Book Crying Laughing

Book excerpt: A tragicomic story of bad dates, bad news, bad performances, and one girl's determination to find the funny in high school from the author of Denton Little's Deathdate. Winnie Friedman has been waiting for the world to catch on to what she already knows: she's hilarious. It might be a long wait, though. After bombing a stand-up set at her own bat mitzvah, Winnie has kept her jokes to herself. Well, to herself and her dad, a former comedian and her inspiration. Then, on the second day of tenth grade, the funniest guy in school actually laughs at a comment she makes in the lunch line and asks her to join the improv troupe. Maybe he's even . . . flirting? Just when Winnie's ready to say yes to comedy again, her father reveals that he's been diagnosed with ALS. That is . . . not funny. Her dad's still making jokes, though, which feels like a good thing. And Winnie's prepared to be his straight man if that's what he wants. But is it what he needs? Caught up in a spiral of epically bad dates, bad news, and bad performances, Winnie's struggling to see the humor in it all. But finding a way to laugh is exactly what will see her through. **A Junior Library Guild Selection**

Book Eat Pray Love

Download or read book Eat Pray Love written by Elizabeth Gilbert and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-02-16 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most iconic, beloved, and bestselling books of our time. This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

Book A Season of Grief

Download or read book A Season of Grief written by Bill Valentine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book celebrates a long-term, interracial relationship and details the everyday struggles of a surviving partner trying to carry on in a radically changed world. A Season of Grief chronicles the author's emotional descent after the violent death of his partner of 21 years. Bill Valentine's journal of fear, anger, denial, and loneliness captures the glimmers of hope, moments of serendipity, and mysterious coincidences that emerged from his full-time devotion to grief following the death of Joe Lopes. Lopes died along with 264 others when American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in November 2001 in route to the Dominican Republic. It was the second deadliest accident in U.S. aviation history. He is a word always on my lips as I try to work him into a conversation. He is a memory that I strive to keep alive. So yes, in this sense, he is not gone. But in reality, he is. He is gone as my lover. He is gone as my life partner. He is gone as my soul mate, the only person to whom I periodically bared my soul. He is gone as my best friend, the only person to whom I ever attached that label. So pardon me while I still hang on to the notion that he is not here with me. Pardon me while I cling stubbornly to the insistence that he is gone. Valentine's candid and thoughtful account of his heartbreaking efforts to make sense of his partner's death—and survive in a world without him—is by turns, funny, frightening, sobering, and surprising. In the nine months following the tragedy of Flight 587, Valentine finds every waking moment of his life affected by his partner's absence—from mundane household chores to major life decisions. A Season of Grief is a story told in darkness and light, of hurt and healing, love and loneliness, but mostly, of a man who learns to live with his partner's absence through the persistent, surprising evidence of his presence. Our job on earth is to live with uncertainty, ambiguity, and hope. We are given a limited tool set but one, in my opinion, that's sufficient for the job. Sufficient to allow us to be engaged in life-to love, grieve, work, play, celebrate, and despair. We have a remarkable ability to rebound and grow. We have been granted the capacity for wonder and laughter—especially at ourselves. These last two gifts were bestowed generously on Joe and he, in turn, taught me how vital they are. Making a strong case for gay marriage, A Season of Grief chronicles Valentine's struggles to be recognized as a surviving spouse, including a historic lawsuit with Lambda Legal Defense and Education fund against the New York State Workers Compensation Board. Valentine and Lopes took every conceivable step to formalize their relationship, including New York City Domestic Partnership, but the Workers Compensation Board and a New York State appeals court refused to recognize Valentine as a legal surviving spouse. Grief doesn't come with a set of instructions. But A Season of Grief can help guide you through the lonely journey that follows the death of a loved one. Valentine's memoir is a testament to the healing power of reality and the enduring nature of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you read a book from an author who writes comedy, it’s a pretty good assumption you’re looking to laugh, not cry. Sometimes in life, though, there are far more tears than there is laughter. That’s true in the life of a comedy writer, too. In A “Very Special” Tale of Faith, Hope, & Hand Sanitizer, author Brandon Boswell writes about the personal struggles in his life. From the hilarious to the heartbreaking, Boswell strives to encourage his readers to not only trust in God, but to laugh when they can, cry when they need to, and say “I love you” to all the special people in their lives today ... because there may not be a tomorrow.

