Do present-day children spend their leisure time mainly with peers at the expense of spending time with their parents? Book Youth and Leisure

Download or read book Youth and Leisure written by Kenneth Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1983. In the 1980s, as they are today, young people were remaining longer in education, and were leaving better qualified, if only to face unemployment rather than real jobs and progressive careers. Traditional gender divisions and roles are being challenged. In this study, Kenneth Roberts uses evidence from youth and leisure research to examine the ways that young people were responding to these trends. His book combines theories of adolescence, of the role and growth of leisure, and of the sources and consequences of post-war youth cultures. Roberts stresses and explains the persistence of class and gender divisions through trends in clothing, music and hair artistry, and predicts that these patterns will survive changes. He explains why, even during the era of affluent young workers, the freedom of adolescence remained superficial, for most young people at least. The majority had never been granted any real alternative to using their ‘free’ time and money to embrace traditional class and gender roles. Contrary to popular reputations, Youth and Leisure argues that, on balance, youth cultures exercised a conservative influence and that the more radical styles are nurtured by middle- and not working-class youths. The analysis has policy implications which are drawn together in the final chapter. Practitioners are advised to recognise that youth and leisure services cannot override divisions and tastes grounded in the wider social structure, but this does not mean that these interventions must be ineffective. Roberts explains how leisure education and provision can modify broader patterns and enable all young people to explore the leisure opportunities their circumstances allow.

Download or read book Positive Leisure Science written by Teresa Freire and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-15 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book extends positive psychology by embedding leisure into the positive science field, following a new paradigm and aggregating various domains and fields. Positive science can be applied to the field of leisure and, in turn, leisure can serve as an arena to study some of the most important optimal functioning variables. The book presents knowledge on a diverse range of topics about optimizing socio-cognitive processes and behaviors, places and contexts, societies and cultures through leisure. These topics are unified by an underlying continuum that extends from individuals and subjective experiences to social worlds. The contributions highlight components of everyday life, showing that subjective experience and life trajectories are structured and social goals and life purposes are defined and achieved within interactions between individuals and their lived contexts and environments in daily life. .

Download or read book Illegal Leisure written by Judith Aldridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illegal Leisure offers a unique insight into the role drug use now plays in British youth culture. The authors present the results of a five year longitudinal study into young people and drug taking. They argue that drugs are no longer used as a form of rebellious behaviour, but have been subsumed into wider, acceptable leisure activities. The new generation of drug user can no longer be seen as mad or bad or from subcultural worlds - they are ordinary and everywhere. Illustrated throughout with interview material, Illegal Leisure shows how drug consumption has become normalised, and provides a well-informed analysis of the current debate.

Book Young People and Leisure

Download or read book Young People and Leisure written by John Leigh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship which exists between the education services and the leisure time of the people they attempt to serve. The author explores education and provision for leisure and the problems of schools, youth services and adult education in relation to this. The case study of the leisure lives of young adults in a small industrial village provides some illustration of the difficulties of providing for leisure in non-urban areas. This title will be of great interest to policy-makers and to students of Sociology and Leisure Studies.

Book Illegal Leisure Revisited

Download or read book Illegal Leisure Revisited written by Judith Aldridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book updates the progress into adulthood of the cohort of fourteen-year-olds who were recruited and tracked until they were eighteen years old. Illegal Leisure (1998) described their adolescent journeys and lifestyles, focusing on their early regular drinking and extensive ‘recreational’ drug use. This new edition revisits these original chapters, providing commentaries around them to discuss current implications of the original publication, plus documenting and discussing the group at twenty-two and twenty-seven years of age. Illegal Leisure Revisited positions the journeys of these twenty-somethings against the ever-changing backdrop of a consumption-oriented leisure society, the rapid expansion of the British night-time economy and the place of substance use in contemporary social worlds. It presents to the reader the ways in which these young people have moved into the world of work, long-term relationships and parenthood, and the resulting changes in the function and frequency of their drinking and drug-use patterns. Amid dire public health warnings about their favourite intoxicants, and with the growing criminalisation of a widening array of recreational drugs, the book revisits these young people as they continue as archetypal citizens in a risk society. The book is ideal reading for researchers and undergraduate students from a variety of fields, such as developmental and social psychology, sociology, criminology, cultural and health studies. Professionals working in criminal justice, health promotion, drugs education, harm reduction and treatment will also find this book an invaluable resource.

Book Examining Adolescent Leisure Time Across Cultures Developmental Opportunities and Risks

Download or read book Examining Adolescent Leisure Time Across Cultures Developmental Opportunities and Risks written by Suman Verma and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2003-04-21 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To gain deeper insight into the developmental opportunities and risks that adolescents experience in their free time, this volume explores adolescents' daily leisure experience across countries. Each chapter describes the sociocultural contexts in which adolescents live, along with a profile of free-time activities. Collectively, the chapters highlight the differences and similarities between cultures; how family, peers, and wider social factors influence the use of free time; which societies provide more freedom and at what costs; and how adolescents cope with restricted degrees of freedom and with what consequences on their mental health and well-being. Adolescence worldwide is a life period of role restructuring and social learning. Free-time activities provide opportunities to experiment with roles and develop new adaptive strategies and other interpersonal skills that have an impact on development, socialization, and the transition to adulthood. Leisure provides a rich context in which adolescents can gain control over their attentional processes and learn from relationships with peers, but it also has potential costs, such as involvement in deviant and risk behaviors. This volume is a valuable contribution to the research and discussion of this critical topic. This is the 99th volume in the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development.
