Book excerpt: Through mesmerizing forays into characterization, voicing, and narrative technique, and with a clean economy of style rare even in short fiction, Astrid Blodgett conjures the moral and existential freight of her fully fledged characters in the throes of realistic moments. From the fascinatingly unhinged hero of "Getting the Cat," to the dreamy survey of prairie landscape and childhood experience of "New Summer Dresses," to the fatal irony of "Ice Break," readers will be hooked from first sentences and carried along on crisp prose. You Haven't Changed a Bit shimmers with the energy of a first book while affording readers the subtlety, complexity, and range of an accomplished master of the genre.
Download or read book In Search of Africa written by Manthia Diawara and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There I was, standing alone, unable to cry as I said goodbye to Sidimé Laye, my best friend, and to the revolution that had opened the door of modernity for me--the revolution that had invented me." This book gives us the story of a quest for a childhood friend, for the past and present, and above all for an Africa that is struggling to find its future. In 1996 Manthia Diawara, a distinguished professor of film and literature in New York City, returns to Guinea, thirty-two years after he and his family were expelled from the newly liberated country. He is beginning work on a documentary about Sékou Touré, the dictator who was Guinea's first post-independence leader. Despite the years that have gone by, Diawara expects to be welcomed as an insider, and is shocked to discover that he is not. The Africa that Diawara finds is not the one on the verge of barbarism, as described in the Western press. Yet neither is it the Africa of his childhood, when the excitement of independence made everything seem possible for young Africans. His search for Sidimé Laye leads Diawara to profound meditations on Africa's culture. He suggests solutions that might overcome the stultifying legacy of colonialism and age-old social practices, yet that will mobilize indigenous strengths and energies. In the face of Africa's dilemmas, Diawara accords an important role to the culture of the diaspora as well as to traditional music and literature--to James Brown, Miles Davis, and Salif Kéita, to Richard Wright, Spike Lee, and the ancient epics of the griots. And Diawara's journey enlightens us in the most disarming way with humor, conversations, and well-told tales.

Download or read book The Silent Woman written by Katharine Laura and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-02-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poems was written over a period of almost 20 years, in Switzerland, where the author resided as a foreigner. The poems were inspired by nature and the mystical feelings it induces, as well as by a quest to comprehend this state of being called life - from our very limited human standpoint. Some poems are related to deeply personal experiences; others embracegenerally the human condition and its psychology. Depending on the spontaneous feelings at the time a poem took form, it would be composed in english or french - whichever language best suited the ambience of the moment. The french poems have been recently translated – which was difficult and a new experience for the author. An endeavor was made to re-create the same mood and tone of the originals.

Download or read book A Man in Full written by Tom Wolfe and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bonfire of the Vanities defined an era--and established Tom Wolfe as our prime fictional chronicler of America at its most outrageous and alive. With A Man in Full, the time the setting is Atlanta, Georgia--a racially mixed late-century boomtown full of fresh wealth, avid speculators, and worldly-wise politicians. Big men. Big money. Big games. Big libidos. Big trouble. The protagonist is Charles Croker, once a college football star, now a late-middle-aged Atlanta real-estate entrepreneur turned conglomerate king, whose expansionist ambitions and outsize ego have at last hit up against reality. Charlie has a 28,000-acre quail-shooting plantation, a young and demanding second wife--and a half-empty office tower with a staggering load of debt. When star running back Fareek Fanon--the pride of one of Atlanta's grimmest slums--is accused of raping an Atlanta blueblood's daughter, the city's delicate racial balance is shattered overnight. Networks of illegal Asian immigrants crisscrossing the continent, daily life behind bars, shady real-estate syndicates, cast-off first wives of the corporate elite, the racially charged politics of college sports--Wolfe shows us the disparate worlds of contemporary America with all the verve, wit, and insight that have made him our most phenomenal, most admired contemporary novelist. A Man in Full is a 1998 National Book Award Finalist for Fiction.

Book excerpt: A gripping novel of dark family secrets, bigotry, lust, and lies set in the world of the phenomenally wealthy The Liebling family is among the wealthiest in New York, but in the eyes of “old money” gentile aristocrats like the patrician Van Degans, they will always be lower-class Jewish nouveau riche—especially since it’s common knowledge that patriarch Jules Liebling built the powerful Ingraham Corporation from the profits he made selling liquor during Prohibition while in cahoots with dangerous mobsters. Jules is long dead and his widow, Hannah, runs the business with a tyrannical hand. Hannah is reluctant to turn over the reins to the heir apparent, her capable son Noah, despite the fact that she is now well into her eighties. But when Noah’s wife, Carol, meets Georgette Van Degan for lunch at Le Cirque, gossip circulates around Manhattan about a thaw between the families and, quite possibly, a partnership. As rumors fly, family skeletons on both sides are exposed, leading to jealousy, betrayal, and even violence. Author Stephen Birmingham explores the dark side of wealth, family, and privilege in The Wrong Kind of Money, brilliantly displaying his phenomenal storytelling skill along with his intimate knowledge of the lives of America’s aristocrats.

Smokey was released after five years, but Tom Lacey (the Nevada Kid) had to stay an extra two for misbehavior. What got Nevada the two extra years was his stubbornness and his bad-boy attitude. It was his sour venom that got him in there in the first place--that along with his love, respect, and damned cursed weakness for beautiful women. In book 3 of the Southwest Series, the Nevada Kid and Smokey are released from prison. Nevada heads southwest and joins the Broken Arrow Ranch rodeo circuit to make some fast money, hoping to reach the goal he set for himself of buying a cattle ranch. Download or read book Double Life written by B. Michael Moro and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I decided to write my third manuscript, "Double Life", it was a very tough decision to go actually ahead with it. My writing style incorporates a lot of my personal experiences into the building of a story. “Double Life” is a story about the Memoirs of a young man and how he went from a relatively innocent teenager to transforming into a feared, violent wise guy and deep cover agent. The story is about his double life. A calm life with his family and the separate life of a vicious hunter/assassin and body guard. It's a story of his life in organized crime and of being recruited to work indirectly for the government. It's an emotional roller coaster ride for the main character from his mid teens to his mid thirties. His love for the Ladies and how his Double Life eventually brought him into forced retirement, after it burned him out and had him seeking peace and solitude. In the end he had to find the one special woman he could finish his life out with that he felt completely comfortable with and to raise a family of their own. “Double Life” is a raw and powerful story that will grip the reader tightly. It will pull you into its world as you feel yourself becoming a part of the main character, or at least as close as a close friend can be. When the end comes, you will feel the anguish of a story that needs to be told. If you can put the book down you will be in deep thought, wondering what it would be like to be the main character and having your world evolve into a very dangerous, adrenaline filled rush of life, death, conspiracy, trafficking, and living a “Double Life”.
