Download or read book Sailing Wondertime A Family Voyage from Seattle to New Zealand written by Sara Dawn Johnson and published by Sara Dawn Johnson. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "People have told us how lucky we are, to get to sail far away. My typical response is to say luck has little to do with it, that we've worked so very hard, made many difficult decisions, and given up so much for so many years to get to this place on the Earth. But on nights like this, under a sky full of stars and our spinnaker full of warm trade wind pulling us deeper into the South Pacific Ocean, I see how very lucky we truly are to be here together." In 2011, the Johnson family of four left their comfortable home in the Pacific Northwest, trading it in for a life of unpredictability, adventure, and joy aboard their 38-foot sailboat, Wondertime. With their two young daughters, Sara and Michael sailed north to Canada, south to Mexico, then west across the Pacific, eventually landing in New Zealand. All along the way, Sara kept an online journal of their travels and trials, her stories followed by hundreds of friends and family members. Now, the best of her stories, essays, and voyage logs are collected in this freshly-edited volume for all to enjoy. Much more than a typical travel log, this is the story of a family's journey into uncertainty, and coming out on the other side knowing that the only thing that's truly certain is the importance of treasuring time with the ones you love.

How did America begin? That simple question launches the acclaimed author of In the Hurricane's Eye and Valiant Ambition on an extraordinary journey to understand the truth behind our most sacred national myth: the voyage of the Mayflower and the settlement of Plymouth Colony. As Philbrick reveals in this electrifying history of the Pilgrims, the story of Plymouth Colony was a fifty-five year epic that began in peril and ended in war. New England erupted into a bloody conflict that nearly wiped out the English colonists and natives alike. These events shaped the existing communites and the country that would grow from them.

Download or read book The Voyage of the Frog written by Gary Paulsen and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adventure novel about survival at sea from the Newbery Award–winning author of Northwind. “An epic, often lyrical journey of self-discovery.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) ALA/YALSA Best Book for Young Adults ALA Notable Book for Children ALA/YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers David thought he was alone, that the ocean around him was all there was of the world. The wind screamed, the waves towered, and his boat, the twenty-two foot fiberglass FROG, skidded and bucked and, each moment, filled deeper and grew heavier with sea water. David thought surely he was dead at fourteen. His uncle Owen, who had taught him about sailing safely, would be so angry. Owen had died only days ago, his last wish for David to take the FROG out on his own, and sail her beyond sight of the coast, and once there, scatter Owen’s ashes. David had done this the evening before, but he hadn’t thought of a storm roaring across the Pacific, or of the terror of being alone later in the dark hundreds of miles from home with no radio or flares and little food. He hadn’t thought of a shark attacking, or of the four killer whales, or the oil tanker large as a city about to sink him and the FROG . . . But in fact, David wasn’t alone at all. He’d had the FROG as a partner from the first—his uncle’s guiding spirit. He had only to learn that. “Paulsen’s spare prose offers an affecting blend of the boy’s inner thoughts and keen observations of the power of nature to destroy and to heal.” —School Library Journal

Download or read book Interdependent Wealth written by Steve Legler and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2014, as SHIFT your Family Business came out, Steve began hearing about Bowen Family System's Theory, and that it could be useful when working with business families and families of wealth. Curious, he searched for THE book to explain how and why this was true.Unable to find that book, he embarked instead on learning first hand, through Bowen Systems training programs. Five years later, he has written the book he sought in vain. His goal is to help enterprising family leaders and their successors develop a shared vision to sustain their wealth and legacy beyond the next generation. They say the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. In many ways teaching is a better forum for this material, because with a teacher-student relationship, there is give and take, so you can quickly adjust when you notice that you are not coming across the way you hoped. Writing a book is less forgiving, so the challenge is bigger, but I'm up for it.The other reason that now is the time for this book is that while I am by no means a BFST expert, I am at a point where I have learned quite a bit, yet I still remember what it's like to be brand new at this. I remember what it was like to read Murray Bowen's words and shake my head and wonder, and then think I understood, and then realize I still didn't get it. I remember what it was like to say "wow" after hearing faculty members explain things. I'll try to share those important stories when they are useful to understanding the material.I come from a business family and married into another business family, and I've learned about serving business families and had my calling here. I immersed myself in courses and training programs in coaching, mediation and facilitation, and then leapt into the deep end of Bowen Family Systems Theory training in 2014 for four years. I am not afraid to offer my opinion. This is not a book by a BFST expert, and it is not a "how to" book by any stretch of the imagination. If people read it and feel like they learned something useful, I will consider it a job well done.
Download or read book The Voyage written by Robert Vescio and published by EK Books. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Displaced by war and conflict, a refugee family sets out on a voyage into the unknown. Told in only a few words (one word per page) this is the powerful story of a family fleeing their war-torn country and making a dangerous trip across the ocean to a new life in a new land. ‘Chaos’ begins the story, as the family escapes. ‘Wild’ is the midway point, as the small boat battles through a storm. ‘Companion’ marks the sighting of a whale that briefly keeps them company as their voyage continues. ‘Beauty’ is the sight of a green, beautiful land ahead of them. ‘Safe’ is the beginning of their new life in their new home. Simple, yet evocative, The Voyage gives new meaning to the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words," as Robert Vescio’s sparse text and Andrea Edmond’s beautiful illustrations encourage young readers to create their own background story and thus identify more deeply with the plight of refugees and those less fortunate.

Book excerpt: Beth Luxenberg was an only child. Or so everyone thought. Six months after Beth's death, her secret emerged. It had a name: Annie. Praise for Annie's Ghosts "Annie's Ghosts is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read . . . From mental institutions to the Holocaust, from mothers and fathers to children and childhood, with its mysteries, sadness, and joy--this book is one emotional ride."--Bob Woodward, author of The War Within and State of Denial "Steve Luxenberg sleuths his family's hidden history with the skills of an investigative reporter, the instincts of a mystery writer, and the sympathy of a loving son. His rediscovery of one lost woman illuminates the shocking fate of thousands of Americans who disappeared just a generation ago."--Tony Horwitz, author of A Voyage Long and Strange and Confederates in the Attic "I started reading within minutes of picking up this book, and was instantly mesmerized. It's a riveting detective story, a moving family saga, an enlightening if heartbreaking chapter in the history of America's treatment of people born with what we now call special needs." -- Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don't Understand and You're Wearing That "This is a memoir that pushes the journalistic envelope . . . Luxenberg has written a fascinating personal story as well as a report on our communal response to the mentally ill." -- Helen Epstein, author of Where She Came From and Children of the Holocaust "A wise, affecting new memoir of family secrets and posthumous absolution." -- The Washington Post "Annie's Ghosts will resonate for many, whether the chords have to do with family secrets, the Depression, memories of a thriving Detroit, the Holocaust's horrors, or the immigrant experience." -- The Detroit Free Press
