Download or read book Leonarde s Ghost written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008-04-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For seven weeks in late spring and early summer of 1628, a ghost haunted the modest dwelling of Huguette Roy and her husband in the small city of Dole in the Holy Roman Empire near the French border. Before and after giving birth to her third child, Huguette received visits twice daily from a young woman clothed in white who cleaned her house, eased her pains, and tended her newborn son. Only Huguette could see this apparition, and the haunting aroused curiosity and fear throughout her community. Soon after the spirit departed, a young man from Dole prepared a manuscript in colloquial French to recount Huguette’s experiences, the ghost’s demands, and the event’s orthodoxy. Translators Edwards and Sutch present this primary source in English to allow modern readers to view the spirituality, piety, and daily lives of ordinary people in early modern Europe. Tribble mines a journal and a trove of letters from the Special Collections and Archives of Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University to introduce a significant figure in North Carolina and Baptist history. The writings of Sally Merriam Wait reveal a northernborn woman with anti-slavery leanings engaging with an unfamiliar environment in the slave-holding South. Her ambition led her from young convert in revival-swept New England to devoted wife of Reverend Samuel Wait, the first president and founder of Wake Forest University. Wait's decisions are shaped by a surging evangelical movement, changes in the American economy, the rise of women's social agency, a fracturing of political traditions, and the moral conflicts inherent in a slave economy. The book provides a rare glimpse into the spiritual and worldly education of a young woman of faith at the dawn of market capitalism in Jacksonian America"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eugene Peterson maintains that how we read the Bible is as important as that we read it. The second volume of Peterson's momentous five-part work on spiritual theology, Eat This Book challenges us to read the Scriptures on their own terms, as God's revelation, and to live them as we read them. Countering the widespread practice of using the Bible for self-serving purposes, Peterson here serves readers with a nourishing entrée into the formative, life-changing art of spiritual reading." - from the back of the book.

Download or read book Filial Piety written by Charlotte Ikels and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have rapid industrial development and the aging of the population affected the expression of filial piety in East Asia? Eleven experienced fieldworkers take a fresh look at an old idea, analyzing contemporary behavior, not norms, among both rural and urban families in China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Each chapter presents rich ethnographic data on how filial piety shapes the decisions and daily lives of adult children and their elderly parents. The authors ability to speak the local languages and their long-term, direct contact with the villagers and city dwellers they studied lend an immediacy and authenticity lacking in more abstract treatments of the topic. This book is an ideal text for social science and humanities courses on East Asia because it focuses on shared cultural practices while analyzing the ways these practices vary with local circumstances of history, economics, social organization, and demography and with personal circumstances of income, gender, and family configuration.
