Book excerpt: Highly Commended for the Diversity, Inclusion and Equality Award at the Business Book Awards A powerful 10 step guide to transformative entrepreneurship for under-represented people from Eric Collins, host of the award-winning Channel 4 reality business show The Money Maker. 'Eric Collins is one of the most powerful business people in Britain.' Long-lasting economic empowerment - from education to health outcomes - is key to solving the multiple problems that result from systemic racism and sexism. And it is the best way to close the inequality gaps that have hampered and continue to hinder Black people and all women too. To address this problem head on, Eric Collins co-founded venture capital firm Impact X Capital to invest in under-represented entrepreneurs in the UK and Europe. In We Don't Need Permission, Collins identifies ten key principles of successful entrepreneurship, and reveals how it's possible to change a system that has helped some, while holding others back. The book not only aims to inspire and motivate under-represented people to take their future and economic destiny into their own hands, but will demand of current business leaders and organizations that they do business better. It's time to stop waiting for someone else to give permission and start boldly making the world we want to see. __________

Book We Don t Need Permission

Download or read book We Don t Need Permission written by Pat Glaros and published by Pat Gaskill. This book was released on 2007 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is time for us homosexuals to grow up and quit asking for permission to marry. I have just the plan to enable us to take our lives into our own hands. The plan follows instructions from the Declaration of Independence, and examples from the Constitution and Supreme Court cases. Even currently, we are told not to tell who we are or we can't defend this country. Do you feel like an American? This government and its citizens cannot have it both ways: either we are part of this society deserving of the same tax breaks as heterosexual couples, and our participation in the military is as respected or we are not. If not, then we must separate from this union and take our tax base with us. Our brothers and sisters at Stonewall stood up united and stopped the constant harrassment by police officers. We need to learn from that example and honor their heroic stand by taking our life condition to the next level: Freedom from being a political election bargaining chip. The last discussion we had about our rights was the first Clinton campaign, which brought out Don't Ask, Don't Tell. All talks have stopped since then. Actually, we are losing ground. President Bush is pushing for a ban on homosexual marriage. If things continue as such, we will continue paying more taxes than heterosexuals. Since we are not treated as equal members of this society, we have every right to form our own union and take our tax base with us. We can decide which foreign and domestic policies to support. There are many scientists out there who could use our dollars to search for an AIDS cure, for example. What do you say; are we adult enough or do we need religiously controlled government permission?

Book The 5 Levels of Leadership

Download or read book The 5 Levels of Leadership written by John C. Maxwell and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use this helpful book to learn about the leadership tools to fuel success, grow your team, and become the visionary you were meant to be. True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right. And if you have the skill and dedication, you can reach the pinnacle of leadership—where experience will allow you to extend your influence beyond your immediate reach and time for the benefit of others. The 5 Levels of Leadership are: 1. Position—People follow because they have to. 2. Permission—People follow because they want to. 3. Production—People follow because of what you have done for the organization. 4. People Development—People follow because of what you have done for them personally. 5. Pinnacle—People follow because of who you are and what you represent. Through humor, in-depth insight, and examples, internationally recognized leadership expert John C. Maxwell describes each of these stages of leadership. He shows you how to master each level and rise up to the next to become a more influential, respected, and successful leader.

Book excerpt: This book explores ideas around minimalism, simplicity and how to live comfortably with less. The modern world can be a complicated, frenzied, and noisy place, filled with too many options, products, ideas and opinions. That explains why what many of us long for is simplicity: a life that can be more pared down, peaceful, and focused on the essentials. But finding simplicity is not always easy; it isn't just a case of emptying out our closets or trimming back commitments in our diaries. True simplicity requires that we understand the roots of our distractions - and develop a canny respect for the stubborn reasons why things can grow complex and overwhelming. This book is a guide to the simpler lives we crave and deserve. It considers how we might achieve simplicity across a range of areas. Along the way, we learn about Zen Buddhism, modernist architecture, monasteries, psychoanalysis, and why we probably don't need more than three good friends or a few treasured belongings. It isn't enough that our lives should look simple; they need to be simple from the inside. This book takes a psychological approach, guiding us towards less contorted hearts and minds. We have for too long been drowning in excess and clutter from a confusion about our aspirations; A Simpler Life helps us tune out the static and focus on what properly matters to us.

Download or read book Permission to Feel written by Marc Brackett, Ph.D. and published by Celadon Books. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mental well-being of children and adults is shockingly poor. Marc Brackett, author of Permission to Feel, knows why. And he knows what we can do. "We have a crisis on our hands, and its victims are our children." Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an emotion scientist, he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults – a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel. He was the first adult who managed to see Marc, listen to him, and recognize the suffering, bullying, and abuse he’d endured. And that was the beginning of Marc’s awareness that what he was going through was temporary. He wasn’t alone, he wasn’t stuck on a timeline, and he wasn’t “wrong” to feel scared, isolated, and angry. Now, best of all, he could do something about it. In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it. RULER has been proven to reduce stress and burnout, improve school climate, and enhance academic achievement. This book is the culmination of Marc’s development of RULER and his way to share the strategies and skills with readers around the world. It is tested, and it works. This book combines rigor, science, passion and inspiration in equal parts. Too many children and adults are suffering; they are ashamed of their feelings and emotionally unskilled, but they don’t have to be. Marc Brackett’s life mission is to reverse this course, and this book can show you how.

Download or read book Freedom Without Permission written by Zachary Slayback and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-05-25 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Freedom Without Permission takes the idea of human liberty seriously, not just as a policy for a free society but a personal philosophy for free people. There is so much wisdom here. A careful reading will save you years of diversions and get you on the right track toward building a new way of life." -- Jeffrey Tucker Too many people seek permission when trying to advance their own lives. They want external actors to open gates for them without realizing that the gates don't exist. Permission isn't needed and those who think it is create their own barriers to advancing their lives and realizing personal achievement. People believe they must look to others for permission to live their lives. They elect politicians to change the world. They believe schools award education. They believe external validation is the way to a career. They externalize their personal hardships instead of recognizing how often they inflict the hardships onto themselves. They wait for an invitation to create value when the impetus lies in their own hands and minds. They develop dependencies and preconditions that keep them from entrepreneurship. These are all myths. You don't need to ask for permission. But how do you do create a life without permission? The point of this book is to break more than to build. We are not attempting to provide a full-fledged philosophy on life without permission. Instead, the goal is to deconstruct and then offer exercises and habits of thought that will enhance your freedom. The core idea is that you don't need anyone's permission to do the things you want to do in life, or learn what you want to learn or feel how you want to feel. An entire intellectual edifice has been constructed to convince you of the opposite, and most of us start out seeing only though its windows. We want to help you tear it down or at least break a few panes so you can see beyond it and begin to form your own ideas about what your life can be. We wish to shatter some paradigms so you can begin to build your own process of learning and living. We begin with lessons that can be learned from history regarding our own freedom. We then look at politics, then education and move into career and entrepreneurship, finally, we end with practices for personal freedom. We span the process of growing up and moving from learning to living, creating the process as you go. This process requires knowledge (starting with self-knowledge), skill, experience, confidence, and relationships, but it doesn't necessarily require schooling, grades, credentials, or submission to a system or plan created by anyone else. The resources you need are already within you. We peel back some myths and help you see freedom as your own, not something you need permission to enjoy.
