Sierra nevada Snowy Range - has been well renamed by John Muir the Range of Light; for these mountains of California are the Illumined Mountains. Their mural walls rise to over thirteen thousand feet, and the battlemented peaks and domes fifteen hun dred feet higher in the clouds. On their flanks and lower sides are the Clark covers of the world's greatest coniferous forests; above, the High Sierra glows, amber - like in the afternoon sun of summer, graced with chains of pearl - like mountain lakes and each high peak throated with a scarf of snow. These high granite walls are here and there riven by great chasms, ice-sculptured on a mighty plan. Of these deep Sierra rifts, the greatest in sheer walls and mighty waterfalls is the Yosemite. The Yosemite National Park is in the heart of the Sierra in central - eastern California, and is now easy of access - none of the American wonderlands more so. From north and south the Southern Pacific joins the Yosemite Valley Railroad at Merced, and the latter with a journey of eighty miles up the beautiful Merced River takes the traveler to the park line El Portal. A stage ride of fo'urteen miles completes the trip to the heart of the Valley. Both at El Portal and in the Valley are such ties to civilization the year round as steam heated, electric - lighted hotels, with telephone, telegraph and express offices. There are comfortable tent villages in summer for those who would be out-of - doors; and for others, nearer kin to the wilderness and who would rest beneath bright stars, there is the whole width of the Sierra, with dry, clear summer nights and sunny days. Then there is the Bologna Sausage tree, hanging full of short stubby limbs in sections, not unlike bologna sausage. We are now rattling and rolling along, ominously near the edges of chasms, which grow deeper at every turn. The brain grows dizzy at an upward glance and the heart sinks, as the eyes are cast down, when at last we reach the summit. Our first experience in staging down the mountains, almost takes the breath away, until we become somewhat accustomed to the sweep and curve of the roads. As we near the valley, the scene is enhanced by a running stream, clear as crystal, showing the fish at the bottom, and here are hundreds of campers enjoying small fry and the mountain air. Shimmering through the trees is the dying sunlight, touching the leaves with silver and gold, and transforming the dusty road into a street of crimson light, as we wind in and out among the rocks and trees, beside the river, as it rushes onward to the sea. We can imagine that the New Jerusalem lies not far away, as we revel in the changing light, and listen to the birds singing lullabys to the little ones in their keeping, as they rock them in the wind-swayed boughs, by the flickering light of the all mother's candle. The woods begin to darken with the lengthening shadows, as we near the floor of the valley, when Presto! Change! We sweep through the gates of the long mountain ranges, into the dazzling blaze of a sunset on the mountains. We spring to our feet and wave our hands, while we sing Hallelujah, as the doors of this heavenly city are thrown open to receive us. In the warmth and glow and grandeur of this new old scene, how the soul rejoices that I and my father are one. That the light flashing hitherward from the heavens is the same light that flashed thither ward from the misty eyes upturned to meet it; that the All hail of recognition is mutual. Immed iately before our enraptured vision, lies against the sky, the peaks of two lofty mountains. These with the space between them, form an undulation not unlike the great waves of the sea. Behind and through them, the sunlight plays, like smiles around the dimpled mouth of a child. A misty, hazy blue tinges the whole mountain range. It is darkness in the valley. Along these two majestic peaks the lines of gold dance like fireflies in the night, and just above them a sheet of gold spreads across the sky like an unbroken placid bosom of water. This melts away into the flame and fire of the upper sky. While over all hang somesnow white clouds, pink at the lower edges and silver lined above. Slowly this vivid picture fades into yel low crimson and green. Looking over yonder what do we see 'tis the blushing response of the clouds on the farther side of the valley. Across this awful chasm souls clasp hands. The law of affinity draws the sleepy clouds, these countless miles away into the embrace of their lover, the sun, for his good night kiss, which is manifested in the crimson impress he leaves upon their snowy faces. The name of the park, indeed, would seem to justify that belief, yet noth ing could 'be further from the truth. The Yosemite Valley, though by far the grandest feature of the region, occupies only a small part of the tract. The famous valley measures but a scant 7 miles in length; the park, on the other hand, comprises no less than square miles, an area slightly larger than the State of Rhode Island, or about one-fourth as large as Connecticut. Within this area lie scores of lofty peaks and noble mountains, as well as many beautiful valleys and profound canyons; among others, the Hetch Hetchy Valley and the Tuolumne Canyon, each scarcely less wonderful than the Yosemite Valley itself. Here also are foaming rivers and cool, swift trout brooks; countless emerald lakes that reflect the granite peaks about them; and vast stretches of stately forest, in which many of the famous giant trees of California still survive. The Yosemite National Park lies near the crest of the great alpine range of California, the Sierra Nevada. To the initiated this fact in itself means a great deal, for the Sierra Nevada is a land not only of scenic wonders, but of marvelous climate - a climate paralleled by that of few mountain regions elsewhere in the world. It has a climate of sunshine and serene skies; dry, but not too dry; in summer warm but not uncomfortably warm; withal characterized by nights that are cool, even frosty at the higher levels. The winters are cold enough to insure a snowfall of 2 to 4 feet in the lowest valleys and to maintain perpetual ice fields and glaciers on the highest crests. One goes to the Yosemite region not merely to admire its cliffs and waterfalls, nor to walk through the aisles of its great forests, but to revel in the full enjoyment of these wonders in the pure, invigorating air and the restful calm that reigns from day to day.
