Hope Taylor arrives in Apple Springs to start her new life as the first female pastor of Faith Chapel Episcopal Church. The northern California town's quaint cottages, bungalows, and shops promise a fresh start for the 42-year-old widow and Bogie, her scruffy black Labrador. But where is Father Christopher? The kindly old rector who hired Pastor Hope was supposed to meet her upon her arrival, but he's nowhere to be seen. Hope's faith springs eternal, so she explores the little white church hoping to find Father Christopher. But when she enters the columbarium, she instead finds church elder Stanley King--his skull crushed by a fallen burial urn. Hope had made Stanley's acquaintance before, and had struggled to take a charitable view of his character. Stanley was as wicked as he was wealthy, as petty as he was pious. His soul may have been holy, but his behavior was wholly rotten. The last time Hope had seen him, he had shouted drunkenly that she would preach at Faith Chapel over his dead body. Many of the townsfolk witnessed the altercation, so Hope finds herself as the prime suspect in Stanley's murder. With Bogie's four-footed assistance, Hope is determined to find the real killer and clear her name...even if it will require a bit of divine intervention.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ebb is human, to flow divine. Our main character, Thomas Burke, goes by the nickname Figas, a math prodigy who specializes in prediction theory. When he learns that the tea grown in his childhood home has become of extreme value, he predicts that multinational corporations will swoop in and wrestle control of the tea operations from the gentle islanders. Figas sails with Capt. Martin aboard the Lady Slipper, reaching Green Island on the morning of the biggest festival of the year. It isnt long before the tea master, Uncle Sun, sweeps Figas and his perfect prediction model over the threshold. Potential threats are forgotten, as Figas becomes reacquainted with the main character of the story, the island of Viridis. Across Teagates swinging bridge, the traditional way of tea still prospers. Hidden within the simple lifestyle lies the center of the world, where time stops for tea. Mirroring the ruthless Dutch East Indian Company, which controlled the tea and spice trade for two hundred years, the ACUGO Corporation unleashes a plot to take control of the islands precious export. Put on the kettle, and cozy up to a nice cup of tea and watch as the islanders use a mixture of Upaya, (skillful means) and humor to resist the outside forces that threaten them. Viridis, also known as Green Island, is a tiny fi ctional nation founded in the 12th century by a mixed-race crew whose ship was blown off course while returning from Canton. Thomas Burke, descendant of an island founder, left home to pursue a career in mathematics, specializing in prediction theory; Viridians call him Figas, patois for Figures. Now, a foundation director has tapped him to return and warn the gentle islanders that Viridis teamore expensive per ounce than goldis in danger of attracting greedy attention. When an occupying force takes over Viridis, Figas and the locals face an enormous challenge: how to fi nd an island way of protecting themselves. They call on sacrifi ce, patience, showmanship and the spirit of the islandand readers will join the cheering section. In his accomplished debut novel, Seiler deftly sketches memorable, diverse characters while drawing on fascinating historical background. Witty, idiomatic dialogue provides many pithy lines: a fox is a wolf who sends fl owers; The Buddha would play viola. Its the middle way. The opening setupnot to mention the novels charm, wit and underlying seriousnessrecalls The Mouse That Roared by Leonard Wibberley, but this islike Sighing Woman Teaa unique and fl avorful blend, by turns comic, poignant, philosophical and romantic. As the book progresses, it gets tighter, funnier and more deeply emotional. Seiler never condescends to his islanders; they may act in comical ways, but they, the island and their tea are to be taken seriously. Nor are the invaders uniformly evil: An Irish soldiers good heart makes an excellent counterpoint to the blockheaded Cmdr. Prescott. Seiler nicely handles the islanders tricky maneuvers to outwit the invaders, holding enough back for suspense and providing several well-done set pieces that reveal the islanders gifts with satisfying payoffs. Steeped in the charm and traditions of tea drinking and underlaid with serious thought about compassion, this novel is simply wonderful. A delight to read from start to finish. Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Samantha's only friends were characters in books, but her real life takes an extraordinary turn when a mysterious "Mr. Knightley" offers her a full journalism scholarship—on the condition that she write to him regularly. Will their long-distance friendship unlock her heart? Sam is, to say the least, bookish. An English major of the highest order, her diet has always been Austen, Dickens, and Shakespeare. The problem is that both her prose and conversation tend to be more Elizabeth Bennet than Samantha Moore. But life for the twenty-three-year-old orphan is about to get stranger than fiction. An anonymous, Dickensian benefactor calling himself Mr. Knightley offers to put Sam through Northwestern University’s prestigious Medill School of Journalism. There is only one catch: Sam must write frequent letters to the mysterious donor, detailing her progress. Sam’s letters to Mr. Knightley become increasingly confessional as she begins to share everything from her painful childhood memories to her growing feelings for eligible novelist Alex Powell. While Alex draws Sam into a world of warmth and literature that feels like it’s straight out of a book, old secrets are drawn to light. And as Sam learns to love and trust Alex and herself, she learns once again how quickly trust can be broken. Reminding us all that our own true character is not meant to be hidden, Katherine Reay’s debut novel follows a young woman’s journey as she sheds her protective persona and embraces the person she was meant to become. Praise for Dear Mr. Knightley: “Katherine Reay’s Dear Mr. Knightley kept me up until 2:00 a.m.; I simply couldn’t put it down.”—Eloisa James, New York Times bestselling author of Once Upon a Tower “Sprinkled with classic literary references and filled with poignant characterizations, Katherine Reay’s modern retelling of Jean Webster’s Daddy-Long-Legs is both reverently crafted and delightfully surprising.”—Lauren Ann Nattress, Austenprose.com “Katherine Reay’s touching debut novel made me cry in all the right places. For joy.”—Laurie Viera Rigler, author of Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict Sweet, stand-alone contemporary romance Includes discussion questions for book clubs, a Q&A with the author, and Sam’s reading list

Book excerpt: It has been said that next to the biblical writers, the most quoted person in American pulpits, churches, and educational institutions, hands down, is C. S. Lewis. He has become such a part of the speaking and thinking rhythm of those of us in the West, that without him, well . . . who would we quote? Peter Kreeft sums it up quite nicely: "[Lewis] is read with enormous affection and loyalty by a wide and diversified audience today. . . . In fact, more of his books are sold today than those of any other Christian writer in history" (Kreeft, Lewis and the Two Roads to God, The Washington Times, in The World & I, February 1987, 354). Why Lewis? is a primer, designed especially to stimulate thinking about Lewis and offer at least seven reasons why he has made such an indelible impact upon so many. Quotes, references, anecdotes, and footnotes are provided in easily accessible fashion to assist the budding Lewis scholar into elements of deeper study, while at the same time offering the most seasoned aficionado some fresh perspectives as well.
