Book Son of a Preacher Man

Download or read book Son of a Preacher Man written by Jay Bakker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2001-12-24 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Son of a Preacher Man Jay Bakker, son of famous televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, tells the compelling story of growing up in the glaring lights of a television studio. It's all here: the Bakker family's public disgrace, the fall of the PTL (Praise The Lord) media empire, and Bakker's subsequent plunge into a morass of anxiety and selfdestruction. But Son of a Preacher Man is more than a tell-all -- it is a story that dramatizes the human toll of this tragedy on the Bakker family, with insight into the seismic shifts that nearly destroyed his father and wrecked his parents' longtime marriage. It is the story of a prodigal son's return to the true meaning of God's love and acceptance. It is the story of a boy who was lost, but on the journey back from ruin finds a better way to understand and live life. It is the story of discovering God's grace and of becoming a man. Despite years of disillusionment, alcoholism, and heartbreak, Bakker managed to continue on his spiritual quest. First he worked to redeem his father...then his faith. Bakker began his service with Revolution, a ministry for skateboarders, punk rockers, and hippiesthe street kids he knew best. He shared the message that saved his life -- the message of Jesus that God's love is infinitely generous. Now Bakker has a large and growing ministry among the tattooed and pierced of downtown Atlanta who feel rejected by the traditional Church yet flock to hear his message of grace and love. Ultimately, Son of a Preacher Man is a story about resurrection -- of one lost young man, of his disgraced and imprisoned father, and of the hope that can't be destroyed by the machinations of power-hungry preachers, The long, lonely road that Bakker traveled taught him that you can't earn or make yourself worthy of the love of God, but if you are willing to let go and open up, that infinite love is waiting to welcome you home with open arms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A person who is a preacher is a person people look up to because that person represents God. The story that you are about to read is about Reverend Solomon Jack, his wife Romania, and their three sons Peter, Johnny, and David. I tagged them the miserable, the humble, and the terrible. Peter the miserable because he never listened to his parents. They always had to bail him out of trouble. The day he left to join the army, his parents were so happy because he was a bad influence on Johnny. David the humble because he was the youngest, but he never gave his parents any trouble. He was the youngest, but he never gave his parents any problems. It seemed like they did not pay much attention to him. But being the youngest, everyone loved him. Johnny I call the terrible because he gave his parents the most trouble. But in spite of his bad habits, his mother loved him to death. He could do no wrong in her eyes, not only to his mother but also to everyone who loved Johnny. He was just that type of person. He caused his father to lose his church and he caused his mother's death. What is so amazing is that Jesus died to save us from our sins, but it took Romania's death for Johnny to give his heart to Christ. Romania was a praying woman. She prayed for her sons' night and day. I know that she will be happy when her sons join her in heaven.

Book excerpt: In October of 1962, one month after desegregation in the Florida Panhandle, eighteen-year-old Jennifer Sheehan's life was forever changed, when her mother and twin brother were murdered, apparently in retaliation for her mother's Civil Rights activism. Fearing for her granddaughter's life, Jennifer's grandmother sent her to live in New Orleans. Jennifer survived, but only by leaving behind her family, her best friend, and Daniel, her fiancé. Now, in the summer of 1973, Jennifer is the first female police officer in her small hometown of Dismal, FL. Most of her fellow officers wish she'd never come home, and those officers include her former fiancé, Daniel. He's still angry with Jen for disappearing from his life but, for Jen, returning to Dismal has meant returning to a love she'd thought she'd outgrown. One of the men who killed her mother and brother was shot dead as he attempted to kill both Jen and Daniel. The other remains a mystery, though it's becoming clear that he is someone very close to Jennifer's family. Meanwhile, a small group of Vietnam vets has come to town, and with them, a string of violent incidents. As Jen and Daniel work to determine whether the vets are victims or perpetrators, they also try to discover who in her small circle murdered her family, before that person decides to finish what they started a decade before. Son of a Preacher Man is the second book in a two-book story arc about the murders of Jen's mother and brother. All subsequent books can be read as standalone novels. Book excerpt: 52 fictionalized episodes with men. “Simple and ingenious . . . gets at the truth of how we experience, perceive, and remember romantic encounters.” —Los Angeles Review of Books From a writer who master poet Seamus Heaney described as one “who risks much both stylistically and emotionally” comes 52 Men. Taut, spare and highly compressed autobiographical fiction for the mobile age, it is immensely funny and sexually charged. In contemporary literary miniatures from a few lines to a few pages, Manhattan-raised Elise McKnight describes the men in her life who gradually reveal her: high-profile cultural leaders, writers and celebrities, as well as the down-to-earth waiter, student and police officer. Fifty-two strange, romantic and sexual interludes and relationships spark to life and disappear in the wind, leaving the reader always asking: What is Elise’s power? What does she want and will she ever get it? Does she have a secret and if so, what is it? With surprising, sometimes shocking and moving cameos by figures from tabloids and the news: Jay Carney, Jonathan Franzen, Lou Reed, Michael Stipe; and encounters with artists, financiers, and a boxer who reads Neruda at the Turkish baths. “I’m not sure I’ve ever read a story of a life that’s both so moving and told with such breathtaking economy and precision. 52 Men gave me goose bumps again and again.” —Kurt Andersen, New York Times–bestselling author of Evil Geniuses “A haunting and haunted book . . . harsh and sweet and very funny, in spots as hard to read as it is hard to put down.” —Will Eno, playwright and author of Thom Pain (based on nothing)

Book All Things to All People Confessions of a Rebellious Preacher s Son

This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Things to All People is an introverted narrative penned by the son of a Gospel preacher and his alter ego, Begees McFree. This playfully written autobiography of a simple, quiet, and peaceable man guides the reader through depression-induced insomniac confessions. Looking deep into the often-hidden places of the heart and mind, these confessions freed the writer from lies and misunderstandings that had been buried deep within. All Things to All People shares the spiritual struggle of a man after a divorce broke apart his life and separated him from his children. Begees uses freewriting to disentangle his poor choices from his good intentions, gaining more selfcontrol and growing closer to God while strenuously pushing unbelief out of his mind.
