Download or read book Listen to the Heron s Words written by Gloria Goodwin Raheja and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-04-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many South Asian oral traditions, herons are viewed as duplicitous and conniving. These traditions tend also to view women as fragmented identities, dangerously split between virtue and virtuosity, between loyalties to their own families and those of their husbands. In women's songs, however, symbolic herons speak, telling of alternative moral perspectives shaped by women. The heron's words—and women's expressive genres more generally—criticize pervasive North Indian ideologies of gender and kinship that place women in subordinate positions. By inviting readers to "listen to the heron's words," the authors convey this shift in moral perspective and suggest that these spoken truths are compelling and consequential for the women in North India. The songs and narratives bear witness to a provocative cultural dissonance embedded in women's speech. This book reveals the power of these critical commentaries and the fluid and permeable boundaries between spoken words and the lives of ordinary village women.

Book Kiwimade Narrative Sermons

Download or read book Kiwimade Narrative Sermons written by Myk Habets and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of over forty narrative sermons illustrate the science and art of taking a text of Scripture, almost any text, and crafting it into a narrative that effectively and affectively communicates the content of Holy Scripture in ways that impact the congregation. Spanning the canon of Holy Scripture the present volume represents a snapshot of current preaching by Baptist women and men from Aotearoa New Zealand in an attempt to teach by illustration what narrative sermons may look like, and to model the potential they have to communicate God's Word written. Originally preached to a diverse range of congregations, each sermon has been re-written for publication and illustrates biblical fidelity, imaginative creativity, and contextual sensitivity. Kiwimade Narrative Sermons is a key resource text for classes on homiletics, a refresher course for seasoned ministers of the Word, and a devotional aid in its own right.

Book excerpt: It is 1887 in Amsterdam and Johanna Bonger wants to do something different with her life than teaching, translating languages, and managing the back office of her father’s business. She fears she will spend the rest of her days growing old, lonely, and bitter. But all of that is about to change when she is introduced to Theo van Gogh. When Theo sweeps Johanna off her feet with his cosmopolitan Parisian lifestyle, she eventually agrees to be his wife. After she enters the avant-garde world of art and modernism in France, she soon comes in contact with his troubled brother, Vincent, who resents her new place in his family. Johanna believes Theo needs to stop spending so much time and resources supporting his struggling artist brother whose mental instability continually sabotages his big ideas and career. When tragedy strikes, Johanna realizes her place in both Theo’s and Vincent’s lives, and makes decisions that forever transform the art world, and her into the most important woman the art world ever forgot. The Van Gogh Woman is a captivating story of love, passion, and genius as a woman saves Vincent van Gogh from obscurity and brings his art to the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning cycle of one-act plays spanning two centuries of American history: “hauntingly memorable [with a] poetic impulse” (Time). One of the most important contemporary works of political theater, The Kentucky Cycle was awarded the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for its astute and dramatically epic investigation of the brutal birth of America. Set in the Appalachian Mountains and spanning seven generations—from 1775 to 1975—this saga of rural Kentucky digs beneath our American mythology to confront the truth of our national history. It is the story of three families whose lives are irrevocably intertwined as they struggle for control over a portion of the Cumberland Plateau. From the darker realities of our pioneer heritage to the bloody lessons of the Civil War, and from the Unionization of coal miners to the harsh environmental legacy of strip mining, this fascinating work chronicles the lives of ordinary people struggling to find a better place for themselves in an unpredictable world. “Serious drama with a dark center . . . an epic.” —The New Yorker “Riveting theater . . . [a] monumental work.” —Los Angeles Times
