He's holed up in a hospital with both arms broken while many of his fellow soldiers are decimated in the bloody battle that takes place on D-Day at Omaha Beach. After recuperating, Jim is sent to the 30th Division-called Old Hickory-which has suffered its own losses in a devastating friendly fire incident. The athletic and fast-as-lightning nineteen-year-old tries to prove his worth on the battlefield and become accepted by his new regiment. Because of his skills and youth, the Old Hickory veterans decide he has earned the nickname of "Young Hickory." And in the midst of all the insanity, Jim finds love in the person of Lille-a delicate, beautiful Belgian girl working at a bakery in the town of Liege. But can love survive in the deepening conflict? Or will it be challenged by the harsh realities of war? This is Jim Farrell's story-his accomplishments and his failures. His transgressions and his redemption. It is also the story of Dave, Stak, Al, Z, Wally-and the rest of Jim's Old Hickory brothers-in-arms-as they fight to survive the Battle of the Bulge in the brutal, final days of WWII. .JIM FARRELL, a lanky young soldier from Virginia, is injured in a practice run just before his division is set to land at Omaha Beach. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 1034 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Library of America inaugurates its edition of the complete fiction of one of America's most beloved living writers For more than fifty years, in eight novels and fortytwo short stories, Wendell Berry (b. 1934) has created an indelible portrait of rural America through the lens of Port William, Kentucky, one of the most fully imagined places in American literature. Taken together, these novels and stories form a masterwork of American prose: straightforward, spare, and lyrical. Now, for the first time, in an edition prepared in consultation with the author, Library of America is presenting the complete story of Port William in the order of narrative chronology. This first volume, which spans from the Civil War to World War II, gathers the novels Nathan Coulter (1960, revised 1985), A Place on Earth (1967, revised 1983), A World Lost (1996), and Andy Catlett: Early Travels (2006), along with twenty-three short stories, among them such favorites as “Watch With Me,” “Thicker than Liquor,” and “A Desirable Woman.” It also features a newly researched chronology of Berry’s life and career, a map and a Port William Membership family tree, and helpful notes. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book excerpt: The best U.S. division at war, from Normandy to the Bulge and beyond The 30th Infantry Division, drawn from the hill country of Tennessee and the Carolinas, was regarded during World War II as the cream of the crop of U.S. fighting units. The Germans agreed, calling the division “Roosevelt’s SS” for its tenacity and skill. The 30th fought in Normandy, along the Siegfried Line (where it conducted “the perfect infantry attack”), at the Battle of the Bulge, and in the final operations inside Germany. Baumer relies on primary sources to tell the story of this remarkable unit and its men in what is sure to become a classic World War II division history.

Book Young Adult Science Fiction

Download or read book Young Adult Science Fiction written by C. W. Sullivan III and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-03-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the close of the nineteenth century, American youths developed a growing interest in electricity and its applications, machines, and gadgetry. When authors and publishers recognized the extent of this interest in technology, they sought to create reading materials that would meet this market need. The result was science fiction written especially for young adults. While critics tended to neglect young adult science fiction for decades, they gradually came to recognize its practical and cultural value. Science fiction inspired many young adults to study science and engineering and helped foster technological innovation. At the same time, these works also explored cultural and social concerns more commonly associated with serious literature. Nor was young adult science fiction a peculiarly American phenomenon: authors in other countries likewise wrote science fiction for young adult readers. This book examines young adult science fiction in the U.S. and several other countries and explores issues central to the genre. The first part of the book treats the larger contexts of young adult science fiction and includes chapters on its history and development. Included are discussions of science fiction for young adults in the U.S. and in Canada, Great Britain, Germany, and Australia. These chapters are written by expert contributors and chart the history of young adult science fiction from the nineteenth century to the present. The second section of the book considers topics of special interest to young adult science fiction. Some of the chapters look at particular forms and expressions of science fiction, such as films and comic books. Others treat particular topics, such as the portrayal of women in Robert Heinlein's works and representations of war in young adult science fiction. Yet another chapter studies the young adult science fiction novel as a coming-of-age story and thus helps distinguish the genre from science fiction written for adult readers. All chapters reflect current research, and the volume concludes with extensive bibliographies.

Book Polk

  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Polk written by Walter R. Borneman and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-04-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Polk, Walter R. Borneman gives us the first complete and authoritative biography of a president often overshadowed in image but seldom outdone in accomplishment. James K. Polk occupied the White House for only four years, from 1845 to 1849, but he plotted and attained a formidable agenda: He fought for and won tariff reductions, reestablished an independent Treasury, and, most notably, brought Texas into the Union, bluffed Great Britain out of the lion’s share of Oregon, and wrested California and much of the Southwest from Mexico. On reflection, these successes seem even more impressive, given the contentious political environment of the time. In this unprecedented, long-overdue warts-and-all look at Polk’s life and career, we have a portrait of an expansionist president and decisive statesman who redefined the country he led, and we are reminded anew of the true meaning of presidential accomplishment and resolve.

When one of the town’s golden girls dies in a terrible accident, everyone holds Tess responsible. But Henry keeps his secrets even closer now, though it seems that everyone knows something about him that Tess does not. When a sudden polio epidemic strikes Hickory, the townspeople band together to build a polio hospital. Tess knows she is needed and defies Henry’s wishes to begin working at there. Despite hardship and tragedy through the generations, the Reilly family remains united, loving, and ever hopeful that with a solid commitment to education, they can achieve-and help others achieve-a happier, fuller, and more liberated life. Book James K Polk

Download or read book James K Polk written by John Seigenthaler and published by Times Books. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of a pivotal president who watched over our westward expansion and solidified the dream of Jacksonian democracy James K. Polk was a shrewd and decisive commander in chief, the youngest president elected to guide the still-young nation, who served as Speaker of the House and governor of Tennessee before taking office in 1845. Considered a natural successor to Andrew Jackson, "Young Hickory" miraculously revived his floundering political career by riding a wave of public sentiment in favor of annexing the Republic of Texas to the Union. Shortly after his inauguration, he settled the disputed Oregon boundary and by 1846 had declared war on Mexico in hopes of annexing California. The considerably smaller American army never lost a battle. At home, however, Polk suffered a political firestorm of antiwar attacks from many fronts. Despite his tremendous accomplishments, he left office an extremely unpopular man, on whom stress had taken such a physical toll that he died within three months of departing Washington. Fellow Tennessean John Seigenthaler traces the life of this president who, as Truman noted, "said what he intended to do and did it."
