These books are designed either to take the place of formal instruction in geography in the lower classes, or to serve as supplementary reading matter in connection with such instruction. They are simple in language, and being in narrative form are well suited for use as Geographical Readers in school; While the matter and style are believed to be sufficiently attractive to make them interesting as home reading. In either case they will serve to diminish the necessity for formal geographical teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Download or read book A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man written by James Joyce and published by Modernista. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [1916] established James Joyce as a leading figure in literary modernism across Europe. The novel is set in the author’s homeland, Ireland, and narrates, in five episodes, the childhood of Stephen Dedalus. The plot is entirely based on Joyce’s own life and serves as a private manifesto, particularly through its sharp declaration of independence from Catholicism. Joyce pioneered a new way of writing novels, abandoning traditional narration for stream of consciousness and introducing his epiphanies—momentary revelations that, in their everydayness, hint at a larger context of life. Upon the recommendation of the American poet Ezra Pound, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was serialized in the magazine The Egoist in 1914/15 before being published as a book the following year. Today, more than a hundred years after its release, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is considered one of the most significant autobiographical texts in world literature. The Modern Library ranked it as the 3rd best English-language novel of the 20th century (with Joyce’s Ulysses as #1). JAMES JOYCE [1882-1941], Irish author, is a key figure in modernist literature with works such as Dubliners [1914], A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [1916], and Ulysses [1922].

What pleasure to a child to read the experiences of Caesar as he daily described them amidst all the duties and dangers of his campaigns, or to read in his own words of the perplexity of Columbus when first he noted the deflection of the magnetic needle in his com pass. It is even a pleasure to read how men like Layard and Schliemann have dug in the earth among ruins of past empire to add to the world's information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Folks' Library: Selection From the Choicest Literature of All Lands Legends are like the vines and tendrils that grow up about a tree. These sometimes hide its strength and cause its death, but they also lend to it a great and varied charm of color and outline. So Legends some times take the place of the real facts of history, but usually only add to them some touch of pathos or ten der human interest. To - day trained judgment has pruned away many old Legends from the great trunk of history. In this cleansing process, however, we have learned that Legends, like Myths, have their uses; that they are often symbols of deep truths that were once known to all, but in tme became changed into new shapes, often through ignorance and bad passions of the heart and mind.
