Hunted by Homeland Security, Waylee and her friends must reach a substantial audience by broadcasting their video during the Super Bowl. Book excerpt: Valerie Michaels knows all about life, responsibility--and hockey. After all, her brother is a defenseman for the Baltimore Banners. The last thing she needs--or wants--is to get tangled up with one of her brother's teammates. She doesn't have time, not when running The Maypole is her top priority. She opened the popular sports bar and restaurant two years ago and has been busy ever since. Maybe too busy. Could that be the reason she's suddenly drawn to the troubled Justin Tome? Or is it because she senses something deeper inside him, something she thinks she can fix? On the surface, Justin Tome has it all: a successful career with the Banners, money, fame. But he's been on a downward spiral the last few months. He's become more withdrawn, his game has gone downhill, and he's been drinking too much. He thinks it's nothing more than what's expected of him, nothing more than once again failing to meet expectations and never quite measuring up. Then he starts dating Val and realizes that maybe he has more to offer than he thinks. Or does he? Sometimes voices from the past, voices you've heard all your life, are too strong to overcome. And when the unexpected happens, Justin is certain he's looking at a permanent Delay of Game--unless one strong woman can make him see that life is all about the future, not the past.

Book excerpt: My name is Eric Atno. I live in San Diego, California. I was in the U.S. Navy/Naval Reserves for twenty-six years. I achieved the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. By definition I am a subject matter expert. Most of my time was spent at sea or underway. It is a lifestyle that most normal people find hard to understand. My book is a sailor's eye view in to this strange and unnatural existence. I was a prolific writer while I was underway and overseas. I was told many times that I should write a book. I finally decided to do just that. The process has taken me a few years. I write exactly how I speak. I am real. My story is real (mostly). I take the reader on a twenty-six-year odyssey around the world and back in peace and at war. I take you places that are comical and tragic. It's not just a collection of sea stories. Any retired swab jockey can do that. There are plenty of books out there about the Navy, tactics and warfare. The difference between me and the great Mr. Tom Clancy is that I actually did this stuff. This story is told through a third person or alter-ego which allows me some deniability and freedom to share my stories. I thank you, most humbly, for your time. Enjoy!

Book We Were Going to Change the World

Download or read book We Were Going to Change the World written by Stacy Russo and published by Santa Monica Press. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The punk rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s in Southern California is widely acknowledged as one of the most vibrant, creative periods in all of rock and roll history. And while many books have covered the artists who contributed to the music of that era, none have exclusively focused on the vitality and influence of the women who played such a crucial role in this incredibly dynamic and instrumental movement. We Were Going to Change the World captures the stories of women who were active in the SoCal punk rock scene during this historic time, adding an important voice to its cultural and musical record. Through exclusive interviews with musicians, journalists, photographers, and fans, Stacy Russo has captured the essence of why these women were drawn to punk rock, what they witnessed, and how their involvement in this empowering scene ended up influencing the rest of their lives. From such hugely influential musicians and performers as Exene Cervenka, Alice Bag, Kira, Phranc, Johanna Went, Teresa Covarrubias, and Jennifer Precious Finch, to such highly regarded journalists, DJs, and photographers as Ann Summa, Jenny Lens, Kristine McKenna, Pleasant Gehman, and Stella, to the fans and scenesters who supported the bands and added so much color and energy to the scene, We Were Going to Change the World is an important oral history of the crucial contributions women injected into the Southern California punk rock scene of the 1970s and ’80s. Empowering, touching, and informative, Stacy Russo’s collection of interviews adds a whole new dimension to the literature of both punk rock and women’s studies.
