepts that are still emerging and therefore unstable and in flux. Unspun demonstrates how the tacit assumptions behind this rhetoric must be examined if we want to really know what we are saying when we talk about the Web. Unspun will help readers more fully understand and become critically aware of the issues involved in living, as we do, in a wired society. Contributors include: Jay Bolter, Sean Cubitt, Jodi Dean, Dawn Dietrich, Cynthia Fuchs, Matthew Kirschenbaum, Timothy Luke, Vincent Mosco, Lisa Nakamura, Russell Potter, Rob Shields, John Sloop, and Joseph Tabbi.

Book Youth Resistance Research and Theories of Change

Download or read book Youth Resistance Research and Theories of Change written by Eve Tuck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth resistance has become a pressing global phenomenon, to which many educators and researchers have looked for inspiration and/or with chagrin. Although the topic of much discussion and debate, it remains dramatically under-theorized, particularly in terms of theories of change. Resistance has been a prominent concern of educational research for several decades, yet understandings of youth resistance frequently lack complexity, often seize upon convenient examples to confirm entrenched ideas about social change, and overly regulate what "counts" as progress. As this comprehensive volume illustrates, understanding and researching youth resistance requires much more than a one-dimensional theory. Youth Resistance Research and Theories of Change provides readers with new ways to see and engage youth resistance to educational injustices. This volume features interviews with prominent theorists, including Signithia Fordham, James C. Scott, Michelle Fine, Robin D.G. Kelley, Gerald Vizenor, and Pedro Noguera, reflecting on their own work in light of contemporary uprisings, neoliberal crises, and the impact of new technologies globally. Chapters presenting new studies in youth resistance exemplify approaches which move beyond calcified theories of resistance. Essays on needed interventions to youth resistance research provide guidance for further study. As a whole, this rich volume challenges current thinking on resistance, and extends new trajectories for research, collaboration, and justice.

This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PRAISE FOR "YES! Youth-Led Changemaking" ..".Ali Raza Khan is an amazing world pioneer in moving society to this very different definition of success in growing up. He demonstrated how thousands of poor young people, of whom little was expected, could almost immediately, if challenged respectfully, create teams and substantial changes and profits. Does your daughter have this power? If you care for her or for your society, please read this book carefully." Bill Drayton, CEO Ashoka: Innovators for the Public - Ali Raza Khan has been pursuing a revolutionary idea for over 21 years - youth as a solution, not as a problem. He has demonstrated again and again that when young people are provided structured opportunities, they show the ability to transform themselves from victims to leaders, from at-risk to at-strength, from sheltered to shapers of society, and from service seekers to service providers. Recently, he experimented with an idea that points to a new understanding of the entrepreneurial potential of the marginalized youth. He engaged 5,950 of the most neglected, destitute, marginalized, and half-educated youth studying in the state-owned charity-based technical institutions in Pakistan, both boys and girls, in a four-week Enterprise Development Competition. What he wanted to prove is that these young people, despite living in the poorest families or neighborhoods and having very little or no education, can still turn their lives around if they are valued and trusted as equal partners in development. Each team was given a grant of approximately US$25, on the condition that if the young people were able to generate a profit, it would be donated to YES, and in the case of a loss, YES alone would bear it. He designed this model because of the strong resistance from parents and teachers to his offer of providing small loans without interest to young people, as they thought that the young people would not be able to pay back even a small amount of the loan if there was a loss in the business. His organization invested a total of US$34,900. After the completion of the competition, not to his surprise, the young people had actually generated a profit of US$29,000 from carrying out a wide range of need-based projects in their communities and had provided services to over 60,000 people of all ages. Their projects included, but were not limited to: health and first aid projects; skill development projects; peace-building projects; handicraft projects; sports projects; cosmetic projects; child care projects; female empowerment projects; jewelry projects; information technology projects; and grocery selling projects. Out of 1,190 teams, 926 youth teams, over 77%, were able to generate a profit, while 130 teams stood with no profit and no loss, and 134 teams suffered a loss. Many of the participating students continue to use their new found entrepreneurial skills and mindset to make a difference in their communities as well as create jobs and opportunities for themselves and other Youth, directly showing and experiencing ways out of poverty and despair through meaningful entrepreneurial contribution and self-efficacy. ----- The time is ripe for a new idea which provides an alternative vision of what is desirable and possible - a vision which may truly reflect what is missing and needed. We must provide at least one opportunity to every young person to explore their entrepreneurial potential. We must move away from crisis reduction programs to strength-based programs. We have a goldmine of talent in the shape of the young people in Pakistan and the world. They need not only education and skills, but also an opportunity to discover the champions within themselves. We must find new ways to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit, across the board, including the marginalized youth. This book provides a roadmap how to do it and gives specific advice and strategies on how to replicate the massive success of the YES Network.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By philosophical definition, power is the ability to influence the behavior of others with or without resistance. By youth motivational speaker Carlos Ojeda Jr.'s definition, power is the ability to get things done! The ability to bring about positive change in the world. He believes that true power is evident in education, technological advancement, and in revolution, but no more so than in the hands of the youth that make these things happen. The Power of Youth is a ground breaking, interactive book that is designed to inspire students to cultivate the power that lies within them. The book echoes Carlos' motivational presentations by illustrating to students that their voice is their power, and that power can help them change their lives, the lives of their family, their community and their world. It teaches students the elements of personal power that they possess and how to harness the skills they need to create positive change in their lives and community.
