Book After School Programs to Promote Positive Youth Development

Download or read book After School Programs to Promote Positive Youth Development written by Nancy L. Deutsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of this SpringerBrief presents a series of papers compiled from a conference addressing how after-school programs can promote positive youth development (PYD) hosted by Youth-Nex, the University of Virginia Center to Promote Effective Youth Development. It examines summer learning and best practices for different types of after-school programs by drawing on the experiences of researchers, program staff, and youth participants. It also presents case studies of five specialized programs and discusses their strengths, limitations, and challenges. In addition, the brief offers recommendations drawn from across the two volumes for how researchers, policy makers, and practitioners can move the field forward and maximize the potential of after-school time and programs to promote positive youth development for children and adolescents. Featured case studies of specialized after-school programs include: Richmond, Virginia’s ROSMY. The Clubhouse: Where Technology Meets Imagination. The Young Women Leaders Program (YWLP). Whatever It Takes (WIT) Program. UTEC of Lowell, Massachusetts. After-School Programs to Promote Positive Youth Development, Volume 2, is a must-have resource for policy makers and related professionals, graduate students, and researchers in child and school psychology, family studies, public health, social work, law/criminal justice, and sociology.

Book Innovations in Child and Youth Programming A Special Issue from the National AfterSchool Association

Download or read book Innovations in Child and Youth Programming A Special Issue from the National AfterSchool Association written by Vincent D. LaFontan and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In partnership with the National AfterSchool Association, we are happy to introduce this supplemental issue. Whereby each issue of New Directions for Youth Development usually presents research on one topic, this special issue was open to article submissions that could address any topic of youth development and after-school education. Interestingly, the majority of the papers we received clustered around the topic of youth programming and offer a window into the innovations of this fast growing field of study. We welcome any feedback.

Book Youth Participatory Evaluation A Field in the Making

Download or read book Youth Participatory Evaluation A Field in the Making written by Kim Sabo and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2003-08-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth participatory evaluation (YPE) combines action research and participatory evaluation's commitment to stakeholder empowerment with the new philosophy of positive youth development, which emphasizes young people as community assets and resources rather than as a source of social problems. This volume illustrates a broad range of approaches YPE advocates have used to enrich evaluation practice and strength programs for youth by involving young people as researchers and evaluators. Kim Sabo begins by arguing that youth-led evaluation by it's very nature promotes youth development, because these evaluations constitute Vygotskian zones of proximal development, situations where developmental learning through performance can take place. Les Voakes uses a case study of a conference organized by Town Youth Participation Strategies to illustrate how involving youth in the planning, operational decision-making, and evaluation of programs that directly affect them can benefit both the young participants and the programs themselves. Jonathan K. London, Kristen Zimmerman and Nancy Erbstein provide case studies of evaluation methods that link community and youth development practices. Genevieve Lau, Nancy H. Netherland and Mary Haywood show how YPE can be used as a training process for youth workers, one that enables them to better understand the needs and desires of youth and therefore design better programs for them. Roger A. Hart and Jasmine Rajbhandary examine Nepal's "children's clubs", and Save the Children's YPE-inspired evaluation of these clubs, to show how children can be encouraged to develop their own programs and largely evaluate them by themselves. Bonny L. Gildin describes the All Stars Talent Show Network, an innovative program that unites youth, program funders and adult volunteers in program development and evaluation. Finally, David Fetterman sums up and reflects on the lessons learned by the contributors to this volume. This is the 98th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Evaluation.

Book Neighborhood Family Peer and Youth Center Experiences as Predictors of Urban Youth Development

Download or read book Neighborhood Family Peer and Youth Center Experiences as Predictors of Urban Youth Development written by Jessica Anne Sanderson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, positive youth development (PYD) and ecological frameworks have been widely researched and incorporated into youth programs across the United States. The PYD framework emphasizes the strengths and competencies of youth as they move through adolescence and the relationships and contexts that promote competencies (Benson, 2002; 2003). Ecological approaches take into account the nested and complex interplay between various systems such as families, peers, youth programs, and neighborhoods (Bronfenbrenner, 1977). The present study used hierarchical linear modeling and structural equation modeling to explore the influence of supportive relationships on youth outcomes. The results of this study demonstrated that supportive relationships with family members, peers and youth program staff predicted youths' psychological well-being and prosocial orientation. That is, each type of supportive relationship was related to an increased sense of well-being and increased prosocial orientation. Moderation between each of the microsystems was tested, and it was found that the main effects model best predicted each of the youth development outcomes. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to explore the impact of neighborhood poverty level on the relationship between supportive relationships and each youth outcome. The results indicated that neighborhood poverty level did not influence the relationship between supportive relationships and outcomes. Supportive relationships were equally predictive of outcomes across neighborhoods. Finally, structural equation modeling was used to create latent variables and test a model describing the relationship between family, peer, and youth program microsystems and youth outcomes. Fit and modification indices suggested that a mediation model best fit the data. More specifically, the effect of family on youth outcomes is both direct and mediated by peer support and youth program experiences. The results of this study demonstrate the significant influence of families, peers, and youth programs on youth development outcomes. This is especially true of family relationships which were found to be predictive of youths' relationships with peers and experiences in youth programs. Finally, these findings underscore the importance of policy and youth programming aimed to foster positive and supportive relationships for youth.

Book Training the Future Child Health Care Workforce to Improve the Behavioral Health of Children Youth and Families

Download or read book Training the Future Child Health Care Workforce to Improve the Behavioral Health of Children Youth and Families written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing numbers of evidence-based interventions have proven effective in preventing and treating behavioral disorders in children. However, the adoption of these interventions in the health care system and other systems that affect the lives of children has been slow. Moreover, with few exceptions, current training in many fields that involve the behavioral health of children falls short of meeting the needs that exist. In general, this training fails to recognize that behavioral health disorders are among the largest challenges in child health and that changing cognitive, affective, and behavioral health outcomes for children will require new and more integrated forms of care at a population level in the United States. To examine the need for workforce development across the range of health care professions working with children and families, as well as to identify innovative training models and levers to enhance training, the Forum on Promoting Children's Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health held a workshop in November 2016. Workshop panelists and participants discussed the needs for workforce development across the range of health care professions working with children, youth, and families, and identified innovative training models and levers for change to enhance training. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
