Book You can get There from Here

Download or read book You can get There from Here written by Paul LeBlanc and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forward Dear Paul M y friend Paul LeBlanc and I have had many wonderful adventures together over the years. I knew we were going to be friends when we first met on a film called "Silence of the North" in 1981. We were shooting in northern Canada in 40 degree temperatures. I had a scene where I had to run out of my cabin because a bear was on the roof, and shoot the bear. Paul and I were inside the cabin, just the two of us, waiting for my cue. When the bear went on the roof, the rafters of the cabin started sagging and the snow came pouring in. It looked like the roof was going to give way and the bear fall through and join us in the small cabin. We were terrified. At which point, Paul wailed, "Oh, please, I just wanted to be a hairdresser!" I laughed so hard I dropped my rifle. And what a hairdresser he is. He's always been my favorite, not just for his amazing artistry, which he demonstrated on me over and over again in many films, but most particularly in "Requiem for a Dream" in 2000. He's done my hair not only for films, but also for the Oscars, the Tonys, in Paris, in London, in limousines, in all temperatures and under every imaginable condition. But we've always had a great time together and he's always made me laugh, as I'm sure readers of his book will. Ellen Burstyn (2006)

Book How to Get There From Here

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover drawing, a depiction of a pomegranate tree that grows on the premises of the Garden Tomb in the old city of Jerusalem, was created by the author. According to J. E. Cirlot’s A Dictionary of Symbols, pomegranates, by nature of their shape and internal structure, symbolize the reconciliation of the multiple and diverse within apparent unity, and in the Bible appear as a symbol of the Oneness of the universe. Pomegranates were also embroidered on the hems of the Jewish priestly vestments prior to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple. And in the Hebrew scriptures, pomegranates were figured as tokens of fruitfulness even to the extent of being the Tree of Life itself and symbolic of the restoration of God’s favor.

Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

  • Author : Liên Shutt
  • Publisher : North Atlantic Books
  • Release : 2023-08-22
  • ISBN : 162317905X
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Home Is Here written by Liên Shutt and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to living the Engaged Four Noble Truths: antiracist practices for wholeness, healing, and collective liberation. For readers of Be the Refuge, The Way of Tenderness, Love and Rage, and Radical Dharma. Home is Here builds on foundational Buddhist teachings—the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path—offering an intersectional frame to help you embody antiracist practices and tend to your own healing under racism and oppression. Grounded in practice, memoir, and mindful self-help skill-building, Rev. Liên Shutt’s Engaged Four Noble Truths illuminate a path toward healing and liberation. She shares her own experiences with anti-Asian hate—as a teen riding her bike, meditating in whitewashed monasteries—and asks, what does it mean to attend to our suffering in body, heart, and mind when racism can cause such intense hurt and pain? What does it look like to heal? While written mainly for Asian American Buddhists and other BIPOC practitioners, Home is Here moves us all from knowing and contemplation to a place of action and wholeness. In the doing is the realization, and in practicing antiracism, we build a home for all beings. This is reflected in Rev. Shutt’s choice to frame each step of the Engaged Eightfold Path not as “right” but as “skillful”—to convey both the knowing and the practices essential to healing harm. In this way: Skillful view helps us understand and unpack the layers of our racial conditioning within systemic white supremacy. Skillful motivation allows us to understand our agency and align our actions with wholeness. Skillful effort guides us when working through difficult or triggering situations Skillful speech helps us communicate wholly truthfully, even (and especially) when navigating challenging conversations. An engaged reframing of core Buddhist spiritual principles, Home is Here connects foundational practices to urgent causes—and invites readers on a path home to wholeness.

Download or read book And Here written by Ronald Riekki and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Peninsula literature has traditionally been suppressed or minimized in Michigan anthologies and Michigan literature as a whole. Even the Upper Peninsula itself has been omitted from maps, creating a people and a place that have become in many ways “ungeographic.” These people and this place are strongly made up of traditionally marginalized groups such as the working class, the rural poor, and Native Americans, which adds even more insult to the exclusion and forced oppressive silence. And Here: 100 Years of Upper Peninsula Writing, 1917–2017, gives voice to Upper Peninsula writers, ensuring that they are included in Michigan’s rich literary history. Ambitiously, And Here includes great U.P. writing from every decade spanning from the 1910s to the 2010s, starting with Lew R. Sarett’s (a.k.a. Lone Caribou) “The Blue Duck: A Chippewa Medicine Dance” and ending with Margaret Noodin’s “Babejianjisemigad” and Sally Brunk’s “KBIC.” Taken as a whole, the anthology forcefully insists on the geographic and literary inclusion of the U.P.—on both the map and the page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Manning owned a good-size ranch outside of a small town in Virginia, and he was plowing one day close to his house. He was getting ready to plant a garden patch for the family to use for their livelihood. Three men came along the road. All three had sidearms and one man had a rifle. He shot Joe in the back while Joe was trying to get to the house to get his rifle and defend his family. Then they killed his wife and young daughter, burned the house down around them, and left Joe in his yard bleeding to death. Joe, who cared deeply about people, was the first person in the community to volunteer to help everyone who was in need. Joe, with his wife at one time or another, had entertained in their home all the people in the area. Who could have shot poor Joe Manning in the back twice and destroyed his family and house? What is going on around here? This has always been a nice area of the country. I wonder who is behind all this killing. Why would they kill his wife and daughter, and why would they have burned down his nice house? This is really a mystery. I wonder if Joe will survive. The doctor does not think so. I wonder what the sheriff is doing about it. He does not seem to have a clue. Will anyone else have to die before we find out who the culprits are?
