Download or read book Your Cheatin Heart written by Chet Flippo and published by Biography of Hank Williams. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hank Williams died in 1953 at the age of twenty-nine, from a lethal combination of alcohol and the pain killers he had used for years to ease the chronic pain of a congenital defect in the spine, he was already a legend. The first musician to lift country music out of the backwoods and into the popular music charts, he became the most influential country music singer and song-writer of the century. Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen have hailed him as a major influence, and his songs have been recorded by such diverse artists as Elvis Costello and The Carpenters. Chet Flippo's compelling biography is a fascinating tribute to a musician and his world, a history of country music encapsulated in one man's career.

Bill ran an insurance business that was doing well and always stayed longer hours than needed, and his new bride was alone in a big empty house that should have been full of love. Susan tried her best to get Bill to notice her more, but it was no use. Bill started sleeping on the couch and sometimes would come home later than any normal husband who loved his wife. One night Susan got out of bed and went downstairs to the living room where Bill was sleeping. She turned on the light and as she was standing with both hands on her hips she noticed something red on his collar. She bent over and grabbed the neck of his collar smelled it and said, "Just what I thought?" She shook him to wake him up, but he was too drunk that it would take more than just a few shakes to wake him up. She said, "I know just the thing to wake this cheating man up." Susan had all she could take from his coldness, and took the beer bottle out of his hand, and broke it over his head. Bill jumped off the couch and said, "Why did you do that?" "Are you cheating on me?" asked Susan as she wept. Bill replied, "What in the hell are you talking about?" "Don't pretend you’re not." exclaimed his brokenhearted wife. "If you want to know the real truth, I was never really in love with you, and didn't want to hurt your feelings so I married you anyway. Are you satisfied?" explained Bill. Instead of Susan throwing a big fit she decided to make him pay a heavy price for breaking her heart and cheating on her. Susan acted like it was no big deal what he said or done to her. She said in a calm voice even though she didn't mean it, "It's okay, darling, I love you anyway." Bill replied, "Are you crazy, if someone did what I've done to you, I would want them dead." "I can't help it, I'm crazy in love with you," replied Susan. She asked Bill, "Would you like another beer?" Bill replied, "You bet." Susan went and got her cheating husband a beer out of the refrigerator, but instead of rushing back to him with a beer in hand, she decided to pour sleeping powder in his beer and plan the hell that would be brought upon him when he awoke from his deep sleep. Susan handed him his beer and he gulped it down, within minutes he was out like a light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few American entertainers have had the explosive impact, wide-ranging appeal, and continuing popularity of country music star Hank Williams. Such Williams standards as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Jambalaya," and "I Saw the Light" have all entered the pantheon of great American song. Roger Williams recounts the story of Hank's rise from impoverished Southern roots, his coming of age during and after World War II, his meteoric climb to national acclaim and star status on the Grand Ole Opry, his chronic bouts with alcoholism and the alienation it created in those he loved and sang for, and finally his tragic death at twenty-nine and subsequent emergence as a folk hero. The book also features a thorough discography compiled by Bob Pinson of the Country Music Foundation.

Download or read book An Outlaw and a Lady written by Jessi Colter and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned songwriter, singer, and wife of Waylon Jennings writes an intimate, enormously entertaining memoir of American music, of life with Waylon and the Outlaws, and of faith lost and found. The daughter of a Pentecostal evangelist and a race-car driver, Jessi Colter played piano and sang in church before leaving Arizona to tour with rock-n-roll pioneer Duane Eddy, whom she married. Colter became a successful recording artist, appearing on American Bandstand and befriending stars such as the Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins, while her songs were recorded by Nancy Sinatra, Dottie West, and others. Her marriage to Eddy didn’t last, however, and in 1969 she married the electrifying Waylon Jennings. Together, they made their home in Nashville which, in the 1970s, was ground zero for roots music, drawing Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Shel Silverstein, and others to the Nashville Sound. And Jessi was at the center of it all, the only woman on the landmark Wanted: The Outlaws album, therecord that launched the Outlaw Country genre and was the first country album to go platinum. She also tasted personal commercial success with the #1-single “I’m Not Lisa.” But offstage, life was a challenge, as Waylon pursued his addictions and battled his demons. Having drifted from the church as a young woman, Jessi returned to her faith and found in it a source of strength in the turmoil of living with Waylon. In the 1980s, Waylon helped launch the super group The Highwaymen with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, and the hits kept rolling, as did Waylon’s reckless living. Amid it all, Jessi faithfully prayed for her husband until finally, at Thanksgiving 2001, Waylon found Jesus, just months before he died. An Outlaw and a Lady is a powerful story of American music, of love in the midst of heartache, and of faith that sustains.

Download or read book The Hank Williams Reader written by Patrick Huber and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Hank Williams died on New Year's Day 1953 at the age of twenty-nine, his passing appeared to bring an abrupt end to a saga of rags-to-riches success and anguished self-destruction. As it turned out, however, an equally gripping story was only just beginning, as Williams's meteoric rise to stardom, extraordinary musical achievements, turbulent personal life, and mysterious death all combined to make him an endlessly intriguing historical figure. For more than sixty years, an ever-lengthening parade of journalists, family and friends, musical contemporaries, biographers, historians and scholars, ordinary fans, and novelists have attempted to capture in words the man, the artist, and the legend. The Hank Williams Reader, the first book of its kind devoted to this giant of American music, collects more than sixty of the most compelling, insightful, and historically significant of these writings. Among them are many pieces that have never been reprinted or that are published here for the first time. The selections cover a broad assortment of themes and perspectives, ranging from heartfelt reminiscences by Williams's relatives and shocking tabloid exposés to thoughtful meditations by fellow artists and penetrating essays by prominent scholars and critics. Over time, writers have sought to explain Williams in a variety of ways, and in tracing these shifting interpretations, this anthology chronicles his cultural transfiguration from star-crossed hillbilly singer-songwriter to enduring American icon. The Hank Williams Reader also features a lengthy interpretive introduction and the most extensive bibliography of Williams-related writings ever published.
Download or read book I Saw the Light written by William MacEwen and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that inspired the major motion picture I Saw the Light. In his brief life, Hank Williams created one of the defining bodies of American music. Songs such as "Your Cheatin' Heart," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "Jambalaya" sold millions of records and became the model for virtually all country music that followed. But by the time of his death at age twenty-nine, Williams had drunk and drugged and philandered his way through two messy marriages and out of his headline spot on the Grand Ole Opry. Even though he was country music's top seller, toward the end he was so famously unreliable that he was lucky to get a booking in a beer hall. Colin Escott's enthralling, definitive biograph -- now the basis of the major motion picture I Saw the Light -- vividly details the singer's stunning rise and his spectacular decline, revealing much that was previously unknown or hidden about the life of this country music legend. Originally published as Hank William: The Biography.

Download or read book Hank Hung the Moon and Warmed Our Cold Cold Hearts written by Rheta Grimsley Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the first country music superstar, the late Hank Williams has been written about in many books. What makes this little volume special is its original approach. Johnson (Enchanted Evening Barbie and the Second Coming: A Memoir), a native of the American South and a reporter and columnist for Southern newspapers for over 30 years, doesn't try to recap the artist's life; rather, she presents several essays on how the music and the legend affected her life. In one especially engaging chapter, she discusses interviewing and getting to know Williams's lone, illegitimate daughter, Jett Williams. Verdict This very readable book paints many vivid pictures of life in Alabama and other Southern states in the 1940s-60s. Thus, it brings to life the time and the place through the prism of the poetry and storytelling of one of the South's authentic heroes.
