Download or read book The Revolving Door of Life written by Alexander McCall Smith and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excitement abounds when the revolving door of life brings fresh faces and hilarious new developments to the residents of 44 Scotland Street. Things are looking up for seven-year-old Bertie Pollock. The arrival of his spirited grandmother and the absence of his meddlesome mother—who is currently running a book club in a Bedouin harem (don’t ask)—bring unforeseen blessings: no psychotherapy, no Italian lessons, and no yoga classes. Meanwhile, surprises await Scotland Street’s grown-ups. Matthew makes a discovery that could be a major windfall for his family, but also presents a worrisome dilemma. Pat learns a secret about her father’s fiancée that may shake up her family, unless she can convince the perpetually narcissistic Bruce to help her out. And the Duke of Johannesburg finds himself in sudden need of an explanation—and an escape route—when accosted by a determined guest at a soirée. From the cunning schemes of the Association of Scottish Nudists to the myriad expressive possibilities of the word “aye,” Alexander McCall Smith guides us through the risks and rewards of friendship, love, and family with his usual inimitable wit and irresistible charm.

Where there's no black market, they create one. midnight's simulacra is a hysterical, scientifically rigorous, and fastpaced thriller, a modern picaresque, a portrait of autists as young men, and unlike any other novel you've read.
Download or read book White Plague written by James Abel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the frozen waters of the Arctic, Marine bioterror expert Joe Rush races to save a submarine crew from a lethal threat... “The pleas for help stopped coming just after five in the morning, Washington time. The Pentagon staffers cleared for handling sensitive messages sat in horror for a moment and then tried other ways to reach the victims. Nothing worked so they called the Director, who phoned me.” In the remote, frozen waters of the Arctic Ocean, the high-powered and technically advanced submarine U.S.S. Montana is in peril. Adrift and in flames, the boat—and the entire crew—could be lost. The only team close enough to get to them in time is led by Marine doctor and bio-terror expert Joe Rush. With only thirty-six hours before the surviving crew perish, Joe and his team must race to rescue the Montana and ensure that the boat doesn’t fall into enemy hands. Because a fast-approaching foreign submarine is already en route, and tensions may explode. But that’s the least of their troubles. For the surviving sailors are not alone on the sub. Something is trapped with them. Something deadly lethal. Something that plagued mankind long ago, when it devastated the entire world. And the crew of the Montana has unknowingly set it free. Now, Joe and his team must not only find a way to save the Montana and her crew, but stop a lethal horror of apocalyptic consequence from being unleashed on all humanity.

Download or read book Ace McCool written by Jack Desmarais and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ace McCool is an over-the-top spoof of the airline industry. It relates the hilarious misadventures of a fly-by-night, corner-cutting airline called Down East International, based in Moncton, New Brunswick. The stories start with Ace McCool, a World War II pilot, and the rag-tag characters he picks up along the way as his airline progresses from DC-3s to a Boeing 727 over the years from just after the war to 1985. Dim-witted pilot Pete Braddock "who could have flown the crate the airplane came in." The Smarts, an insufferable Englishman but "a polemaster of the first water." Churchy Laflamme, "de bes' co-pilot of dem all." Cowboy McCloskey, a big Albertan dinosaur with oil wells on his ranch. He commutes to Moncton in a privately-owned CF-104. Red Starr, a hippie pilot and, on the side, lead of a rock group called Red Starr and the Commies. Those pilots and a few more, as well as stewardesses (as they were called) Mile-High Millie, Crazy Iris and Stew Jane, and a few other characters stumble their way from one impossible situation to another. These are the same stories that brought laughter to readers of Canadian Aviation magazine. They are assembled together in book form. Come fly and laugh with Ace McCool of Down East International.
