Book excerpt: The perfect gift for the soap fan, from an award-winning daytime television insider with tongue planted firmly in cheek Everyone knows soaps arent real life. Or are they Just in time for gift-giving season, here is You Know Your Life Is a Soap Opera If . . . Fast, funny, and far from implausible, this charming little book shares all the truisms soap fans will recognize from their favorite storylines -- and from life. Things like: --Everybody has secrets. Everybody else knows them. --Be kind to strangers. They are likely to be your family. --No former spouse ever really dies. --Never talk to yourself -- some scheming bitch will overhear and use it against you. --If you marry for money again and again, it wont buy you happiness -- but you will have a great wardrobe. --Dont reject a man because he's evil -- he could develop into a (smoldering, enigmatic, and/or brooding) romantic hero. --Youd be robbing yourself of the full courtroom experience if you were not threatened with contempt at least once. --Okay, the church burned down, the cake exploded, and your father was arrested for embezzlement while walking you down the aisle . . . Stop crying like this is the only wedding youre ever going to have. Filled with knowing asides and the affection that comes with an intimate knowledge of the genre, it's sure to top soap opera fans wish list.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the debut of These Are My Children in 1949, the daytime television soap opera has been foundational to the history of the medium as an economic, creative, technological, social, and cultural institution. In Her Stories, Elana Levine draws on archival research and her experience as a longtime soap fan to provide an in-depth history of the daytime television soap opera as a uniquely gendered cultural form and a central force in the economic and social influence of network television. Closely observing the production, promotion, reception, and narrative strategies of the soaps, Levine examines two intersecting developments: the role soap operas have played in shaping cultural understandings of gender and the rise and fall of broadcast network television as a culture industry. In so doing, she foregrounds how soap operas have revealed changing conceptions of gender and femininity as imagined by and reflected on the television screen.

Book The Survival of Soap Opera

Download or read book The Survival of Soap Opera written by Sam Ford and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2010-11-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soap opera, one of U.S. television's longest-running and most influential formats, is on the brink. Declining ratings have been attributed to an increasing number of women working outside the home and to an intensifying competition for viewers' attention from cable and the Internet. Yet, soaps' influence has expanded, with serial narratives becoming commonplace on most prime time TV programs. The Survival of Soap Opera investigates the causes of their dwindling popularity, describes their impact on TV and new media culture, and gleans lessons from their complex history for twenty-first-century media industries. The book contains contributions from established soap scholars such as Robert C. Allen, Louise Spence, Nancy Baym, and Horace Newcomb, along with essays and interviews by emerging scholars, fans and Web site moderators, and soap opera producers, writers, and actors from ABC's General Hospital, CBS's The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, and other shows. This diverse group of voices seeks to intervene in the discussion about the fate of soap operas at a critical juncture, and speaks to longtime soap viewers, television studies scholars, and media professionals alike.

Book Crossroads

Download or read book Crossroads written by Dorothy Hobson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Crossroads', one of the most successful programmes on television, has attracted a huge and devoted audience of some 15 million regular viewers. Yet, like many soap operas, it is derided by the press and treated with distaste by other programme-makers. Indeed, despite its popularity, its very future currently hangs in the balance. While doing independent research on popular television in the ATV studios in 1981, Dorothy Hobson observed the storm that developed around the company's decision to dispense with Meg Mortimer, star of 'Crossroads'. The repercussions of that announcement were immense and highlighted the gulf between the broadcasting authorities and the progaramme's critics, and the 'Crossroads' production team and the audience. Through talking to the actors, the programme controller and the viewing public, she went on to explore the contradictions of why and how a soap opera is made and viewed, examining the appeal of 'Crossroads' and attempting to locate the programme as part of contemporary popular culture. The result is a revealing, controversial but also very absorbing analysis of a soap opera in crisis.
