Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I don’t think I will find a book I love more this year.” —Jane Green, New York Times bestselling author “Funny, poignant, joyous, explosive, but most of all affirming of our connections to one another. You Only Call When You're in Trouble is a book to cherish. A book that loves you back. What more could you want, my gosh? Read it!” —Andrew Sean Greer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less Is Lost Is it ever okay to stop caring for others and start living for yourself? After a lifetime of taking care of his impossible but irresistible sister and his cherished niece, Tom is ready to put himself first. An architect specializing in tiny houses, he finally has an opportunity to build his masterpiece—“his last shot at leaving a footprint on the dying planet.” Assuming, that is, he can stick to his resolution to keep the demands of his needy family at bay. Naturally, that’s when his phone rings. His niece, Cecily—the real love of Tom’s life, as his boyfriend reminded him when moving out—is embroiled in a Title IX investigation at the college where she teaches that threatens her career and relationship. And after decades of lying, his sister wants him to help her tell Cecily the real identity of her father. Tom does what he’s always done—answers the call. Thus begins a journey that will change everyone’s life and demonstrate the beauty or dysfunction (or both?) of the ties that bind families together and sometimes strangle them. Warm, funny, and deeply moving, You Only Call When You’re in Trouble is an unforgettable showcase for Stephen McCauley’s distinctive voice and unique ability to create complex characters that jump off the page and straight into your heart.

At that point, he’ll turn eighteen and all his problems will go away (so he thinks). But it will take more than just reaching a date on a calendar. Mark carries around a checkered past, has never known a stable home life, and believes all his problems originate from the neighboring golf course. He feels the odds are stacked against him and nobody is willing to give him a chance. A probation officer provides some routine counseling, but Mark is often leery of him and the process. It is at the least-likeliest of places, on the links, working with a most-improbable ally, a visually-impaired golfer, that Mark finds encouragement and catches glimpses of a better path through life.

Book excerpt: I was born on May 15, 1922, in Pasadena California, Our gracious God having endowed me with gifts and talents. On my knees at Mother's Knees, I met Jesus at age 3. As a natural singer, I was soloing in Church by age 5, in quartets, on Radio and a bass lead with an Opera Company (La Traviata, etc)by age 17. and by age 23 was a Flight Engineer in the Army Air Corps, and had written a couple of Poems. By age 75, I had been a Machinist 25 years, was proficient at the Piano, Organ, had taken an Accordian on a West Africa Missionary Tour, and had written several more Poems, both humorous and Spiritual, sired four girls and a boy. We had moved 650 miles North, and In a new Church I showed a Bible teacher my poems. He persuaded me to start writing poetry seriously, to be posted on his Web Site. Having the gift of the Holy Spirit, Under His anointing, I wrote Poetry, only as the Holy Spirit gave it. The teacher became my best friend, and we ministered in Rest Homes together, and He was a tremendous influence in my life. My Son-in-law, a very staunch supporter of my poetry.was putting the poems in a note book. My wife passsed away and my new Pastor, who had previosly been a Graphics Artist, said that if I would put them in a book, he'd create the cover. By January, 2008, I had written 260 Holy Spirit inspired Poems for a book, and one for the reader.

Book Children in Danger

Download or read book Children in Danger written by Jean Renvoize and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-09 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s ‘baby battering’ accounted for an estimated 700 child deaths a year in Britain, while a further 4-5,000 children were seriously injured – all this in spite of the knowledge gained from the research done both in Britain and in the United States. How could such tragedies be prevented? What is known about the parents, the family patterns and social situations that gave rise to baby battering? Extraordinary public interest had been aroused by the appalling case of Maria Colwell, and the problem of baby battering was now receiving the close attention it had long warranted. Originally published in 1974, Jean Renvoize had spent two years interviewing the battering parents themselves, as well as social workers, doctors, the police and psychiatrists. The special virtue of Children in Danger was that, apart from being the first fully-researched book on the subject, the author was able to look at baby battering as an outsider, seeing the picture as a whole. Her overwhelming impression is that although lip-service was paid to the idea of cooperation between all professionals working in the field, the truth was that too frequently a deep distrust existed between them, particularly between social workers and the police. The result of this distrust was that every year thousands of children fell through the social welfare net with tragic results. Jean Renvoize discusses frankly and impartially the ways the various professions regard each other, and she makes constructive suggestions for the future. The taped stories of several battering parents, which illustrate how narrow the line is between necessary discipline and near-cruelty, between extreme exasperation and uncontrolled attack, are a moving and illuminating feature of the book. These parents talk not only about their lives and the events which led them towards actions they will never cease regretting, but also about their views of the help that was given them, or the lack of it. They are articulate and self-aware, and here for the first time their story is heard, along with the various professional explanations of why some people cannot stop themselves attacking the children whom they long to love.
