Download or read book Save Them All written by Wendy Green and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Save Them All contains true and shocking stories of underprivileged and troubled kids living in the beautiful Bay Area of Northern California. The book is written with empathy, irony, and a touch of comedy and also gives deep insight into the lives of everyday kids, on political issues, the struggles facing our public school teachers, and the societal issues that bring on many of these problems. Many of the stories contain disturbing accounts of the issues facing the everyday life of the "at-risk" students and the struggles of a rookie teacher contending with the conflict between her desire to contribute and the realities of society's failures. Topics are suicide, gangs, drug abuse, murder, and child abuse and neglect. The book is not a condemnation of our public schools but is meant to be an insight into the realities politicians and society refuse to address. It is a must-read if you care about kids, schools, the politics of education, and how to make a difference. Save Them All will shock and inspire, educate and entertain, create laughter and tears, and possibly influence the reader to implement change. Download or read book Teeth written by Mary Otto and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NPR Best Book of 2017 "[Teeth is] . . . more than an exploration of a two-tiered system—it is a call for sweeping, radical change." —New York Times Book Review "Show me your teeth," the great naturalist Georges Cuvier is credited with saying, "and I will tell you who you are." In this shattering new work, veteran health journalist Mary Otto looks inside America's mouth, revealing unsettling truths about our unequal society. Teeth takes readers on a disturbing journey into America's silent epidemic of oral disease, exposing the hidden connections between tooth decay and stunted job prospects, low educational achievement, social mobility, and the troubling state of our public health. Otto's subjects include the pioneering dentist who made Shirley Temple and Judy Garland's teeth sparkle on the silver screen and helped create the all-American image of "pearly whites"; Deamonte Driver, the young Maryland boy whose tragic death from an abscessed tooth sparked congressional hearings; and a marketing guru who offers advice to dentists on how to push new and expensive treatments and how to keep Medicaid patients at bay. In one of its most disturbing findings, Teeth reveals that toothaches are not an occasional inconvenience, but rather a chronic reality for millions of people, including disproportionate numbers of the elderly and people of color. Many people, Otto reveals, resort to prayer to counteract the uniquely devastating effects of dental pain. Otto also goes back in time to understand the roots of our predicament in the history of dentistry, showing how it became separated from mainstream medicine, despite a century of growing evidence that oral health and general bodily health are closely related. Muckraking and paradigm-shifting, Teeth exposes for the first time the extent and meaning of our oral health crisis. It joins the small shelf of books that change the way we view society and ourselves—and will spark an urgent conversation about why our teeth matter.

No. The receptionist just called your name and asked you to have a seat - in the DENTIST'S CHAIR Every sight, sound, and smell triggers haunting childhood memories. For those who have had unpleasant experiences in the dentist's chair, the anticipation of each visit can be debilitating - and the reason why dental visits are put off until the point of no return. With over 75% of the population suffering from gum disease in varying stages, we are faced with difficult choices and sometimes - no choices: 1-1/2 million people each year get dentures. Periodontal disease can contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pre-term low-birth weight babies, stroke, and more. With notes and quotes from dental professionals, Section One may help you keep your teeth and improve your health. In Section Two, Saundra delivers a blunt and sometimes humorous (sure, she can laugh now ) account of her life-changing experience with periodontal disease, bone loss, and tooth loss. Her story sheds light on the stages of shock and devastation of realizing your teeth are leaving you, and learning to accept their replacements. Got Teeth? A Survivor's Guide walks you through it - step by step - from "HOW did this happen to ME?" to "WHY didn't anybody tell ME?" Her answer? "BECAUSE NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT " I was blessed I read Got Teeth? at the very time I was awaiting surgery to remove all my natural teeth If it were not for Saundra and her keen wisdom about adapting to change, I would have gone in blind because NOBODY TALKS ABOUT IT. Armed with this knowledge and knowing which questions to ask made all the difference in the world. I recommend this book to anyone facing dental trauma, or especially if someone you love is dealing with it. Linda S. Please visit www.gotteethguide.com

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth and Save Your Life Illustrated written by George Catlin and published by David De Angelis. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the true seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveler who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.
