Book My Old Man

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amy Sohn
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2004-09-08
  • ISBN : 0743271661
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book My Old Man written by Amy Sohn and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-09-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author and one of the city's most provocative columnists comes a hip, contemporary novel about love, lust, and living in the same neighborhood as your parents. When twenty-six-year-old Rachel Block started rabbinical school, she didn't think she'd be dropping out after a semester and a half. But when a sick man dies under her counseling, she realizes she's not cut out for the rabbinate. To make ends meet, she takes a job as a bartender in Cobble Hill, her Brooklyn neighborhood -- much to her parents' chagrin. Until now Rachel has always been the perfect daughter, getting straight A's and dating nice Jewish boys. Now she's fending off come-ons from sleazy guys and trying to remember the ingredients in a Metropolitan. It's the quintessential quarter-life crisis, compounded by the fact that she's still living just blocks from her childhood home. To make matters worse, she's having trouble sleeping -- she can barely get through the night without being awakened by the amorous noises of her sexy friend and upstairs neighbor, Liz Kaminsky. Then Rachel falls in love with Hank Powell, an iconoclastic screenwriter twice her age (and a Gentile!) and finds herself acting more and more like Liz. Suddenly she's reassessing her values, her surroundings, and everything she's ever believed about the "right" kind of relationship. She begins dressing up in outrageous outfits for midday trysts, while hiding the dirty details from a newly modest Liz. Meanwhile, her interactions with her father, with whom she's always been close, have become increasingly strange. Is he distraught that she's dropped out of school? Is he having his own (midlife) crisis? Or is he upset over her mother's newfound independence, now that she's entered menopause and discovered the joys of a book group? Something's up...and Rachel's increasingly convinced it might be her father's libido. With Rachel's own relationship getting wilder and weirder and her parents acting like teenagers, it seems that everyone in Cobble Hill is going crazy. A fresh spin on Philip Roth's Portnoy's Complaint, My Old Man is a sexy comedy about a dysfunctional Brooklyn family coming apart at the seams.

Book I Used To Be Somebody

  • ISBN : 1475011083
  • Pages : 99 pages

Download or read book I Used To Be Somebody written by Ed Uravic and published by Ed Uravic. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I don't know why, but for some reason people find my one-two boilermaker punch of Kerouac and Hawkeye Pierce somewhat amusing. I'm a real prize. I lost my glamorous job as a professional drinker, I mean Washington lobbyist, after I won the war but lost the battle with a Lying Cheating Scum. The Wife kicked me to the curb, down the street and all the way out of town. Now I'm back in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the Bedford Falls I thought I had escaped. Just to prove I lost my mind, I go and fall for some sob story about a kid with leukemia and her family going broke, from a peaches and cream siren who distracted me with her allure. So I'm up against the biggest players with the deepest pockets, I don't have any plastic, and I'm not even getting paid. How am I supposed to buy people? Here's the thing: I kind of like the little girl, Rosa, held hostage by a bunch of greedy insurance industry bean counters. She's a fighter. And I hate it when my friends get jerked around by The Man. The players in this little drama will tell you they're not to blame. That it's not personal, it's just business. Look, I'm just a guy with a winning smile and a fabulous wardrobe, but I don't buy it. For me, it's always personal. I may not have a perfect record or always play by the rules, but when I'm in, I'm all the way in. And I'm not joking around anymore.

Book The Odd Patients

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Box
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2020-05-12
  • ISBN : 1984592645
  • Pages : 134 pages

Download or read book The Odd Patients written by Stephen Box and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Odd Patients was written as a short novel during a 7-day course of antibiotics required immediately prior to heart valve surgery, only being revisited to inject actual experiences during those first 48-hours post-op. Having been alerted to the prospect of a one-in-three chance of not surviving surgery I needed a positive focus to steer me through this prospect, with survival at its core. Alternatively, should I fail to survive, I needed to plot where I was with each of the books mentioned, The Way, Blind Ambition Has A Price, and Prejudice In Love, to help my family to complete them having spent some four years developing the ideas presented. Thankfully my surgery erred on the side of success allowing me to finish them myself. Each is a labour of love dealing with real social issues in today’s world. Having to come to terms with the reality that my career as a senior banker was to be essentially truncated at 57-years old because of health issues, writing books and my blog (www.univest.blog) based on my years of global experience helped to fill my downtime. Each time I thought I could return to my love of international project finance for developing economies I was quickly thwarted by another health issue, including cancer. I am a bear with a sore head when down so there are many people I could acknowledge for their support. Within all my books the primary characters are based on real people or an amalgam thereof, who I know, or have known over the years most of which are truly exceptional people, and a privilege to have met. There are cameo roles for people who had a profound effect on my life. And the events and encounters are all based on real experiences over the years. In this book Roz is based on a real ‘Roz’ I knew in the mid-1980’s. I had a dream just months before my surgery in which I met her, quite by chance, on the streets of London. Why I had this dream, I don’t know, but I remember those days with fondness, and hope she found the happiness she so deserves. Andrea is the amalgam of a magazine editor I know, and a woman who left her education at a private girl’s school confused about who she was, using self-arm as a statement of her frustration. It took her until she was 30-years old to find herself. Even the lovely Avanka was the wonderful head of catering for a previous hospital stay. And Siobhan was reined back using the name of Brünhilde (as in Wagner’s Die Walküre) when she over asserted her matronly ‘charm’.
