The author drew upon the early Puritan influences that played a major role in the country's history and exploited them through mystery, creativity, science, and witchcraft. Hawthorne wrote with a psychological view of his characters and their motivations, allowing him to craft characters, plots, and scenes that truly represent his story's themes. His use of foreshadowing and symbolism are second to none. Each work is an intricate puzzle that fits together delicately. Though his works are not considered "easy," Hawthorne's writing style captures the early American vernacular and phrasing; his pieces are commonly referred to as the perfect specimens of 18th and 19th century American language. The collection "Young Goodman Brown and Other Short Stories" offers seven tales created by Hawthorne; each is different from the rest, making this anthology a varied and holistic collection for any library. Students who enjoyed Hawthorne's most famous novel "The Scarlet Letter" will be impressed with tales such as "Young Goodman Brown," "The Birthmark," and "The Artist of the Beautiful." The author's ability to connect Romanticism, theology, and morality has impressed readers since the 1800s, and audiences today will find the same excitement and beauty that was celebrated by 19th century Americans. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Set in Puritan Salem, Massachusetts, “Young Goodman Brown” reflects author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s perspective on this dark period of American history. Hawthorne was widely known for his common use of seventeenth-century Salem as a setting for his stories, which allegorically criticize Puritan values as contradictory. Book Selected Tales and Sketches

Download or read book Selected Tales and Sketches written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1987-03-03 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short fiction of a writer who helped to shape the course of American literature. With a determined commitment to the history of his native land, Nathaniel Hawthorne revealed, more incisively than any writer of his generation, the nature of a distinctly American consciousness. The pieces collected here deal with essentially American matters: the Puritan past, the Indians, the Revolution. But Hawthorne was highly - often wickedly - unorthodox in his account of life in early America, and his precisely constructed plots quickly engage the reader's imagination. Written in the 1820s, 30s, and 40s, these works are informed by themes that reappear in Hawthorne's longer works: The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance. And, as Michael J. Colacurcio points out in his excellent introduction, they are themes that are now deeply embedded in the American literary tradition.

The passages from Sketches from Memory show that Hawthorne had visited the mountains in one of his occasional rambles from home, but there are no entries in his Note Books which give accounts of such a visit. There is, however, among these notes the following interesting paragraph, written in 1840 and clearly foreshadowing The Great Stone Face: 'The semblance of a human face to be formed on the side of a mountain, or in the fracture of a small stone, by a lusus naturae [freak of nature]. The face is an object of curiosity for years or centuries, and by and by a boy is born whose features gradually assume the aspect of that portrait. At some critical juncture the resemblance is found to be perfect. A prophecy may be connected.'
