Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These essays are the work of a genial, literate mind exploring a wide range of issues mainly centered on the philosophy of science and epistemology, but including considerations of literature, language, and social practice. Caws's work, in general, represents an independent and alternative current in the philosophy of science, one which is informed by a broader conception of scientific thought and activity than are the usual approaches of either the traditional logical-empiricists or the more recent post-positivists. And he has a knack for deflating the latest fashionable claims early in the game, even before fashion has set in."--Marx Wartofsky, Editor, "The Philosophical Forum"

Book Real and Imaginary Travels

Download or read book Real and Imaginary Travels written by Anne Bandry-Scubbi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Whether real or imaginary, travel stands as a paradigm for the circulation and the production of beliefs and ideas, and can have as much to do with education or spirituality as with utopian politics or the development of trade. Ten European researchers focus in English and in French on real or fictional, experienced or narrated journeys, from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, a period that witnessed the intellectual construction of modern Europe, and the rise to prominence of England and the United Kingdom"

Book Shakespearean Gothic

Download or read book Shakespearean Gothic written by Christy Desmet and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the paradox that the Gothic (today's werewolves, vampires, and horror movies) owe their origins (and their legitimacy) to eighteenth-century interpretations of Shakespeare. As Shakespeare was being established as the supreme British writer throughout the century, he was cited as justification for early Gothic writers' fascination with the supernatural, their abandoning of literary "decorum," and their fascination with otherness and extremes of every kind. This book addresses the gap for an up to date analysis of Shakespeare's relation to the Gothic. An authority on the Gothic, E.J. Clery, has stated that "It would be impossible to overestimate the importance of Shakespeare as touchstone and inspiration for the terror mode, even if we feel the offspring are unworthy of their parent. Scratch the surface of any Gothic fiction and the debt to Shakespeare will be there." This book therefore addresses Shakespeare's importance to the Gothic tradition as a whole and also to particular, well-known and often studied Gothic works. It also considers the influence of the Gothic on Shakespeare, both in-print and on stage in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain. The introductory chapter places the chapters within the historical development of both Shakespearean reception and Gothic Studies. The book is divided into three parts: 1) Gothic Appropriations of "Shakespeare"; 2) Rewriting Shakespearean Plays and Characters; 3) Shakespeare Before/After the Gothic.

Book A Colonial Woman s Bookshelf

Download or read book A Colonial Woman s Bookshelf written by Kevin J. Hayes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Colonial Woman’s Bookshelf represents a significant contribution to the study of the intellectual life of women in British North America. Kevin J. Hayes studies the books these women read and the reasons why they read them. As Hayes notes, recent studies on the literary tastes of early American women have concentrated on the post-revolutionary period, when several women novelists emerged. Yet, he observes, women were reading long before they began writing and publishing novels, and, in fact, mounting evidence now suggests that literacy rates among colonial women were much higher than previously supposed. To reconstruct what might have filled a typical colonial woman’s bookshelf, Hayes has mined such sources as wills and estate inventories, surviving volumes inscribed by women, public and private library catalogs, sales ledgers, borrowing records from subscription libraries, and contemporary biographical sketches of notable colonial women. Hayes identifies several categories of reading material. These range from devotional works and conduct books to midwifery guides and cookery books, from novels and travel books to science books. In his concluding chapter, he describes the tensions that were developing near the end of the colonial period between the emerging cult of domesticity and the appetite for learning many women displayed. With its meticulous research and rich detail, A Colonial Woman’s Bookshelf makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of the complexities of life in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century America.

Book Liberal Democracy and Liberal Education

Download or read book Liberal Democracy and Liberal Education written by Daniel E. Cullen and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book reflect on the paradoxical relationship of liberal education and liberal democracy. Liberal education emphasizes knowledge for its own sake, detached from all instrumental purposes. It also aims at liberation from the manifold sources of unfreedom, including political sources. In this sense, liberal education is negative, questioning any and all constraints on the activity of mind. Liberal democracy, devoted to securing individual natural rights, purports to be the regime of liberty par excellence. Since both liberal education and liberal democracy aim to set individuals free, they would seem to be harmonious and mutually reinforcing. But there are reasons to doubt that liberal education can be the civic education liberal democracy needs. If liberal education is in tension with all instrumental purposes, how does it stand toward the goal of preparing the kind of citizens liberal democracy needs? The book’s contributors are critical of the way higher education typically interprets its responsibility for educating citizens, and they link those failures to academia’s neglect of certain founding principles of the American political tradition and of the traditional liberal arts ideal.

Book Labyrinth of Digressions

Download or read book Labyrinth of Digressions written by René Bosch and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With their appearance during the 1760s, the five instalments of Laurence Sterne's The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman caused something like a booksellers' hype. Small publishers and anonymous imitators seized on Sterne's success by bringing out great numbers of spurious new volumes, critical or ironic pamphlets, and works that in style and title express a congeniality with Tristram Shandy. This study explores these eighteenth-century imitations as indicators of contemporary assumptions about Sterne's intentions. Comparisons between the original, the first reactions, and a number of late eighteenth-century imitations, show that Tristram Shandy was initially read against the background of Augustan and Grub-street satire. The earliest imitators harked back to traditions of banter and folklore, bawdy and grotesque humour, pathetic stories and orthodox religiosity, reaffirming a pattern of moral and aesthetic values that was conservative for its time. Philosophical Sentimentalism appears to have been a late development. It is also argued that, partly because of their bad reputation, some of the authors of forgeries and parodies had a greater influence on the original than the reviewers to whom Sterne is often said to have listened. The imitators followed leads and themes in the first instalments, developing them according to their own conception of Sterne's project and the reasons for his success. As a consequence, they unintentially put a pressure on Sterne to alter his course, and even to abandon some of the narrative lines and themes he had set out for himself. The literature section contains a chronological checklist of English eighteenth-century Sterneana.
