Book Youth and Leadership Training in the Niger Delta

Download or read book Youth and Leadership Training in the Niger Delta written by Sonpie Kpone-Tonwe and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study poses the question: how did the people of the eastern Niger Delta prepare their youth for leadership? It then presents a detailed study of the Yaa cultural tradition of the Ogoni from pre-colonial to present times; their history and politics; and considers the perspective of youth leadership and training. The study illustrates how the Yaa cultural tradition determined social class structures, discouraged anti-social behaviour, and inculcated attitudes of generosity and diligence, and knowledge of the arts in those growing up in the tradition. The author goes on to show how the teaching of this tradition affected youth organisations, particularly MOSOP, one of the most effective modern youth movements in the Niger Delta region today; and suggests that some of the lessons might be integrated into national education policies. The author is Senior Lecturer in Political History at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Book International Perspectives on Youth Conflict and Development

Download or read book International Perspectives on Youth Conflict and Development written by Colette Daiute and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume aims to shift the foundation of youth conflict study from the more typical focus on maturation, behavior, and personality to a characterization of youth as participants in society. It also expands the analysis of youth development to include societal problems such as political instability, unequal access to material resources, racism, and social injustice. Offering new insights about the interdependent spheres of conflict involving young people, this groundbreaking, international compilation describes processes of a violent world rather than of violent youth.

Book Youth Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Youth Entrepreneurship written by Chris Ehiobuche and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges and opportunities facing the Nigerian youths demand rethinking of new ways of doing things. Youth unemployment and underemployment are at a record high. More than ever, the Nigerian youths are in dire need of finding other avenues to explore in pursuit of life endeavors. Youth employment, underemployment, and unemployment are serious concerns for our society, civilization, and the nation. Ehiobuche and Madueke took a different approach to discussing and presenting a practical approach to youth entrepreneurshipfrom the notion of a shared responsibility for the change of mindset from falling into the victims theory dimensions to intelligent ventures and resilience. Their model presents insight on how a paradigm shift among the youths and the society in general from job search to business development may well lead to entrepreneurs and self-productive citizens. The authors hope to inspire, inform, and encourage todays youths to become tomorrows entrepreneurs, leaders, and good citizens. Making the transition from seeking employment, unemployment, or underemployment to self-employment/entrepreneurship is the primary purpose of this book. The topics include the following: Conquering personal and cultural roadblocks to entrepreneurship Shifting mental and physical focus from employee to employer Avoiding common pitfalls in starting and running a sustainable small business Making the best out of being a youth The authors urge the Nigerian youths to avoid falling into a victim mentality and start their paradigm shift into the mindsets of entrepreneurs.

Book Environment and Conflict

Download or read book Environment and Conflict written by John Agbonifo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental degradation is a fast-growing problem that not only threatens to erode future development and undermine economic prosperity, but also victimizes and displaces ordinary peoples and communities in some of the most fragile areas of the world. Often grassroots opposition and mobilization is seen through a secular lens, implying that collective action is merely material and provincial. In this book John Agbonifo argues for a decolonization of the environment and to see the environment from the perspective of local communities. He examines the case of the Ogoni struggle against the Shell oil company, and asks how may we understand the struggle of the Ogoni against the state and Shell? Was the conflict merely about a minority ethnic drive at securing provincial advantages in distributional matters, or the legitimate actions of a local community aimed at preserving its environment and livelihood? Exploring the material and symbolic, provincial and nationalist dimensions of Ogoni motivation, Agbonifo's book is the first serious attempt to discuss these issues. The book will appeal to scholars and students of the Niger Delta conflicts, resource-related conflicts and social movements, in Africa and elsewhere. Those researching in the fields of development studies, political geography, civil society and collective action will also find it useful.

Book Putting Nigeria to Work

Download or read book Putting Nigeria to Work written by Volker Treichel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public debate in Nigeria on the country s progress since its return to democracy in 1999 has been dominated by two seemingly opposite themes. The first theme is the strong growth performance of the non-oil economy. This success has been marked by sharp increases in agriculture, trade, and construction and by the emergence of new industries in the financial, telecommunications, and entertainment sectors, supported by sound macroeconomic policies and structural reforms. The second, opposing theme is the seeming failure of Nigeria s much improved economic performance to reduce unemployment, especially among the young. Rising levels of unemployment have increased militancy among the young and impacted negatively on public order. 'Putting Nigeria to Work: A Strategy for Employment and Growth' looks at the ways in which Nigeria s improved economic performance has impacted the labor market. A number of relevant factors are carefully examined and analyzed, including industrial policy and the investment environment, the effects of restrictive trade policies on growth, and the ability of the technical and vocational education system to address the country s skills gap. The book proposes a strategy that will allow Nigeria to increase the availability of quality jobs, reduce rising youth unemployment, and sustain and further accelerate the country s economic performance and growth. At the core of this strategy are targeted interventions aimed at removing binding constraints to growth in sectors of the economy that are already growing fast, but have the potential to grow faster and have significant employment-creating potential.

Book Nigeria s Niger Delta

Download or read book Nigeria s Niger Delta written by Sabella Ogbobode Abidde and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems and challenges of the Niger Delta predate Nigeria as a Republic. The resultant violence can be traced to 1966, when the late Isaac Boro and his colleagues attempted to secede from Nigeria due, in large part, to the underdevelopment of the region. Historical reality aside, since 1970 oil has displaced agriculture as Nigeria’s primary revenue earner and it has, for the last four decades, been the nation’s breadbasket. But in spite of this, the Niger Delta remains vastly underdeveloped and has been given the least federal presence. These deficiencies led to high unemployment, social dislocations, youth restiveness, and extralegalities. It was these realities that bred disaffection with the government and the multinational oil companies and eventually, to violent militancy. Between 2003 and 2009, it also led to low intensity conflict between militant youths and the Nigerian government. In the summer of 2009, however, the Nigerian government extended an offer of presidential pardon (amnesty) to the militants. The amnesty program was intended to bring peace and quiet to the region. However, this has not been the case. In spite of the financial and political resources that have been expended, the region continues on the path of volatility. This book looks at the issue of nationhood, the cause and cost of the crisis, past approaches and current efforts at solving the crisis. In addition, it offers a tenable solution to the decades-old crisis. Furthermore, the case is made that unless there is a fundamental restructuring of the Nigerian state and its governing structure and institutions, the problems of the region—and the larger problems that makes the country such a difficult to place to live in and govern, is likely to continue.

Book Natural Resources Conflict and Sustainable Development

Download or read book Natural Resources Conflict and Sustainable Development written by Okechukwu Ukaga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Niger Delta Region has in the past two decades experienced protracted violent conflicts. At the roots of these violent conflicts are the genuine quests of the people for sustainable development that is based on social justice, equity, fairness and environmental protection. Although richly endowed, the region is hopelessly poor. This paradox of poverty in the midst of plenty has been attributed to a myriad of factors ranging from Nigeria's centralized federalism, to ethno-regional domination, corruption, poor governance, and oil-related environmental degradation. Development in the Niger Delta is vital not only to the stability and prosperity of Nigeria, but also to global energy security. This book provides unique insights into the challenges of development and peace building in the Niger Delta, and insights into other resource-rich but poverty-stricken, conflict-prone regions of the world.
