Book excerpt: Youssef Nabil is a leading contemporary artist from the Middle East. His complete works reproduced in this monograph are put into context with a critical essay by Hans Ulrich Obrist and an interview with Marina Abramovic. Youssef Nabil's work oscillates between a personal photographic journal and portraits. He has photographed many international stars, including Sting, David Lynch, Isabella Rossellini, Paolo Coelho, Louise Bourgeois, Jean Nouvel, Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve, and Robert Wilson. Since 2003, he has produced a number of self-portraits that reflect his dislocated life away from Egypt in settings linked to his childhood or his travels. These scenes portray a combination of worldly realities and serene dreams, loneliness and fame, eroticism and death.

Book Unsettling Colonial Modernity in Islamicate Contexts

Download or read book Unsettling Colonial Modernity in Islamicate Contexts written by Kara Adbolmaleki and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By focusing on colonial histories and legacies, this edited volume breaks new ground in studying modernity in Islamicate contexts. From a range of disciplinary perspectives, the authors probe ‘colonial modernity’ as a condition whose introduction into Islamicate contexts was facilitated historically by European encroachment into South Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa. They also analyze the various modes through which, in Europe itself, and in North America by extension, people from Islamicate contexts have been, and continue to be, otherized in the constitution and advancement of the project of modernity. The book further brings to light a multiplicity of social, political, cultural, and aesthetic modes of resistance aimed at subverting and unsettling colonial modernity in both Muslim-majority and diasporic contexts.

Book excerpt: This edited collection challenges and re-imagines what is ‘heritage’ in Britain as a globalised, vernacular, cosmopolitan ‘post-nation’. It takes its inspiration from the foundational work of public intellectual Stuart Hall (1932–2014). Hall was instrumental in calling out embedded elitist conceptions of ‘The Heritage’ of Britain. The book’s authors challenge us to reconsider what is valued about Britain’s past, its culture and its citizens. Populist discourses around the world, including Brexit and ‘culture war’ declarations in the UK, demonstrate how heritage and ideas of the past are mobilised in racist politics. The multidisciplinary chapters of this book offer critical inspections of these politics and dig deeply into the problems of theory, policy and practice in today’s academia, society and heritage sector. The volume challenges the lack of action since Hall rebuked ‘The Heritage’ twenty years ago. The authors featured here are predominantly Black Britons, academics and practitioners engaged in culture and heritage, spurred by the killing of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement to contest racist practices and structures that support them. This fact alone makes the volume a unique addition to the Routledge Museum & Heritage Studies repertoire. The primary audience will be academics, but it will also attract culture sector practitioners and heritage institutions. However, the book is particularly aimed at scholars and community members who identify as Black and are centrally concerned with questions of identity and race in British society. Its Open Access status will facilitate access to the book by all groups in society.

Book The Way of Imagination

Download or read book The Way of Imagination written by Alejandro Jodorowsky and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-07-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Explains the theoretical basis behind psychomagic, Jodorowsky’s shamanic healing technique • Details the author’s technique of “psychotrance” to access his subconscious mind to discover the most suitable psychomagic remedy • Shares passionate correspondence between Jodorowsky and patients and admirers who have successfully used psychomagic methods for personal healing Through films, books, comics, and art spanning seven decades, legendary filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky has offered his singular surrealistic perspective on the fundamentally dreamlike nature of reality. This perspective also underlies his healing technique known as psychomagic, which uses the symbolism of the unconscious to understand and mend reality as if it were a dream. In The Way of Imagination, the master offers a detailed exploration of the mechanisms by which psychomagic works to heal our most pressing emotional and spiritual wounds. He examines the development of this magical form of shamanic healing and its roots in the work of René Daumal, Éliphas Levi, filmmaker Luis Buñuel, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, Mexican curanderas, and others. He describes the four maladies of the soul, the initial stages of psychomagic’s development into a practice, and how he crafted the first psychomagic prescriptions to speak directly to the subconscious through the language of dreams. Above all, Jodorowsky explains, psychomagic is a therapy of action, rather than one of words. Sharing passionate correspondence between himself and patients and admirers, the author demonstrates how people have successfully used psychomagic to make profound changes in their lives. He shares detailed accounts of how he uses Tarot readings to determine a diagnosis as well as how he uses a trance state—what he calls “psychotrance”—to access his subconscious mind to discover the most suitable psychomagic remedy. Presenting a complete immersion in the techniques of psychotrance and psychomagic, this guide allows you to work with the dreamlike nature of reality and move forward on the path to healing.

Book Jeff Koons

Book excerpt: The definitive survey of Jeff Koons’s Hulk Elvis paintings, including an extensive interview with the artist in his studio. From the outset of his controversial career, Jeff Koons turned the traditional notion of the work of art and its context inside out. Focusing on unexpected yet banal objects as models for his work, he eschewed typical standards of "good taste" in art, instead embracing what he perceives as conventional middle-class values in order to expose the vulnerabilities of aesthetic hierarchies and value systems. Koons’s declared strategies are to make art beautiful, to strive for objectivity, to give back the familiar, and to reflect, and thus empower, the viewer. The works of Koons’s series Hulk Elvis burst with energy and precision yet mystify with their complex permutations and combinations of figurative and abstract elements. A charged mix of inflatable monkeys, geishas, birds, the Incredible Hulk, and the Liberty Bell jostle against realistically rendered landscapes, gestural paintings, steam engines and horse-drawn carriages, negative silhouettes, and underlying dot screens.
