Book It Stops Here

Download or read book It Stops Here written by Rueben George and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER A personal account of one man’s confrontation with colonization that illuminates the philosophy and values of a First Nation on the front lines of the fight against an extractive industry, colonial government, and threats to the life-giving Salish Sea. It Stops Here is the profound story of the spiritual, cultural, and political resurgence of a nation taking action to reclaim their lands, waters, law, and food systems in the face of colonization. In deeply moving testimony, it recounts the intergenerational struggle of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to overcome colonial harms and the powerful stance they have taken alongside allies and other Indigenous nations across Turtle Island against the development of the Trans Mountain Pipeline—a fossil fuel megaproject on their unceded territories. In a firsthand account of the resurgence told by Rueben George, one of the most prominent leaders of the widespread opposition to the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion, It Stops Here reveals extraordinary insights and revelations from someone who has devoted more than a decade of his life to fighting the project. Rueben shares stories about his family’s deep ancestral connections to their unceded lands and waters, which are today more commonly known as Vancouver, British Columbia and the Burrard Inlet. He discloses how, following the systematic cultural genocide enacted by the colonial state, key leaders of his community, such as his grandfather, Chief Dan George, always taught the younger generations to be proud of who they were and to remember the importance of their connection to the inlet. Part memoir, part call to action, It Stops Here is a compelling appeal to prioritize the sacred over oil and extractive industries, while insisting that settler society honour Indigenous law and jurisdiction over unceded territories rather than exploiting lands and reducing them to their natural resources.

Book Parentless Parents

Download or read book Parentless Parents written by Allison Gilbert and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parentless Parents is the first book to show how the absence of grandparents impacts everything about the way mothers and fathers raise their children--from everyday parenting decisions to the relationships they have with their spouses and in-laws. For the first time in U.S. history, as the average age of women giving birth has increased significantly, millions of children are at risk of having fewer years with their grandparents than ever before. How has this substantial shift affected parents and kids? Journalist, award-winning television producer, and parentless parent Allison Gilbert has polled and studied more than 1,300 parentless parents from across the United States and a dozen other countries to find out. Through her pioneering research, Gilbert not only shares her own story and the significant and poignant effect that this trend has had on her and hundreds of other families, but also the myriad ways these mothers and fathers have learned to keep the memory of their parents alive for their children, and to find the support and understanding they need.

Book Through Windows of Time

Download or read book Through Windows of Time written by Charlotte G. Tucker and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up with my grandparents, Harley and Laura Krigbaum (Pa and Ma) was more than just an experience. It was life altering. This book is an effort to keep those memories alive and make them beneficial to others, especially my own children and grandchildren. Their trials were many and their days were often hard; yet, they seldom complained about anything. If we thought things were not fair or should be different, they reminded us to count our blessings and things would look different. This book is based on the lives and stories they told us over the years and much time spent with them. Pa could trace his family back as far as the Mayflower. His Great Grandfather William’s great, great grandfather, Conrad Krigbaum, had been an immigrant from Holland in the early 1600s. Ma’s family had always lived in the south and had not only lived though the civil war, but horrible Indian wars, as well. Her parents had died when she was fifteen. Somehow through all the pain, she would only show love to everyone. The stories have been passed from generation to generation. Ma and Pa were both born in 1893, about twenty eight years after the Civil War. His family was from the north and hers from the south. Both families had suffered unbearably but tried to put it all behind them and move on. The past was in the past. Much of this book is based on actual events or stories. The dates and family members are as accurate as I could find; although, some names may have been changed or left out. More of it is based on only sketches of what I can remember. With memory limitations, I have added details for a better story.

Book Nutcracker

  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2015-02-17
  • ISBN : 150400681X
  • Pages : 396 pages

Download or read book Nutcracker written by Shana Alexander and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-02-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller: The “compelling” story of Frances Schreuder, who persuaded her son to kill her multimillionaire father, Franklin Bradshaw (The Washington Post Book World). In August of 1983 Shana Alexander, acclaimed journalist and chronicler of the lives and criminal trials of Jean Harris and Patty Hearst, wrote to New York City ballet patron Frances Schreuder on the eve of her murder trial. Schreuder stood accused of unlawfully causing the death of her father, Franklin Bradshaw, and of soliciting, encouraging, and aiding her prep school–student son in the homicide in the hope of financial gain. Alexander never received a response, but she flew to Salt Lake City and met with Schreuder’s mother, the matriarch of the Mormon dynasty—eighty-year-old Berenice Bradshaw. Nutcracker is the true story of this crime—the twisting four-year police investigation, the derailed cover-up and conspiracy, the dramatic trials. It is also the tale of a family riven by greed and madness. Drawing on interviews with all the major players, Alexander paints a powerful portrait of a psychopathic woman driven by avarice, so depraved that she persuaded her own son to commit grand-patricide. A finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime, Nutcracker is “a Chekovian family tragedy [that] builds in intensity around this uniquely twisted woman” (The Washington Post Book World).

Book Cognitive Liberty

Download or read book Cognitive Liberty written by Chris P. Younce. and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind is at a crossroads. Our social systems are breaking down because we’ve lost touch with our ecological position in the natural world. We’ve become utterly distracted by the fast-paced demands of daily life to the point where we’ve lost track of who we are. We’ve forgotten how to work as a team and nurture the partnerships that helped us be who we are today. Our neglected partnerships and abusive attitude toward our homeland reflect a mass symptom of ignorance that begs me to question the sanity of modern culture. Our inability to apply our attention to our intention has placed our species into vulnerable territory. Nature beckons us to wake up and remember who’s in charge. The research explored throughout this book is based on the personal evolutionary process of creativity: our way of relating to the world. The reason this exploration is so personal is that it deals with the universal qualities of consciousness, as experienced uniquely by each individual on a subjective level. Thus, the theme of this project is to identify the objective aspect of evolving human consciousness by means of cognitive liberation. This quest is meant to address the peculiar problems of the unconscious and subconscious that shape ordinary experiences. This book considers consciousness as the locus of evolutionary change. What does it mean to be free from insecurity, to not get caught up in the trap of our minds and carried away from what truly matters in life? Cognitive Liberty offers our bodies and minds a resolution to our being and embrace life as a journey on its own terms. It’s a friendly reminder that we’re part of a learning process in constant stages of development and indeterminism. The more we’re able to have fun with the process, the greater the freedom we experience in return.