Book You Have to Laugh Or Else You ll Cry

Download or read book You Have to Laugh Or Else You ll Cry written by Ruth D. Watkins-Leech and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of my late Aunt Alice, who, like millions of other people, developed Alzheimer's disease. I was responsible for her the last few years of her life after she could no longer live alone. She had quite a sense of humor and could also be difficult. I "inherited" my aunt in 1996 and so much has changed since then. I've included many helpful websites and also provide a comparison of costs in the different kinds of facilities that care for Alzheimer's patients. I also describe the increase in costs from 1996 to the present for each of these kinds of facilities. Barbara Larsen, the author who endorsed my book, has written a book about early-stage Alzheimer's and she provides her readers with detailed activities to decelerate Alzheimer's disease in the early stages. At the end of the book, I discuss the causes of Alzheimer's and how the theory seems to be changing as to the cause. Anyone who has ever had a loved one with dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease will benefit from and enjoy reading this book. Ruth D. Watkins-Leech grew up in the town of Butte, Montana, and attended Longfellow Grade School for eight years and graduated from Butte High School. She was on the journalism staff in high school and had her own column, titled Ruthie's Rumors. Right out of high school, Ruth worked as a dental assistant for several years. She went back to college in her late twenties and received an Associate in Science degree in Respiratory Therapy. She interned at Stanford Hospital and then worked for several years at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California. In her fifties, she traveled extensively with her late husband and wrote travel articles for a magazine titled Lifestyles. Ruth is now retired but enjoys teaching Tai Chi at Gold Country Community Center in Grass Valley, California. She also teaches at an assisted living facility and a convalescent hospital in Grass Valley. All of her compensation is donated to the Gold Country Community Center and to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. Ruth is a breast cancer survivor. This is her first book. Enjoy

Book It s OK Little Rain Cloud to Cry

Download or read book It s OK Little Rain Cloud to Cry written by Charlie Shull and published by Charlie Shull. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children’s picture book about mental health and learning healthy coping skills. Around the whole world, we as humans are hurting right now. Depression, anxiety, fear, and behavioral addictions are all on the rise, and understandably so. Sadly, many of us never saw healthy coping skills modeled by our parents or peers. But how can we, as imperfect people, be good role models? How can we even start such big conversations with our little ones? It all starts with a simple question: how are you feeling today? When you join The Little Rain Cloud community, you are joining a global movement to change the future and make our world a healthier and happier place, simply by making space for emotions. You do not have to be perfect, you just need to share how you feel. Together, the story and song of "It's OK Little Rain Cloud to Cry" help teach kids (and adults too) how to share and cope with their feelings in healthy ways. At first, your kids will see that the Little Rain Cloud is sad, tries to avoid its feelings, and then runs away. But after the Mountain sings the “It’s OK Little Rain Cloud to Cry” song, the Little Rain Cloud shares its feelings and cries through the whole valley, bringing new life and happiness after the rain. You can create your own version of the song, listen to the angelic Charity Waweru singing the "official version" (streaming everywhere), or learn how to play the song yourself using the music lead sheet that is included in the book. Even if you can’t sing, like Charlie the author, try singing this song the next time you feel mad or sad or just a little blue. Gotta watch the book trailer too. It was made by kids for kids so that kids can see their peers modeling healthy coping skills. WARNING: it's absolutely precious so be prepared to laugh, cry, or laugh and cry at the same time. Find it on Charlie's author profile, YouTube, or Instagram. A note from Charlie: We all struggle from time to time, and sadly we often struggle alone in silence. I do not know what keeps us silent, but I do know that it’s OK to cry. I hope through this book we all can learn to cry and laugh with the ones we love a little more often.
