Book excerpt: In the sixth book of the Chronicles of Mattias Series, Mattias Denson, King of the Seven Realms, is once again confronted with new characters and adversaries looking to attack his kingdoms, this time through new unconquered territory. New figures emerge as the invaders are unmasked; the invaders have no love for the colonists along the coast of the eastern Mar, or for the rule of law under the Covenant. They are slavers and ruthless conquerors looking for gold and Lesti inventory. Pagan, immortal and Lesti leaders send representatives to Mattias Denson, who now occupies New Nimbus, once the domain of Lord Seth and his son Prince Xerxes. They have left the Kir Oasis and have traveled west in search of Old Nimbus, the kingdom in the clouds. Mattias is soon inundated with new people and their stories of who they are, what they want, and what they want from him. But are they true to anything beyond themselves, and can these leaders be trusted? Problems develop in the far west as well as the far east; his family and his armies are fragmented and unsteady. Alana Q introduces new peoples and characters to the mythology and lore of the Chronicles series which began with The King of the Northern Fells. As the world of Mattias Denson and his wives grows and matures, so too does Mattias as he faces his world burdened by the tasks given him by the gods and challenged by his military and family. New challenges are as frequent as are the betrayals and new characters who pose them. Two armies approach. What will happen to the Seven Realms when the tsunami of evil finally hits?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 50 years after his death, Louis Armstrong remains one of the 20th century's most iconic figures. Popular fans still appreciate his later hits such as "Hello, Dolly!" and "What a Wonderful World," while in the jazz community, he remains venerated for his groundbreaking innovations in the 1920s. The achievements of Armstrong's middle years, however, possess some of the trumpeter's most scintillating and career-defining stories. But the story of this crucial time has never been told in depth until now. Between 1929 and 1947, Armstrong transformed himself from a little-known trumpeter in Chicago to an internationally renowned pop star, setting in motion the innovations of the Swing Era and Bebop. He had a similar effect on the art of American pop singing, waxing some of his most identifiable hits such as "Jeepers Creepers" and "When You're Smiling." However as author Ricky Riccardi shows, this transformative era wasn't without its problems, from racist performance reviews and being held up at gunpoint by gangsters to struggling with an overworked embouchure and getting arrested for marijuana possession. Utilizing a prodigious amount of new research, Riccardi traces Armstrong's mid-career fall from grace and dramatic resurgence. Featuring never-before-published photographs and stories culled from Armstrong's personal archives, Heart Full of Rhythm tells the story of how the man called "Pops" became the first "King of Pop."

Download or read book Straighten Up and Fly Right written by Will Friedwald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular and memorable American musicians of the 20th century, Nat King Cole (1919-65) is remembered today as both a pianist and a singer, a feat rarely accomplished in the world of popular music. Now, in this complete life and times biography, author Will Friedwald offers a new take on this fascinating musician, framing him first as a bandleader and then as a star. In Cole's early phase, Friedwald explains, his primary task of keeping his trio going was just as much of a focus for him as his own playing and singing, always a collective or group performance. In the second act, Cole's collaborators were more likely to be arranger-conductors like Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins, rather than his sidemen on bass and guitar. In the first act, his sidemen were equals, in the second phase, his collaborators were tasked exclusively with putting the focus on him, making him sound good, while being largely invisible themselves. Friedwald brings his full musical knowledge to bear in putting the man in the work, demonstrating how this duality appears over and over again in Cole's life and career: jazz vs. pop, solo vs. trio, piano vs. voice, wife number one (Nadine) vs. wife number two (Maria), the good songs vs. the less-than-good songs, the rhythm numbers vs. the ballads, the funny songs and novelties vs. the "serious" songs of love and loss, Cole as an advocate for the Great American Songbook vs. Cole the intrepid explorer of other options: world music, rhythm & blues, country & western. Cole was different from his contemporaries in other ways; for roughly ten years after the war, the majority of hitmakers on the pop charts were veterans of the big band experience, from Sinatra on down.

Book Be the Head

  • Author : Dominique Jean
  • Publisher : Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
  • Release : 2022-02-10
  • ISBN : 1098059794
  • Pages : 32 pages

Download or read book Be the Head written by Dominique Jean and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote the first version of this book a month after Kenneth passed away. We were blaming ourselves for not following up on his sister's intuition. She had been his voice since they were born. I was mad at the world. I couldn't bring our Kenneth back. I knew it was a sign of depression. I encouraged the kids to seek help. I didn't feel like I needed help. I decided to write this book and lashed out at the world. As soon I finished the book, I felt so much better. I thought that I miraculously got healed. The devil is a liar. I sent Be the Head to two publishers, but they denied it. I was not even told a reason. When my cooking book was done, I sent it to both publishers; it was accepted right away. As a spiritual being, I practice meditation as soon as I finish my prayers. I heard a voice say, "Everyone who will read the book will know that it was made for a good cause, but they will also be able to tell that you were angry at the world when you wrote it. Rewrite it now. You will know and feel the difference. Being mean and bitter isn't who you are. Your dad raised you better. Your other books; Kenneth's Creole Cajun Creative Kitchen Recipes, and As Reality Strikes don't portray you as such. Why would you want Be the Head to give people the wrong impression of you? Instead, make it a tool that will help others." I obeyed the call. My spirit guide never fails me. This book will help raise awareness for the need to report abuse of any shape or form right away and a way for everyone to get CPR certification by making it a must. Seek help for yourself. Recognize the early stages of depression, seek help for yourself if needed; then get help for someone you love. Share good information to improve the lives of other people. Together we can make this world a better place. Remain blessed.
