Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yorkshire Dales and Fells Painted Described This book is a companion volume to that entitled 'Yorkshire Coast and Moorland Scenes, ' which was published in 1904. It describes a tract of country that is more 11 of noble and imposing scenery than the northeastern comer of the county, although it has none of the advantages of a coast-line. Beyond this, the area covered by the present volume is larger than that of the earlier one, and the historic events connected with its great over-lords and their castles, with the numerous monasteries and ancient towns, are so full of thrilling interest that it has only been possible to sample here and there the vast stores of romance that exist in some hundreds of volumes of early and modem writings. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Sketches Relating to Yorkshire There is only a transient, hectic flush in the enjoyment of unrighteous pleasure; for this soon kills the true life of man. You may think, reader, as many others have imagined, that much of the penalty which men in voluntarily pay for the indulgence of unlicensed desire is the result of conventional theory or education, mov ing the soul, as it were, out of a perfect animal condi tion. Truly, if we may credit the old Saxon chronicles, those early barons did live like tangible wolves or other natural brute beasts; but that all this tended to indi vidual well-being or to national prosperity, we must emphatically deny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Yorkshire: Second Series There is an apology due to the subscribers for the delay which has clogged the passage of the book through the press. That delay arose, in a limited sense, by the Change from the old lines, and the transfer of the venture to other hands. But it was further increased and maintained beyond all proportion, and until out of control, by the political crisis which consumed the closing months of the present year. AS a contribution to the history of his time, the Editor records his belief that such a crisis will not readily recur being, however, forewarned, he will now take care that, in the event Of its recurrence, it shall not produce a similar effect upon the appearance of any subsequent volume of this Series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yorkshire Vales and Wolds IN two previous books, entitled Yorkshire Coast and Moorland Scenes and Yorkshire Dales and Fells, ' I have described-the northern half Of the great county, and in this third volume I have in a similar manner dealt with the southern parts. The three books, therefore, complete a description Of What has appealed to me as most notable in York shire, Ou account Of picturesqueness or association with historic events and great personages. Owing to the enormous area Of the county and the treasures it contains, the task Of selection has not been easy, and the work Of exploring, note-taking, painting, and writing, has spread over some four years. I have endeavoured to quote only from the most reliable and authentic sources, and in doing so have avoided some errors which have reappeared several times in writings of the last twenty years. Should any inaccuracies be discovered, however, I shall be grateful to anyone who will point them out. TO. Book Shoddy a Yorkshire Tale of Home Vol 1 of 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shoddy a Yorkshire Tale of Home, Vol. 1 of 3 Was only a keen man Of business, or even a sharp practitioner, with as much heart as the Often quoted paving-stone; and if, as we have the authority Of antiquity for believing, the bowels are the dwelling-place for the tender sentiments of sympathy and compassion, that in his case either the property was not tenantable, or the occupants had been removed by some writ Of ejectment. In both cases I draw this inference, that for a faithful portrait, or correct estimate of character, we should avoid painting our subject in black, and contemplating it only when so depicted, as a good many lights may be obscured by the heavy colour ing, which would otherwise give much life and point to various dimples and curves, and without which the picture is imperfect. Thus, if those keen Observers of human nature referred to could have seen the astute Old lawyer in his garden before breakfast, on a fine spring morning, and with hoe or rake in hand grubbing up the weeds, or re moving the stones, wearing a straw hat and an Old shooting-jacket, and sometimes in the evening with the addition of a long clay pipe, they would scarcely have believed him to be identical with the staid gentleman who, in his suit of black and white neckcloth, left his gate at precisely nine o'clock to catch the omnibus that should take him to town. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulleyns of Yorkshire But there are others remaining to whom my heartfelt thanks can be offered, who have aided me with unstinted kindness and I hope it is not invidious to name the Rev. Thos. Parkinson, recently Vicar of Northallerton Dr. Francis Collins, now of Lyme Regis the Rev. Leighton Pullan of Oxford Mr. Henry Pulleine of Drax Hall, and Mr. Henry Bramley of Harrogate. I could easily add to these names as memory brings before me many in York shire whom I must always think of as friends, although in some cases we have never met in the flesh. But spirits can meet, just as hands can cross the sea - and we have met in a very real sense. To one and all, then, again I offer my most appreciative thanks. Book The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coats of Arms of the Nobility and Gentry of Yorkshire, Vol. 1 More than twenty-five years ago, Mr. Joseph Dodgson, of Leeds, issued a circular notifying his intention to publish a small folio volume with the title, "Heraldry of Yorkshire," to be issued to subscribers at 31s. 6d., and to non-subscribers at two guineas. He stated that the book had long been wanted and would be found invaluable. He further stated - "I have in my possession the wood blocks of the Arms of the Families in the list herewith given. Should your name not be included in this list, and you feel desirous that your Arms should appear in the work, I shall be glad to get them drawn and engraved by the first heraldic artists of the day. The average price of a single Coat will be 21s.; if with quarterings, about two guineas. The cost will fall upon you, and the wood block will become your own property." Mr. Dodgson's project evidently failed, and the blocks passed through a London dealer to me by purchase. In 1874 Mr. Joseph Foster issued three large quarto volumes at eight guineas (with a score copies on extra large imperial paper, and the folding pedigrees mounted on linen, at sixteen guineas), under the title, "Pedigrees of the County Families of Yorkshire," with heraldic illustrations to each family.
