Similarly, Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa underscores the need for a society to place the needs of its children at the highest rung of its priority. He argued that "there can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children." In the same vein, children are inducted into the processes of society through the family. The family is, therefore, the most foundational institution; the center of the human society. When the family contains all standards and regularity of completeness, it is a pulsating structure that recreates and reproduces life. Strong families guarantee strong communities bound together by cultural principles, interpersonal bonds, shared history, interests and goals. Strong families transmit shared knowledge which enables the community to reproduce and sustain itself through its own children. Therefore, for a social group to exist through time it has to strengthen its concept of family. Furthermore, every society aims to inculcate social abilities and competencies that are essential for preparing young people for full responsibility in that society. The idea is to nurture, socialize and prepare them for the tasks ahead. Sensible people socialize their children using stories that carry their cultural values and historical memories. They seek to reproduce themselves in their children. They want their children to stand on their shoulders and be able to see beyond the horizons that they themselves were not able to see. They seek to pass on the button of social responsibility, continuity and dignity to their children, their future, in order to ensure that their humanity thrives forever. Reimagining the African American Family through African Cultural Values and Structures reengages and redefines modern day conversations about the family. It is a search for principles, models, examples from African culture that may be used in the reconstruction and restoration of African and African American families.

Book excerpt: The Cultural Matrix seeks to unravel a uniquely American paradox: the socioeconomic crisis, segregation, and social isolation of disadvantaged black youth, on the one hand, and their extraordinary integration and prominence in popular culture on the other. Despite school dropout rates over 40 percent, a third spending time in prison, chronic unemployment, and endemic violence, black youth are among the most vibrant creators of popular culture in the world. They also espouse several deeply-held American values. To understand this conundrum, the authors bring culture back to the forefront of explanation, while avoiding the theoretical errors of earlier culture-of-poverty approaches and the causal timidity and special pleading of more recent ones. There is no single black youth culture, but a complex matrix of cultures—adapted mainstream, African-American vernacular, street culture, and hip-hop—that support and undermine, enrich and impoverish young lives. Hip-hop, for example, has had an enormous influence, not always to the advantage of its creators. However, its muscular message of primal honor and sensual indulgence is not motivated by a desire for separatism but by an insistence on sharing in the mainstream culture of consumption, power, and wealth. This interdisciplinary work draws on all the social sciences, as well as social philosophy and ethnomusicology, in a concerted effort to explain how culture, interacting with structural and environmental forces, influences the performance and control of violence, aesthetic productions, educational and work outcomes, familial, gender, and sexual relations, and the complex moral life of black youth.

Book excerpt: Based on eleven months of field work (2009-2011), this book analyzes the situation of youth in urban Gulu, Northern Uganda, in the aftermath of the war between the Lord’s Resistance Army and the Ugandan Government (1986-2006). Specifically, it focuses on the generation that was born and grew up during the 20-year war: How do members of this generation perceive and evaluate socio-cultural changes which occurred in Acholi society throughout the war years? How do they imagine their future society? And how do they react to the expectations directed at them by their elders? In order to answer these questions, the book draws on rich ethnographic material. It provides an in-depth analysis of how imaginations of the post-war society are contested and negotiated between different groups of social actors – youth and elders, men and women as well as local, national and international actors. While some try to re-establish former cultural practices and conventions and call for a ‘retraditionalization’ of Acholi society, others lobby for ‘modernization’ and attempt to establish ‘new’ social structures, values and norms which are strongly influenced by local understandings of ‘the Western culture’. The book presents numerous examples of the multiple and complex ways young people strategically position themselves in these debates and make use of the various discourses on culture, tradition and modernity in their negotiations of generational, gender, family, and peer-to-peer relations.
